I recently uploaded the newest version of my mod, and the only graphics changes from previous version are a few flags. Nonetheless some people are having CTDs (while vanilla works fine) when the game reaches the "loading graphics" point, while for others (including myself) it runs perfectly. Even after having taken out the GFX folder, the CTD still persists for some people, so I wondering what besides added GFX could be causing a graphics-related crash?
Note: everyone who has the crash appears to have WinXP, while I at least have Vista and it doesn't crash at all.
I try my best to support my own mod and not ask you guys, but this is just strange...i.e. GFX crashes when there are no added GFX...the other folders "extended" are common, events, history, and localisation. My first culprit would be localisation since .csvs can be so unstable at times, but I don't see why this would crash the game at "loading graphics"...I'm still looking for errors, but these same localisation files are unchanged from the previous version, which never had this problem.

I guess to sum up, what would make the game crash at this point, in Xp but not Vista, in a mod but not vanilla?

Any help here would be appreciated.
Regards,
Bc.

I really have no idea. Have they tried deleting the contents of the CACHE folder? It's often a good idea after applying a patch or a mod.

You mean the map\cache? There are no map alterations in the mod (its only common/events/gfx/history/localisation). Does it contain anything else?

Well I just got a setup.log & system.log from someone who is having these CTDs, and the really big difference I found was this:

Kernel Release[graphicssettings.cpp:305]: MaxTextureBlendStages: 8
Kernel Release[graphicssettings.cpp:306]: Support for Anisotropic filtering found.
Kernel Release[graphicssettings.cpp:309]: Max Anisotropic filtering: 16
Kernel Release[graphicssettings.cpp:310]: Anisotropic filtering set to: 0
Kernel Release[graphicssettings.cpp:314]: Vertex Shader version: 3.0
Kernel Release[graphicssettings.cpp:319]: Pixel Shader version: 3.0
Kernel Release[main.cpp:208]: Rome Version May 13 2008 : 08:54:08

>Right here, in my system.log, these lines:
Kernel Release[directorysettings.cpp:47]: Loading mod ROME-ENHANCED
Kernel Release[main.cpp:213]: Mod: ROME-ENHANCED
load the mod, but for this user, these lines don't appear, and it doesn't load - it goes for a few more lines and then crashes.

Kernel Release[internationalizedtext.cpp:1167]: Create table
Kernel Release[internationalizedtext.cpp:1169]: Create text database
Kernel Release[dxmusic.cpp:39]: Init Music
Kernel Release[dxmusic.cpp:45]: Graph done 0
Kernel Release[dxmusic.cpp:51]: Control done 0
Kernel Release[dxmusic.cpp:57]: Seeking done 0
Kernel Release[dxmusic.cpp:62]: Event done 0
Kernel Release[dxmusic.cpp:67]: Music done 0

Dont have time to check right now properly, but you only get that log output when you use the -mod commandline switch. either he isnt using that, or the mod failed to load somehow.

do your crash victims run vista? it does odd things sometimes with directories...

No they all seem to have XP.
Lol...now I've got one guy who says it works using the shortcut (-mod) but it crashes using the game launcher...while the guy who supplied the system.log above says it's working now.
This is really a confusing one.

welcome to bugtracking :)

Lol...well there's one career I won't be choosing.
Anyway it seems everyone who was having problems is ok now...in some cases merely after re-downloading the mod. Never had that sort of file-corruption occur on such a wide scale...but oh well such is life.
I'll let you know if the new version has similar problems.

Well now some people are getting CTDs again. It's an updated version, but it's only a few files added to the exact same archive.

It seems to crash right when the "graphics" part of the loading sequence is done. The game finishes the system.log portion normally (it gets to "loading graphics" in the startup sequence and then crashes).
Again, this has never once happened on my computer...so it's difficult (to say the least) to pin down.
Any ideas? What happens after "loading graphics"? The only graphics added are some flags and one trait icon, all of which work fine on my computer, so I think it's whatever happens immediately after that is causing the issue.
