I just realized that there is supposed to be a Spacer Junk Ship. However I have found no way to acquire one. Not with a coastal capital, not with annexing them in a coastal city. Am I missing something or is this simply a bug?

You're not missing anything nor is it a bug. Buying naval units from NPCs simply doesn't exist as a feature.
One could argue it should be implemented but I doubt it will happen just for the sake of Junk Ships. Then again maybe it's not that complicated to do, I dunno.

Hm, why is that unit in the game then? It was also introduced in the Spacer dev journal. I highly doubt having a unit that never appears is intended behaviour.
There are a ton of units you can't get access to. Like all the paragon heavy units for example. It's not a bug, it's intended this way.
It does appear though, just only as enemy. It's not like it only exists as a game file but is never used ingame ^_^
Yeah, it's basically just there so you can fight it from time to time and to give Spacers a water presence. It's another "mob unit".
All imperial units basically unavailable except for rare finds.Imperial walker is especially op but so far i only found imperial behemoth and buggy/flyer in random crates.
