Your dude 'is_barren', that'd be the cause (so yes, feature to answer your question more directly). It's intentionally not a thing the whole world, even yourself, just happens to know. Although I think the AI will annoyingly point it out to you regardless with marriages refusals etc.

I'll give you a nod for actually enabling char_info, as that made it easy to figure out.

Alright. So does the game dole is_barren flags by random chance, or can a bug cause a character to get this flag?

I feel like I'm getting trollfaced by the game as my close relatives just got wiped out by the plague, and if my current ruler dies heirless, the title goes to some twerp who my ruler shares a great-grandfather with.

There's a couple causes. Serious illness for example can cause temporary, or even permanent, infertility, one can be born with it, the mother might become barren after a bad birth, etc.

Judging by your scenario it might actually be the former case of sickness, assuming you too caught it but survived, and just terrible luck. You'd have to check the save for the character_modifier "infertile" or "barren" to be sure of that much.

Due to a succession crisis this ruler actually lost the primary title to his elder sister. At this point the capital was carpeted by the plague but I had quarantined the castle in advance. As the sister remained in the capital as an empress, the future ruler was moved outside the plague zone to rule an emirate. Later said empress turned lunatic and died in battle, returning the emperor title to this ruler. I don't recall this character ever having a sickness, but I did get a "THE PLAGUE IS COMING FOR ME!" notification, as the plague moved a province closer to my emirate before fizzling out. By the time I got the emperor title back, there was no plague in any of my demesne provinces.

It's just infuriating that after 4-5 generations of rulers who had more kids than they'd ever need, this one time the current lineage hangs by the thread of a single living character, he gets smacked by the infertility fairy. :/

Oh well, if this was caused by the plague, gotta remember to distribute all the potential heirs to the most distant corners of the realm the next time a plague hits.

Just get a lusty wife, do your best to ensure she has plenty of oppertunities for affairs (invite lusty men to court, avoid having a high opinion of her), and then just refuse to believe that any kids she makes are not yours.
It's not an ethical method of line continuation, but needs must.

I'd rather just let that distant cousin take over than get cucked voluntarily. I think I did read of a similar solution than what you mentioned on CK2 wiki for a playthrough where you start as a heirless, castrated emir.

An emergency conversion to Cathar or Bogomilist can work just as well. They have the ability to outright adopt kids to be their heirs!

I... guess I'm just obsessed with the eugenics aspect of the game, and find any solution that doesn't involve actual genetic continuation unsatisfactory. :B
