The First Great War (1578-1584) - 1583 The Forces of evil retreat

Never let it be said that I am not a fair and just man. Spain has been involve in the war now for nearly five year and each time we bring one chapter to a close, another foolish king or prince will declare his wish that Spain be humbled. I have never said that I was a humble man.

January

Tax collector promoted in four provinces across the empire and fortifications improved in Moravia and Vestfold.

Albe brings a force of 21600 infantry and 7300 cavalry to attack a Durch force of 24600 infantry, 11900 cavalry and 90 cannon in Zeeland. After inflicting crushing losses on the Dutch of over 17000 he retreats with his own losses of less than 4000. I believe that he was concerned about cavalry superiority of the Dutch.

In Africa, a small force of 3000 defeats a Nubian force of twice the size in Batn-al-Hajar while a force of 3000 Aden infantry are defeated by our small siege force in Jordan.

We establish a colony in Amgoun while Tchumkan attempt fails. The province of Stanovoe is discovered and we clear it of those annoying natives.

February

Colonisation attempt fails in Djugdjur. More colonists sent to both Tchumkan and Djugdjur.

March

The month brings fighting in the colonies as a force of 500 English cavalry attack 200 infantry guarding our Kebec colony. They are crushed but the natives in the area remain peacefully unmoved by events around them. Why can't all natives be like them?

Two Nubian forces are defeated in Sudan and Batn-al-Hajar.

In the low countries, Netherlands forces besiege Artois as the Hague falls to our forces. We offer the Dutch peace in return for their only colony and their centre of trade in Yucatan. They are stubborn and defiant. It hurts me deeply to inflict any greater suffering on our former subjects but, when this story is told, let it be known that they have brought this upon themselves.

April

Farnese disembarks troops in Anglia and lays siege to London. This is a somewhat risky venture for us but I trust to Farnese's genius to win us through. The Queen of England was, apparently, spirited of to some quite corner of Wiltshire.

Austria prove successful in their war against Bohemia by forcing them to convert their state religion to Catholic. I have to admit now that this was never an effective strategy for Spain and I doubt it will work here. We use the opportunity to send a gift to Bohemia to help mend relations (-200 to -73)

A Navarra force of 6400 infantry, 4700 cavalry and 21 guns attack our siege force of 7900 infantry, 1000 cavalry and 60 guns in Navarra. At the same time, Don Juan leads a force of 12500 infantry, 2400 cavalry and 20 guns to attack Aden's siege force of 21100 infantry and 4400 cavalry in Syria.

We send a group of colonists to Catskill province in North America. In Siberia we discover Boureia province

May

The month brings great successes for Spain with the capture of Calais from England. After defeating the Navarra relief force we then capture the capital. Navarra hand over their full treasury of 57D as a form of war reparations. Let this be a lesson to all who dare to affront me. The Aden siege force in Syria is crushed completely by Don Juan's genius and we order an assault on Batn-al-Hajar in Nubia.

But war is to be prolonged yet further as Sweden take the opportunity at a quick land grab while Farnese is on tour around London. Georgia support Sweden which is of no consequence to us. All our small allies support us but I do not understand what they will be doing in this campaign.

June

Albe leads a force of 31800 infantry, 6500 cavalry and 144 guns against William of Orange's siege force in Artois of 3500 infantry, 8800 cavalry and 70 guns. The attack is enough to bring the Dutch to the table. They offer us Yucatan and we accept. So many wasted lives and for what?

Our successes continue with the capture of Roanoke from England, Baghdad from Iraq and Batn-al-Hajar from Nubia. Iraq have no choice but to agree to peace ceding the province of Basrah and their full treasury of 44D. Don Juan is reported to be happy with the terms.

Pressing matters in Nubia, we assault Sudan with 2500 infantry and 34 guns with a much large force on route

July

Yet more successes. Mecklemberg capitulates to our constant bombardment while Don Juan assaults Arabia and the city is taken quickly.

August

Sudan finally falls after a month of fighting and we demand reparations of Nubia. They are to give us their full treasury and the provinces of Batn-al-Hajar and Nubia. They have little choice to accept. Short of allies, the Hedjaz decide to come to terms and offer Jordan for peace. We accept the terms and now have peace in the region.

To press matters in the north, we assault Stralsund in Western pomerania with 16000 infantry and 69 cannon.

