Succession is Agnatic Gavelkind, but the first son (who is a count in the empire) doesn't get it. By the succession list, only his second son (Bastard, raised in Byz, matri-married) is qualified to inherit. Shouldn't that list be his myriad of kids?

*confused*

I get why I (a count) was able to marry the second kid to my sister matri, since he was a bastard he fell under the command of a count, who had no reason not to marry him off. However, I really don't get what is happening with the succession here.

Edit: Also, if anyone knows what will happen in the empire when good ol karl finally dies? Does my brother-in-law keep following the greek rites or does he switch over?

We can't control the effects of succession laws, so that is gavelkind...being gavelkind, I'm afraid.

As for the Greek Rites trait: once someone has it, they don't switch.
