Hi all

I am working on a 1219AD scenario, that I am building from scratch and I am having a little trouble finding source images (so that I can request people to make nice shiny flags and shields, as I cannot do it myself).

I have trawled sites and salvaged many shields (not many flags true but I can cope with that), that I can use or abuse. I have some source items already but I need help finding some more.

I dont expect people to go out and find them:D :p But if any-one already knows where some of these following images can be found I would appreciate it.

THX
P.S. (any-where from 1200 to 1400 AD)

Lombard League - (I have a representation, thx Kaigon)
Seljuk Turks * - (I now have thx MKJ)
Beni Ghaniya Emirate (around Tunisia/Algiers) *
Hafsids *
Carinthia - ( I have now, thx Havard and Kaigon)
Duchy of Pomerelia - (I now have, thx mfigueras and havard)
Duchy of Franconia - ( I have now, thx Havard and Kaigon)
Khwarezmian Empire (nee Persia?) - (I have a representation, thx Kaigon)
Marinids * - (I now have, thx Garbon and Kaigon)
Ghor Empire (North India)
Khanate of the Great Khan
Ayyubid Dominions (pre-Mamluks) *
March of Meissen - (I now have, thx havard and EEP)
Cuman Turks * - (I now have, thx mfigueras and Kaigon)
Tai (Thai)
Duchy of Swabia - ( I have now, thx Havard and Kaigon)
Ziyanids * - (I now have, thx garbon and EEP)

* all those with a star can easily be represented by the myriad of generic muslim shields going around, but I would like some accurate ones. But saying that, if any-one knows where I can get the non-starred ones that would be tickety-boo.

Yours, patiently (possibly vainly;) ) in hope
A.

Further EDIT: thanks to those mentioned I have some shield sets completed already. Thanks again.

yours, pleased with the responses

If thats the same as Tlemcen's dynasty, if you do a search in this forum for Tlemcen, there should be a thread with a source image there. Otherwise they do have it at Flags of the World, though I'm sure it'll pop up if you just search for Tlemcen on Google.

You might want to look over on Languish's forum at the Mongolian scenario, link in my sig ;) , as I know that they did or our doing graphics for some of these nations.

White flags (9th to 17th cent.)
The use of the flag in Morocco as a symbol of the state dates way back to the Almoravide dynasty (1062-1125 AD). Prior to this time, white silk banners were often carried in battle, sometimes with Koranic inscriptions written on them. The Almoravides institutionalized this practice. They gave one banner to every unit of 100 soldiers; the leaders always carried one inscribed: «There is no god but god, and Mohammad is His Prophet». The two following dynasties (the Merinides and the Saadiens) continued the use of the White flag as the symbol of the State.

The Lombard league was a league of free cities, not a "state", and I don't think they ever used a common flag/CoA...

Carinthia
"the Province of Carinthia has an historical coat of arms. The shield is per paale or and gules; dexter there are three lions sable, armed langued gules, sinister a fess argent. The crowned tournament helmet with mantling gules-or bears two buffalo horns or, each adorned on the outside with five rods or; three linden leaves sable are suspended from the rods on the right, three linden leaves gules from the ones on the left. (...) Originally the Carinthian Dukes from the Sponheim family bore a black panther on their coat of arms. From 1237 onwards, Ulrich III bore the current Carinthian coat of arms which, after the extinction of the Sponheim line, was adopted by Ottokaar II Premysl and later by the Habsburgs." (link).

Duchy of Pomerelia (not pommerania)
I think this is the one. Pomerelia is Pomorze in Polish, right?

Anyway - you can't go wrong with a griffin in that area :D

Duchy of Franconia
"The flag of Franconia is a banner of the arms of the region, as they appear within the arms of Bavaria. They are nicknamed the Franconian rake." (link)

March of Meissen
"The arms show the historical arms of the County of Meissen. " (link)

WOW! thanks guys
(quick responses too):)

Garbon, thanks for info, I think I know where to get a white shield and the shield of Tlemcan, so, much appreciated.:) Nice Forum Languish has too. If I can persuade mfigureas to make his Ayyubid shield downloadable that would be nice. :-D

Havard, cor blimey guv!
They are nice, good links too, will look at further. Will annoy Kaigon or some-one else to make them into shields and flags in the Grand Request Thread.:D

Much appreciated, to both of you.

The standard EU2 flad/shields for Würtsburg is displaying the Franconia arms, IIRC. The EEP has added Meissen IIRC, so there should be something to grab there I guess...

with 2 possible flags:

You can download them here

For the ayyubid shield, don't worry, I'll upload it to my webspace asap.

I am under the impression that Pomorze (along the sea) refers to Poland's Baltic coast lands. Originally, Pomorze, aka Pomerania, referred to the coastal lands east of the Elbe. Gradually, Germans settled into the Slavic lands east and slightly west of the Elbe. They called the land west of the Elbe Vorpommern and the land east of the Elbe Hinterpommern. The Pomeranian land not settled by the Germans (still under Polish rule) was called Pomerelia/Pommerellen by the Germanic-speaking world. To the Poles, it was still Pomorze (while the Germans did not consider it part of Pomerania). Contemporary Pomerania is divided into three sections: Zachodniopomorskie (historical Hinterpommern), Pomorskie (Pomerelia, Kashubia), and Vorpommern (in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern).

I think. :p

Thanks guys for the info.

MKJ, Pity about no source image for Khwarezmian Empire. At www.flaggenlexikon.de/index2-e.htm there is an entry for Chorasmia (sp), my German is not very good, but is this in the same area? It states that it was an independent state in Central Asia until 1924 (so not same state I know).

It is just a black flag, but I have decided to use it at any rate.

Thanks all for the responses so far. it is much appreciated.

Oh, and Havard, I found the Meissen set from EEP thanks.

Chorasmia is the ancient precursor state to Kwarazm, but you'll be happy to learn that it's the same state that Ghenghis khan annihilated it in the 13th century.

The 1924 Kwarazm was a Turkish state that took on the same name as Chorasmia, but Chorasmia was a Scythian state, so no not really the same state per se. Same name though.

Lions that are facing you are called Leopards (original 'Lebard' or 'Lebarden'), while lions looking to the side are called 'Lions'.
The term originated about 1450 in Stockholm.

Surprisingly the oldest known 3-lion ‘shield’, - the current Danish small arms (national arms) – King Knud IV’s seal from 1190, displays ‘Leopards’ and not ‘Lions’.