We discover Ekimcan in Siberia.

September

Medina Sidonia attacks English fleet of 11 warships and 19 transports with his own fleet of 33 warships. The fleet was responsible for droppoing English troops in Spain itself: a bold move indeed and one that may return to haunt the English as the fleet is utterly routed losing all 11 warships and 11 transports while Medina Sidonia loses just one warship. The English army will have a long journey home.

Troops are ferried from the Low Countries to Scandinavia where our force of 9800 infantry and 67 guns attack a Swedish army of 16300 infantry in Ostlandet. The Swedes are defeated and retreat.

As the assault in Stralsund peters out, the Hanseatic League offer us a white peace. I see no reason to prolong the conflict and have, in any way, a mind to isolate the English. We therefore accept the offer.

It is an appropriate strategy as London falls to Farnese and are demands are made known to Parliament. We are to take Roanoke and Penobscot colonies - the latter still only 300 people - and the terms are too generous for the English to refuse. Now for the Swedes.

In Siberia, we discover Sikhote and Nagorje and clear the provinces of native peoples. We establish a colony in Sofiisk

Bailiffs are promoted in three captured provinces while Batn-al-Hajar in Africa is fortified.

October

The king reminds me of some trivial matters. Something about a Royal Marriage with Venice, Keeping Thuringen and Conquering Styria. It is of no consequence.

We establish a colony in Catskill.

A second Swedish force is defeated in Ostlandet.

November

The king continues to talk nonsense wishing us to Conquer Styria, Keep Thuringen and keep the French out of the Caribbean.

In Siberia, we discover Nerchansk

There is no news from the war against Sweden. This is not the time to embark on a major campaign in the region. Spring it will be and you can be assured it will be swift and deadly.

December

We discover Mogotcha and Kalar in Siberia. I hear that it is very cold. The men continue to push on into the interior for their moment of fame. I have absolutely no idea who is leading the expedition but no doubt somebody will have written a diary.

**********************

As the year comes to an end I survey the results of a long war but nonetheless beneficial for Spain. In the colonies we have gained Roanoke, Penobscot (colony), and Yucatan (colony) - the latter being a trading centre. In Africa we have gained Nubia and Batn-al-Hajar. In the Middle East we have gained Judea, Syria, Jordan, Kars and Basrah. In Europe, Moravia, Erz and Sudeten while in Scandinavia we have gained Vestfold, Ostlandet and Trondelag. A total of 16 province.

Spain's domains now reach to even great parts of the globe. Once it is complete, we shall have a final peace. Until that time, I still have much to do.

i go out of town for a few days, and i come back and ulmo's got don juan running around with the sultan's harems and spain force-converting everyone (no one expects the spanish inquisition!). yeesh. you'd think the gods would have learned to play nice by now. :p

Our main weapon is fear, fear and surprise. Our two main weapons are fear, and surprise, and ulmo... :D

Is there any particular reason, Coeur de Lion, that you didn't annex Navarre? They are a national province of yours, and it's only one province.

To answer the question as put, that's 6 BB points. I had in mind to diplo-annex all the minors but now I see how much I'm hated in the world I may think again - what's the difference between BB 57 and BB 63 :D

Still, I'm a stubborn old dog and I'll continue with the job of presents, ally, marriage, presents, presents, vassal then leave them for 10 years, unlrss you want a war before more presents and annex - at which point they show two fingers and break vassalage before I go back to square 3 ;)

NB: If someone else annexes and they you capture in a war you save 5 BB points. There's a tip from someone who hasn't quite figure out the BB rules ;)

The First Great War (1578-1584) - 1584 The Final Offensive

The year begins with hope that the war with Sweden can be swiftly concluded and that peace will reign once war in the empire. Farnese prepares his troops for a spring offensive. The start of the year is a time for dealing with menial tasks such as the funding of fort upgrades in Ostlandet, Trondelag, Nipigon and Cuzco. Chief judges are appointed in Judea and Canuma.

News comes thick and fast from the colonial department that the province by the name of Khretset was cleared of natives and a group of settlers were sent to the region. Another province called Chilka was discovered and the native villages were destroyed. Colonies were established in Tchumkan and Djugdjur and colonist groups were sent to Baladok and Nagorje

Farnese’s offensive begins in February as his force of 12200 infantry and 7500 cannon attack a Swedish force of 12200 infantry and 1000 cavalry in Vastergotland. The Swedes are almost completely annihilated for the loss of little over 2000 Spanish infantry.

