After experiencing my share of crashes that made the game allmost unplayable, i decided to see if i could do something to correct the problem. And once i did as descibed below i havent had a single crash. Even with numrous programs running in the background.

The key is to force the game to run in 640x480 resolution. I has no impact on the game, and it looks exactly as normal in the game when you do this.

* Right click on the Victoric icon on the desktop.
* Select properties and then Compability
* Select the "Run in 640x480 screen resolution."

does it still "flash" the screen every few minutes?

Except the game is not really running in that resolution, since DirectX will overide it.
There are no 640x480 graphics in victoria, so I fail to see how it could look the same.

I have no idea. Perhaps it is running in a higher resolution. But the fact remains that it fixed the problem. I running the game under WinXP and the latest DirectX. I had a crash to the desktop every 5-15 minutes into the game. And after the change i havent had a single crash on over 10-20 hours of gameplay.

And that whats counts isnt it?? :)

Btw, the only "flicker" i notice after the change happens when i receive a message in MSN or the mail program checks for new mails. As far as i can see the game itself doesnt flicker.

Yup the e-mail will give a flicker, that is one reason that shutting down background programs is suggested.

Interesting!

Maybe the setting effects the DX settings using the ones for the lower resolution even though it is producing the higher one.

That's what I meant by DirectX settings, since DX overrides refresh rates.

So, if you lower your refresh rates or change setting to 640x480 mode, this will help eliminate crashing? What about crashing in MP?

Your miliage may vary, there are lots of possible reasons for a crash.

Not that easy since setting XP in that mode does not produce the same results. ;)
It must alter the DX specs somehow since that is what will determine the refresh in game.
