First, double check whether you might be running an out-of-date driver for this card. Next...double check whether you're running the current version of DirectX (8.1).

If you update both and are still having trouble then please post back here with complete system details as per the "Read First" sitckie at the top of this forum.

The most common culprits are either an issue with the driver compatibility with DirectX or with some lingering "aftereffects" of the binkplay opening clips. If all else is normal then the next step is to disable binkplay by renaming the \avi folder to \avi_old and then running. This will often completely solve the issue. If not, leave the folder as is (i.e. leave it as \avi_old) and try reducing or turning off your hardware acceleration.

A couple people have also reported that simply doing a thorough uninstall (make sure you follow the instructions for this to ensure that all vestiges of it have been removed, including temp folders and registry key) and then reinstalling and patching. There might be some issues for people who have installed, then updated to 1.01 and then later updated to 1.02 that this will fix.

After that, we definitely need complete system details to trace it down further.

Incidentally, please let us know which (if any) of the above succeed and also give us a quick overview of your system anyway because it will help us to give feedback to Paradox to try to reduce these issues in future patches and games. :)

That's good news. Can you give us a quick overview of what system you have? In particular, what OS, what DirectX, what sound card and what video card?

Specifics...

Greetings again,

My system specifics that you asked for are win98, Dx8.1 (installed from HoI as a matter of fact), a Sound Blaster 16 PCI, and an aOpen PA3000 32mb video card. I have a PII 400, on a aOpen board and 512mb memory.

Uncertain exactly what I did to cause the semi-fix. The following is what I tried (The first three were done more to prevent it from crashing then anything else):

1. removed some memory to make it a standard number. (Had something like 576mb).
2. Changed my cache to 1000 min 2000 mb.
3. I checked my board's Bios and found that some of the settings were off. Changed the settings from 350 to 400 so it was at the proper processor speed, and changed something relating to the video card from 64mb to 32mb.
4. Changed the AVI folder name.

I played it last night with the music on again just to test it. It seems that no matter what I do, if I have the music on, it crashes after an hour roughly no matter what. That's what led me to belive it was a cache problem. I seem to recall having a similiar problem with WWIIOnline.

Now, for my semi-regular sound problem. It seems that some of the sounds play consistently, but others are still one shot deals, I think. I need to know when I SHOULD be hearing things I guess. Often, when I click on an icon/button/whatever for the first time I'll hear an accompanied sound. But that's the last time I'll hear it. On the other hand, I always hear the battle sounds no matter how many battles I've had, and the same holds true for the movement sounds. So, the question now is should I be hearing sounds for when I click on units/buttons/etc.?

Now you are saying your music does not work either?
What publisher version do you have Eg Strategy First, Pan Vision?

Correction to details...

Publisher version? How do I figure that out?

What I thought I heard and what I heard were two diffrent things :) First, the music DOES work, but with it on it crashes to desktop after an hour or so. This may or may not have been a problem stemming from the AVI player...I dont know. I turned it off and moved the AVI folder and it seems to be fine for the most part...with only infrequent CTD's. It still does crash after a long while, i.e. three hour game session or so. I have it set to save monthly so it doesn't bother me. I think the CTD problem is a cache problem because I remember running into it previously with a diffrent game. Once I solve the sound problem with your help I will see if I can scare up the info on the cache problem of the other game and see if it's the same thing. I think Cache Man solved the CTD before...will try it again soon.

The sound only works once, all except sounds accompanying when I click to see the status of a battle. The other sounds WILL repeat if I activate them again before they finish. Example: Click a fleet, move it to another water zone you get the fleet move sound. If I click another water zone before this sound completes it will repeat it from the begining. Once a sound completes though, it never activates or repeats again.

With all the quick movement of units at the start of a game I thought it was working and then I was too into the game to notice they had stopped. :D

Thanks for the help so far!, hope we can fix it soon,
Josh

''Sound Effects Play Once then stop
Whenever I play, each sound effect (the ones you get when you click on or move a unit) will play once, then will not play for the rest of the time. I have a SB Audigy Gamer on an ASUS A7V333 board. Any suggestions to rectify this problem?''

Me too, i have same config and as the game advance ,, my sound (including music and effects) start vanishing until i have no more sound. I have a Asus Gforce 4ti-4200 and Yes, i have all latest drivers.

whats odd. I just recently upgraded my old SB live 5.1 to a brand new SB Audigy. Before that i had no problem with sound....

Last minute update..... I just download the latest drivers for audigy ..

Sound Blaster Audigy DriverPack
AUD-WEBUP-W2-LB

I will test and come back soon. I sure it wont do a difference.. because the only new thing in those drivers set is the WHQL certification i believe.

Josh

Publishers logo and name is on the box and the disk and the manual and (the splash screen before you disabled the AVI).

Publisher...

On the bottom of the box it says '2002 Strategy First Inc. All rights reserved. Hearts of Iron is a trademark of Paradox Entertainment AB. All rights reserved. All other trademarks and copyrights are the properties of their respective owners.

Front and top of the box contains two logos, Pradox and Strategy First. Sides contain only Strategy First. Back contains both, with the addition of Infogames and Bink Video.

I assume the publisher is Strategy First?

MrT and/or JDP!!!

I cut this from the link MrT posted previously:

"I think I have figured it out

I have switched from the Audigy VxD drivers to the Audigy WDM drivers, and now the sounds are back!"

I'm running a PCI 16 not an Audigy, so can someone explain to me what the heck the VxD vs. WDM drivers are exactly so I know what I'm looking for?

Josh

Cool, but....

Thats cool, but now where the Hell do I find those drivers for a Sound Blaster 16 PCI??? Couldn't find anything on the creative labs website for win98. Is it something thats only available for win2k? And whats the complaint with XP about having to call them every time you want to change something to activate it in the thread with JDP??? Guess the question is do I need to upgrade my operating system or am I just looking in the wrong place for drivers for 98?

Thanks everyone for the help so far!

I found the solution!

In thinking back to other games and trying to think of a solution as to why the heck HoI was doing this and how come it didn't happen to any of my other games, I remembered a somewhat similiar problem for Aliens vs. Predator (a fine game I might add). The problem with that game is it didn't have sound at all except the music. If you searched their FAQ, the solution was that the DirectX sound acceleration was causing the problem. Solution was to move the slide bar to no acceleration. Guess what...after moving it to none all the sounds now repeat for HoI as well!

As this seems to be an ongoing problem for some users and I'm wagering this is probably the needed solution for those that can't get it to work no matter what they do, would you like me to write up an easy to follow walk through that can be sticky'ed in FAQ? After this solution dawned on me, I tried a search for 'sound accel*' and found all sorts of people figuring out the same answer especially on the EUII boards. I never found this solution until I searched for accel*...had it been sticky in the FAQ, it wouldn't have taken a week or two to figure her out :) Just a suggestion!

Hardware accel...

Was looking through the responses at the begining of this thread and saw MrT actually said to reduce the hardware acceleration. When I first read this a week ago, for some reason I thought he meant the video acceleration...I had completely forgot about the sound accel slider...sorry for all the hassle to get the simple solution!

Thanks all,
Josh

Atleast it is working now, that is the important thing, thanks for letting us know.