After settling in to a brief siege Farnese assaults the city in March and captures it quickly. He then turns towards the Swedish capital. On arriving he crushes the Swedish force in Svealand and assaults the walls of the capital immediately. By May the city of Stockholm is ours and we are able to negotiate a total peace taking the province of Vastergotland and 15D from Sweden.

The king is most pleased that the war has finally been brought to an end. Unrest in the kingdom is still high and many revolts still need to be suppressed. But the population is at least appeased that the threat of war has left us.

It has been a monumental affair but one that has brought Spain to new heights. Territory has been gain in five continents. Significant gains have seen us gain a presence in Scandinavia while our provinces in the Middle East and North Africa have expanded through the significant gains made there.

Spain’s generals are widely regarded as brilliant. Don Juan takes the credit for the great gains made in the Middle East while Albe gained significant successes in the Low Countries. Farnese earned stunning victories in Denmark, England and Sweden and is being called the “Don Juan of the North”

I take time to review the new maps we now have covering lands discovered in the East. It is clear to me that we have successfully managed to colonise many provinces all over the region and Siberia clearly offers huge potential for expanding our lands further.

But for now we must return to more mundane matters. We have won the war, that is not in doubt, but must build on these successes.

I should be posting another update later but kept the last one brief so that it would only cover the conclusion of the war.

Just checked an older save game files - albeit later in the game that this AAR has reached - and I saw BB of 34. It seems that the taking provinces in defensive wars is still adding to BB though I haven't quite figured out why. Any ideas?

But this is making the diplo-annex rather difficult. No-one seems to want to accept.

Then did Ulmo look on the world and upon the lands that Spain had gathered. And the Valar were saddened for their peoples were much beset by Ulmo’s forces and fain would they act but yet were they unable to do so since the release of the AI into the world. Thus was the prophecy of Ulmo fulfilled and the AI was shown to be weak and powerless even as it forbade the Gods to act directly on behalf of their chosen ones

But neither did the Valar remain inactive and ever would they seek to thwart Ulmo’s greater designs. Ossë raised up fleets of marauding ships that would harass merchant fleets and navies alike thereby harming trade. Ceaselessly would the corsairs appear and Spain was beset with them in all corners of the world. Even would these ships oft defeat the Spanish navy under through Ossë’s own guile and protection.

Yet did Ulmo seek to aid the Spanish and the pirates were never allowed to become a serious threat to Spain.

But Ulmo then went forth into the great oceans and traversed the Spanish lands from Winisk in Hudson bay, through the caribbean lands to the South American lands and across the mighty pacific where lay the new lands in Australia, Indonesia and Siberia. Then did he think to himself of the need for harbours for ships for their was too great a distance between the Atlantic ports of Spain and those in Indonesia, Australia or North Africa. Other stopping points were needed along the way and thus did Ulmo guide Gamboa to find new harbours for the Spanish fleets

As I said earlier, here's the second update since the earlier one was a little brief. Patience with the screenshots. I'll work something out when I have a little more time.

Times of peace

1584 May-Dec

It is such a long time since we were at peace with the world that I sometimes have a little trouble remembering how we are supposed to react to everyday things. The day before yesterday, we were having revolts in all parts of the kingdom, and these were often related to the tiredness from the war, although some were put down to having roots in nationalist tendencies of our new subjects. With the end of the war, one would have thought that some rebellions would simply die down but this is not the case at all. Perhaps the whole rioting since simply gains enough momentum before taking on a life of it’s own.

Well we will have to deal with these rebels in time although there is no question of us doing anything other than suppressing any nationalist movements that may rise up. They are all now part of the Spanish empire and these people had better get used to the fact.

But we will adopt a different approach to the Protestant nations. Two gifts were sent to Wurtemberg by summer (-200 to –176 to –78) and one to Saxony (-200 to –185). I have decided to try to improve the relations we have with our German neighbours.

Rebels are defeated in Tuxpan, Moravia and Trondelag although we have to recapture Trondheim from the rebel garrison. I am particularly concerned about the rebellion in Mexico so it is decided that permanent forces will be stationed around the world to deal with regional unrest. We promote a bailiff in our new province of Vastergotland

Rebellions are also put down in Holstein and Sudeten while Trondheim is recapture by Imperial troops in October.

