I've had the game for about a week now, but I still don't understand how CB works-seems like I always lose it when I attack other countries-but why is it i never have Cbs agains t other countries-a basic overview or explanation would be greatly appreciated :)

You having CB on a country at the beginning of the game often is because they are occupying a "CB province". If you look at the political map, certain provinces will have your shield on them. So long as another power owns one of those provinces, you have CB on them.

Other ways you can get a CB is if they have a trade embargo in place against you, if an ally dishonors your declaration of war (this is temporary), if you're playing Spain (CB on all Moslem countries), and through a random event (I've only gotten that one once).

Not only playing as spain gives CB's. Austria has an CB against Bohemia and Russia againt Kazan, Golden horde, Sibir, Sweden, Poland..., Tuetonic order, etc.

You can loose a CB that comes from a trade embargo. If you declare war against that country and make then peace, the CB and trade embargo are gone.

A way to get a trade embargo against you is to compete in their CoT. The longer you will do this, the more change you get a trade embargo against you.

If you really want to wage war agianst specific nations, ally yourself with their enemy's. I play with Russia and currently have an alliance with England, Denmark, Hansatic leage(whatever) and one or two more. They declare war against Sweden all the time and i'm capturing Swedens provinces. :)

True, but Austria has CB shields in Bohemia (Hungary too, in the IGC). I haven't played Russia yet, so I don't know about that, I suppose I'll get around to trying it.

Edited to add: I guess all CB are temporary, really, except for Spain's and maybe Russia's, given that one can usually take CB provinces pretty easily as they usually border the starting possessions.

CB is a tricky thing

I'm in the middle of my third GC and here some CB items I've noticed.

1) You get CB against a country occupying a "national" province. Ex. England's CB versus Scotland, Austria CB vs. Bohemia. This can even lead to "entangling" CB. Turkey takes Illyria from Venice. (Venice now has CB versus Turkey) Austria then takes Illyria from Turkey. Venice now has CB on Austria.

2) Religon CB, Counter Refomed Catholic has CB on all Prot. and Ref. countries.

3) Trade embargoes give CB for the duration of the trade embargo.

4) Dishonoring Military Alliances and leaving Mil All. give 6 month CB

There may be some other ones I'm forgeting, but the above seem to be the major ones.

Banning a member of your alliance (which you must have a CB to do) also gives that nation a CB against you ...

Extra to religion: All Sunni nations have a CB against all Shia nations and vice versa. Since there are only two Shia nations - Persia and the Mamelukes - it isn't so obvious that this is due to religion.

The underlying principle is, you have legitimate cause for war if:

a> That nation owns some land which is "historically" yours .. in YOUR opinion, not in theirs. Having a CB is relevant to how badly your population will think of you for being a warmonger.

b> A nation has taken some unpleasant action concerning you (blocked trade, dishonoured an alliance, etc.)

You can also gain a 12-month CB through the "insulted by foreign diplomat" random event. It's invariably against some country that you couldn't possibly attack even if you wanted to :D

Other way of getting a CB

When you loan money and that country doesn't pay back you get a CB on that country. It's temporal but strategically might be a very cheap way of DoWing someone without any stability penalty

Spain and Portugal also have a CB against anyone owning a province in their "zone of influence" in the Americas (you can see this in the colonization screen). Maybe Africa and India, too, but I'm not sure, I haven't checked.
