I'd like to see it heavy on diplomacy and economics, plus dealing with things like terrorists and rebellions. But wars do happen, look at Ukraine. Maybe not world wars, but there's still conflicts.
Yes, a modern game would probably be focused on politics, multilateral diplomacy and economics (specifically the transition from heavy industry to service economy), espionage, proxy wars and funding of paramilitaries and rebel groups. The framework of the UN and the global system, coupled with MAD would deter any war between major powers. Done right it could be quite fun. But IIRC PDS has already stated their reluctance to do a modern day game for a whole bunch of reasons, least of all that any controversial conflicts and persons are still very fresh in people's memories, and the legal difficulties with depicting currently living men and women.

Yeah, that's a good point. Maybe move the idea into the near-future. Far enough ahead of us that the people and conflicts can be new, but still familiar. But anyway, it's a distant dream, probably not too likely to happen, but I can hope!

The question is, what one can achieve with this? It's
"Now, here, you see, it takes all the running you can do, to keep in the same place. If you want to get somewhere else, you must run at least twice as fast as that!"
sort of thing. I can't recall any country changing it's power level significantly enough for the last 20 years. Well, except petrocracies, they rise and fall with oil.

China maybe? Russia has started to reassert itself on the global stage after the collapse of the Soviet Union. I guess it depends on how you define "significantly". Allowances of some kind would of course have to be made for gameplay. I mean, you can bring the Byzantines from the brink of collapse to Great Power status within 50 years of play in EUIV, mass industrialize Russia within 20 years in Vic2 and conquer everything as Romania in HoI. ;)

Presumably Vicky 3 since IIRC that's the series that's out of date.

Rome is even more out of date. Rome came out in 2008, while Vicky2 came out in 2010. If we count the fact that Rome's expansion Vae Victius came out also in 2008 while Hearts of Darkness for vicky2 came out in 2013. That indicates more that rome needs an update.

Something no one has mentioned yet is who at PDS that potentially could be working with it. I believe @Groogy , @Wiz and @King all will be working on an unannounced project.

I dearly hope it will be Vicky 3, though I sympathize with those clamoring for Rome 2.

There are, seemingly, 2 games in work, yes? Why not both Vic and Rome? Cant we actaully pray for the best? Come on, you pessimistic naysayers!

Sympathy is for the weak. Victoria 3 or war.

If I were to guess, I'd have to say that Rome II or another new IP is on the conveyor belt before Vicky 3. Don't quote me on this, but I believe that while Paradox was dropping hints about 'Project Augustus' (Stellaris), they said that Vicky 3 wasn't in development yet. Given how long these games take to develop, I don't think Vicky 3 will be in a state to properly announce for at least another year.

I'd like a game in the Post-HoI. Modern global politics.
Well, they did say that modern times wouldn't happen. However, there is one Post-HoI timeperiod that is extremely interesting; the Cold War.

TBH I hope it's going to be Victoria 3.

Can't really agree with that part. One side lost not because it made some strategical/tactical mistakes but rather due flaws in it's core. So it would be fighting/waiting for inevitable to happen.