On the colonial front, we discover the lands of Tchita and Buriat and natives are dispersed. We also clear the island province of Samar of natives. Colonists are sent to Nakhodka and Sofiisk

1585

At the start of the year a Genoan merchant by the name of Spinola appears in Nice and is appointed by the king to lead the army stationed in the province. He appears to be a fine general, possibly even better than Farnese or Don Juan. Let us hope that he has the chance to prove himself in the years to come although for now we have little use for him given our peaceful stance vis-a-vis all other nations.

The year is one of consolidation with fortifications expanded in Irondekoit and Jordan. Tax collectors are appointed in Basrah and Nipigon and a governor is appointed in Kleves. Chief judges are appointed in Trondelag, Roanoke, Kars, Nubia, Batn-al- Hajar and Vastergotland

In Siberia we discover the provinces of Ulan Ude, Selenga and Irkutsk although the troops are under special orders to allow natives in Selenga to live peacefully. Colonists are established in Khretset, Nagorje while the attempt to colonise Baladok fails. Further groups of colonists are sent to Samar, Bogorodski, Stanovoe, Aleutes, Nagorje and Khretset and our existing colonies in Nakhodka, Sofiisk and Bogorodski expand.

Diplomacy takes the form of gifts this year with personal gifts to Bavaria (+97 to +200), Baden (+70 to +98), Hessen (-200 to –85), Hanover (-200 to –179), Brandenberg (-200 to –61), Saxony (-187 to –160) and a further gift to Hanover (-179 to –72). When I think of the lengths we must go to just so that our neighbours will stop loathing us. I can see the day approaching when we shall not be the most loathed nation on earth.

Revolts rise during the year in Trondelag, Thuringen, Sudeten, Holstein, Jylland, Bremen and all are successfully repressed by the end of the year.

Towards the end of the year, our army of Messina march into Neapolitan Apulia just to confirm how much part of Spain, Naples has become. It is a small step between their current role as vassal and that of full participation in the benefits of Spanish empire.

1586

New year brings great news as our fledgling gold colony in Enkan makes the proud boast that it is a rich centre of trade for the region. It is very pleasing news and I believe encourages me to press for colonisation of the neighbouring provinces.

Bohemia also turns it’s back on the terms of the peace treaty it had signed with Austria and returns to the Protestant cause. The king and his court are most angry. The beginning of the year all sees Poland and France settling their differences.

In Siberia, our attempt to colonise Stanovoe succeeds and colonists are sent to Djagdi. We also discover Chataja province and meet a small Russian force in the province. From what I heard about it later, it appears that these were part of a force led by a famed Russian explorer who had since died. Unfortunately, it appears that the remaining men have no idea where they are or how to return home and have taken to foraging in the rough wilderness there.

Moving to administrative matters, we raise up Chief Judges in Ostlandet, Basrah, Irondekoit and Cuzco.

Later in January, our colony is successfully established n Samar while shortly afterwards, we clear Palawan of natives and colonists are sent there. Further discoveries in Siberia uncover the province of Zima.

It is not long, however, before I am reminded of the recurring theme of war when Turkey use the onset of the spring thaw to declare war on the Mameluks. I strongly believe that this will be the Mameluks last war as, without allies, they must fight also against the Hedjaz, Iraq, Aden and Wallachia.

It is one and the same unlike Farnese who was also there but this one's different.

Actually just got out of a seriously long BB war. Several cities still to take back from rebels. Two days of peace and the Turks declare war....

...and the population is all raring to go to war again :D

Peasant 1: "Weren't you just saying a few days ago how fed up you were with this war. All ready for rebellion"
Peasant 2: "What war? Anyway, so what! This is a new war, totally different to the last one whenever it was. That's the sort of talk you'd only expect of rebel scum"

The Watchful Peace (1586-1588)

1586

Domestic matters continue to take precedence as revolts rise in Thuringen in March, Erz in April and Bremen in June. The Erz revolt is put down quickly although troop displacements mean that Bremen and Thuringen are occupied by rebels until late summer.

