Hi,

I seem to be having a problem with my sound in games. Here's the specs:

Athlon 900
SB Audigy Gamer
GeForce 2 MX 100/200
256 RAM
Windows 98 SE

I will be playing any game and, when it seems to engage the 3D, the sound will cut off and produce a loud, high-pitched buzz. When I have the option in some games to cut off the 3D accelerator or have it software driven or whatever, I still get the buzz. Before a recent reformat the comp would freeze moments after the sound cut off, but now at least I have the opportunity to exit the program. This has happened playing NHL 2001, EU2, FIFA 2002, Freespace, and now Legion. The only game it doesn't seem to effect is IWar2.

I recenty upgraded from an SB Live Value to the Audigy, thinking (after much experimentation) that it was the sound card to blame. Now I'm beginning to think the problem lies in the video card. But, before I go out and buy a new one only to run the risk of this reoccuring, is there any way to fix it? Does the conflict lie somewhere else in my system?

Thanks.

if you know what is your motherboard brand and model # I would suggest to update your BIOS. I had a freezing problem as such and that was the only solution.

audigy is what I have and it is working fine, so maybe it is the sound card who is defective :(

did you try to go in your sound options (control panel) and lower the hardware accelaration? sometimes it can help.

Since SB Live Value gave the prior to my switch to the Audigy and since the problems with Audigy are not as severe as what I experienced with the Live, I think (and hoping) :( the problem doesn't lie in the sound card.

I have had sound acceleration to none and video to none unless I'm playing a game that requires at least basic 3D. Even tinkering with general hardware acceleration doesn't seem to have an efeDespite this, I still get the cut-off and high-pitched tone. This is what's confusing me and I hope there is a low cost solution, though I'm starting to think there isn't

This will let you remove your Nvidia drivers:

try this and reinstall the latest version.

This will do the same with DirectX; use it and reinstall DX 8.0a.

I don't think this will help you since you said you recently reformatted your driver; however, we have nothing to lose.

Upgrading your BIOS and your mb drivers is definately something I would try before changing video card though.
