Ive been thinking about the potential DH holds for the creation of a Space Age mod. I thought that sea provinces could be used to model space, with navies taking the role of space fleets. Land provinces would show planets, and be placed in such a way to form a disc (So planets would be 2D). Planets would have multiple zones on them, each probably the size of a country, so for example the British Isles on earth might be made up of 4 provinces (Not to say real planets would be used). Airforces could be used to model short range planetary based ships, capable of engaging space and land targets. Ships would be just basic hulls when built, with the player deciding which weapon systems to add to them (Fighter bays, Torpedoes, Gun Batteries, Ramming Prows, etc...)

The focus would be upon epic battles involving millions of men on each side, fighting over things like jungle worlds, dusty wastelands, city planets.

Anyone have any thoughts?

Inspired by a mix of things really, WH40k included.

Id be happy for anyone to help, but I want to see how much interest there is before I start anything.

Ok, it seems theres quite some interest in this mod.

Sharky, Vorlend and Cesar, as youve offered to help, mind telling me what sort of stuff you can help with?

I think its best if we start by designing a general layout for the map, and some basic sketched out ideas for factions. If anyone has any ideas, could they post them?
 
Possible factions:

Main Human faction with Earth as capital.

Various Human rebel and splinter factions either allied or against the main faction

A Savage Alien Warrior race

A Zerg/Tyranid-like race with low IC but cheap units.

A "Ancient Evil" race similar to the Necrons or Reapers that appears mid game so add scenario for players who want to start as that faction

A bunch of very advanced races with high IC

Ocean=Space but it has to be colored full black with stars, don't know how.

Possible Ideologies(need help with this):

NS - ?
PA - ?
FA - Authoritarian
SC - ?
SD - ?
SL - ?
ML - ?
ST - Absolute Utilitarianism
LWR - Utilitarian Radical
LE - Utilitarianism

We probaly should just make a sandbox map first without any events. Btw for modding i am still learning and m eager to learn but for now I could make ministers and tech teams
 
Ok, well heres a few ideas:

United States of Earth (Main human faction):

Low tech, but high in numbers and cheap to build infantry (Sorta like a Colonial Marine/Starship Troopers/Imperial Guard hybrid)
Lots of air mobile stuff, nearly all infantry are air mobile (This would translate much like Airmobile infantry in DH)
Almost all armour of medium nature, focused on conventional firepower, basically just teched up Abrams tanks
Ships focused heavily on basic weapons batteries and shipbourne fighters
Starts behind in research, but has some very powerful tech teams it can use to catch up quickly in certain fields

Perhaps a couple of splinter colonies such as Mars, and maybe some Space Pirates?

The Disraelite Empire (Space version of Victorian Britain):

Some form of Aliens, probably with massive sideburn and moustache like facial features
Highly drilled and disciplined foot soldiers
Tanks like giant land ships
Ships focused on broadsides and boarding actions
Heavily industrial, but not very advanced in methods

Some form of bug race:

Biological weaponry
Ships giant living creatures
No tanks or aircraft as such, just giant/flying creatures
Cheap units, but mostly ineffective
High IC due to workers not sleeping/working well as a team

Some form of race of doom/evil:

Highly advanced weaponry
All units best in their field
Expensive units
Moderate to low IC (Mainly a warrior race)

Also, does anyone have experience working with maps/willing to give it a go? For some reason I cant get the extractor to work, despite following the tutorials.
 
I'm just pondering the length of time you imagine for getting your own map up and running...

Would it not be a better idea to use the game as it is now... with the Earth map as it is... (for the moment).. to allow you to develop your story/gameplay first.

You could use the present map as an alternative Earth, in another galaxy/ dimension?.. An alien/or not so alien replica.. a physical duplicate.. instead Your Earth is totally different in many ways... just a suggestion:)
 
Trouble with that is, it wouldnt so much be space age as simply future age.

The map should be simpler than most anyway, seeing as everything can be copy pasted then changed slightly.

Good Stuff! I was just worried about you getting bogged down .. losing enthusiasm.. and this GREAT IDEA for a mod losing impetus. Keeping up your enthusiasm is the hardest part of modding.. when you run into problems... I look forward to playing your mod.. Cheers

I can mod events, units, graphics. Never mod map, but can learn that.

Main human faction ideas:

United Nations (Several semi-independant earth Superpowers bended together in a faction):

Earth consisted of few countries USA, EU, China etc. Each controling a continent(1-3 provinces) or so. They all part of one alliance - the UN. The leader is "UN Headquarters" country based in Switzerland. United Nations wage ruthles imperialist expansion and space colonisation policies and experiencing ongoing War of Colonial Independence(several colonies tries to brake away from "mother earth").
Each of earth superpowers must have specific "flavour", and different spheres of space expansion but share common interests. Megacorps may be added too.

And there must be Aliens ofc. :happy: Like idea of Victorian Britain in space(remind me of some anime series).

How about for earth we have 3 factions, one US dominated, one EU dominated and one China dominated? These could be all competing with each other in some form of 3 way Cold War?

Well the mod kinda losses some of its appeal when it moves away from the "exotic aliens" and into the "re-run of recent history" area
 
I wasnt really keen on the idea myself, was more throwing it out there. I think some form of unified nation for earth is best. Like the United States of Earth or somesuch.
