I was just playing a game in 1066 as Guilliame of Aquitaine. The law was set to semi-sallic primogeniture and I had an adult son who was in my court, as my marshall. Guilliame died, and, at the time of his death, was Duke of Potiou and Count of Potiou, but, instead of his son inheriting the titles, on the map, the shield went blank, and I was unable to get into the province management or court screens. His son was still listed as Duke and Count on the son's biographical page, however.

Are you sure his son was first in line of succession ?

Cat

Yes. He was the oldest son, and the next in line on the Character screen, and after his father died, his picture replaced the father's picture on the main screen. Unfortunately, I don't have a saved game illustrating this.

Was it the son or the grand-son BTW ?

Cat

If he had daughters by his first wife, and any of those daughters had sons, under semi-salic primogeniture, those grandsons would inherit. If, as likely, those grandsons had a different family name, then when they inherit, it's game over, unless Guilliame had a uncle or brother or some other same-last-name male relative with a different title, in which case you may end up playing on as the Count of Out-in-the-Middle-of-Nowhereia.

Except, even under semi-salic inheritance, your daughter's sons only inherit if you have no sons, correct? Besides, that's not what happened here. It wasn't game over. Time still passed. I just had no control over anything, and the ducal Coat of Arms on the map was blank. This hasn't happened to me since, and I'm just chalking it up to a random bug.

Do you have a save of this situation ?

(i.e. when you reload you cannot do anything ?)
