2 days ago I loaded up my HOI2, and from the opening credits, instead of the normal sound, I got a constant "beep". Once the game started, any events that popped up created a beeping sound (such as diplomacy offers). When I adjusted the sliders in the production screen, I got an irritating beep. Prior to this, I had full sound functionality. Last night, when I started up the game, during the Paradox intro, I initially got the "surf sound" but then it changed to a continuous, annoying "beep". Then, during the game itself, the beep was continuous. I had to turn my speakers off. It simply did not stop. My sound card drivers are up to date (SBLive! Platinum), and I have made no changes to my system. In fact, before I installed the game, I had just done a complete reformat of my HD. I have no problem with sound in any other applications, and, like I said, the sound initially worked perfectly when I first started playing the game. The only thing I can think of is I've started 3 grand campaigns now, and have some of the old saved games still on record. Could that be corrupting things? Please tell me what to do. I'd hate to have to reinstall and lose my saved campaign (I'm finally getting the hang of things!!!)
Thanks for any help.
Scott

Since you just did a complete reformat of your HD is it possible you have been installing other things on your system since the last time it was working?

Sound

Actually, HOI2 was the last thing I loaded on after I had reinstalled everything else. The only thing that has been updated are my spyware programs, my antivirus definitions, and some security updates from Microsoft. The WinXP downloads were pretty large. Would it help to know what all I downloaded from them?
Thanks for your time.

By installing other things I was talking about driver upates like the WinXP updates you mention. ;)

Also you do not need to lose your save if you reinstall, just copy the save to another directory not in the CK directory, then uninstall, reinstall and copy the save back into the save game directory.

Okay let's try some standard things.
1) Rename the AVI folder to AVI_back
2) Set the color depth to 16BIT
3) Turn off everything in the background like E-mail/ICQ/Messenger, Virus protection and everything in the system tray beside the clock.
4) Update your Windows, update your Video card drivers and audio card drivers. Then repeat steps 1-3.

Please run a DirectX Diagnostic:
Start menu –Run - then type Dxdiag, then select each tab across the top of the window, and run the tests on each tab. Then select “Save All Information” button in the lower right of the window. This will bring up a dialog box to allow you to select a name for the file where the information will be saved. You can save it right on the desktop as this will make it easy to find. Then copy the contents of that file from the start to the heading that says “DirectX components” then paste what you have copied into a post in this thread.

Reinstall

I took your first bit of advice and just reinstalled the game. Everything works fine now. Must have been that damn Microsoft stuff again.
Thank you very much for your time and help. I am so enjoying this game.

My sound problem came back

I thought I made this problem go away, but it hasn't. At first, it was intermittent, now it is all the time. I uninstalled and reinstalled the game, and it went away for a while, then came back. I start to play a game, and anytime a message appears, or I click on an icon, a continuous beep comes out of my speakers. I checked with Creative (I have a SB Live! soundcard) to update my drivers, and their website told me I had the most up to date drivers. Tell me what files you need me to upload, and how to do it, and I'll give it to you.
Thanks for your help,
Scott
I just reread your original advice. I'll do the steps you suggested, and report back to you. Thanks.
