The Caliphate. 1804-1864
The hausa man Califa Muhammad dan Fodio met his council in the real Palace of the Capital. The hausa tribes controlled a long territory in the valley of Niger river. His face was a mixture of nervousness and worry.
His brothers sat down at right and left. In front of him, the ulema Denianke, an old man, saluted him.
The Califa went to him and, with his hand, caught the chair and waited that the man sat down. The man came to his chair. He spoke:
-brothers, Great ulema, ministers, ...- he stopped his speech -. I have heard that the christian Britishes have colonized the coast of the tivs in the south.
The people looked at each other and started to talk worried.
-we must be strong to continue independent.
-the other tribes don't want nothing with us -said Tukur, one of the brothers.
-our country Is large and Great. We have the strongest army in the zone. If they don't want to submit, we would force them -said Tidiani dan Fodio, Chief of Army.
-but they are our religión brothers -spoke Ulema Denianke -. The spear would not kill brothers.
-ulema - said Tidiani -. We don't want to kill anybody. The chiefts have to submit to our power. We will respect the life of the people of kanuri, the tivs, the Sara and others.
All looked at each others. Finally, the Califa spoke.
-God Is one for all. If the chiefts of other tribes don't want to submit, we will conquer their lands. We have to new our army. These Will be the first steps. Then we have to make guns and cannons. Our artisans are capable of that.
In one year, the hausa expanded from his territory to the west and east, and to the south and conquered the sea state of Benín. This was a good idea. That was the step to start a commerce with the modern economies of the north in a short future.
The modernization of the country was, however, faster than the Califa, his brothers and the ulema thought. In 1858, an alliance between intellectuals and ulemas finished with slavery after that a civil war with the noblemen. United Kingdom had done a defensive pact with the chieft of liberals, the Commander Nana dan Fodio, that was the head of the Agrarian reform of twenty years ago. The war was short and the cause was the injerence of United Kingdom. The slavery finished and with the council without the powers of noblemen in four years the vote for propietaries and the parlamentary republic were accepted.
The reactionaries ulemas and noblemen reached in Spain a power against the reforms, but UK was stronger and south Spain was conquered by a combinated force of British and sokoto. The Caliphate ended. The republic was born.
The ulema Denianke would turn in his grave if he saw how the enemies were now allies, and all they wanted was changed. These were other times.
