I am playing Sweden and would like to demilitarize my country while having a very small volunteer standing army.

I have random soldier pops all over my country and I don't have enough manpower to disband them.

If I increase military spending will it increase the number of soldier pops at the same rate it increases my manpower (meaning I still won't be able to demote all of the soldiers to labourers)?

Does this mean I can never fully remove all the soldier pops?

I really need guys to work in my factories and the soldiers do absolutely nothing

Thanks.

EDIT: Also, I'm playing VIP

Increasing millitary spending won't increase the number of soldier pops. Soldier pops need to be manually promoted or demoted. If you put youre millitary slider to full, wile having now devissions, then the manpower will grow to a maximum value that is equal to that of all soldier pops in the country, so then you will also be able to demote every single one of them.

Ok I think I understand, so how are soldier pops created in the first place then? There have certainly been instances when I don't upgrade any at all and my maximum MP + number of soldier pops increases.

Also when I go to demote soldier pops I sometimes have zero or negative manpower even with max spending, etc (sorta like my maximum MP is negative).

They grow like all other POPs. And you may have soldiers immigrate to your country.

To create a soldier pop, take a soldier pop and promote it to soldier like you would do with a craftsman or other. As you know to convert them back (demobilizing) you need manpower.

Soldier pops can also be created by event, and they can be conquered too.

Take for ex. that you have one soldier pop of 40K, and 1 devission of 10.000 men. If you put youre millitary slider to full, manpower should increase until it reaches 30K, wich is 40K - the 10K used.

If i would have 4 devissions of 10K, then my manpower would stay at 0 if i pay my millitary slider full, but when i would put it to nothing then my manpower will drop to -40.

If i would have 5 devissions of 10K, then even at max funding i would end up with -10K manpower. This situation isn't uncoman, one easily gets a few free volunteer devissions trough a game, and afcourse something can happen to the millitary pop after the devissions are created, like they could emigrate or they could rebel and loose strenght, etc.

...

Don't forget though that if you have a ruling party with the Jingoism value, you cannot demobilize solider POPs.

Came as quite a surprise when I inadvertantly discovered that.

Ah, so that is the point of all this POP promoting and demoting eh?