In May, Russia renews their conflict with Sibir, no doubt hoping to make in roads into the vast Siberian lands that we have opened up. Further to their east, we discover the provinces of Tannu Ola and Saian making a direct link to territories already known to the Russians. Nagorje colony is expanded by the expedition to Khretset fails. We also establish a colony in Djagdi and send another group of colonists to Kalar. A separate group of colonists are sent to Okhotsk.

De Gamboa explores new sea routes and discovers new lands in New Guinea which he names Kalepam. He then feels drawn to explore sea routes far to the south of India. Meanwhile, Sorong province on the tip of New Guinea is cleared of natives. Colonists are sent towards the end of the year to establish a Spanish presence there.

Around the world, our expedition to colonise Aleutes fails but an attempt to expand our fox colony is successful.

Gifts are sent this year to Palatinat (-156 to –111) and England (-199 to –139) and a state gift is sent to Naples (-70 to +84)

In July, our merchants announce that they have developed a form of Protectionism (Trade Level 7). Our income from trade improves significantly before the end of the year.

1587

Census taxes are used to fund another state gift to Naples (+81 to +200). Elsewhere, fortifications in Trondelag, Roanoke and Batn-al-Hajar are improved while a chief judge are appointed in Nipigon

By the end of January, reports from North Africa tell us that Turkey has captured Egypt from the Mameluks.

De Gamboa’s expeditions in the Southern Indian Oceans reveal new lands. Having discovered what appears to be a large island of the coast of Africa, he designates the region of Antsirana as inhabitable. He is then drawn to turn north west where he discovers two hospitable sugar-rich islands. He names the islands Reunion and Bourbon: I suspect that we are seeing a little too much of the francophile in the man. By mid spring he discovers further inhabitable lands in the north of the island and this is named Ambovombe. Another island to the north is named Mahe.

In February, a colony was successfully established in Palawan and Kalepam was cleared of natives before colonists were sent. Colonists were also sent to Reunion in April and Bourbon in June, while we report further successful colonisation in Okhotsk in May.

By July, reports from the Russo-Sibir war inform us that Russia has captured the provinces of Kurgan

In August, we offer Naples to opportunity to join the Spanish empire as full member. After rejecting our first approach they agree to our proposals and the southern tip of Italy is now all in Spanish hands. Naples is fortified immediately.

Returning to the colonisation front, we notice that the Russians are attempting to colonise Alga in the Caspian region and England are turning their attention to the province of Towoomba in Australia. We a privately grateful to each of these countries since both areas were ones that we did not feel that we wished to colonise ourselves. Let the other nations do the hard work of developing the region before we add the lands to our own. In late August our Baladok colony is successfully established.

In diplomatic matters, we present two gifts to Wurtemberg in the second half of the year (-119 to –57 to 39) and then admit them to our alliance. It is somewhat ironic that it was barely a decade ago when Spain and Wurtemberg had fought a brief war over which I was vehemently behind the catholic cause. I now believe that our whole approach to the problem was flawed and shall endeavour to use more subtle means in future to woo the Germans to the Spanish camp.

In October we successfully establish a colony in Kalar and send another group of colonists to Kalakan. Our Sorong colony is established in November while Spanish colonists also plant the seed of a new province on the island of Reunion. The island will drastically help in providing stage posts for ships to travel directly from Spain to India and East Africa without the need to take the longer route across the Pacific Ocean.

Troops from Australia disembark on Taranaki to clear the province of a large force of aggressive natives. They attack us immediately and we have no choice but to retaliate to ensure that such things do not happen at a later time.

Our governors in the Middle East report that the Ottomans have now captured Jerusalem from the Mameluks leaving only the province of Kirkuk to fall. Ironically the Turks cannot get their troops to Kirkuk so will have to rely on their allies to take this province if they wish to annex the Mameluk kingdoms.

1588

New Year celebrations descend into riots in Apulia and Genoa although the Apulia rebels are swiftly dealt with by our forces in the province.

Fortifications in Apulia and Vastergotland were reinforced while gifts we sent to the rulers of The Palatinate (-142 to –29), Baden (+60 to +173) and Saxony (-189 to –83).

We discover that the English are now attempting to colonise Chicoutimi to the north of the bay of St Lawrence while far away, we are attacked by natives in Whangerei.

February brings news of the successful colonisation of Bourbon while colonists are sent to Whangerei in March and Mahe in April. Our Kalepam colony is successfully established in May.

The king reminds me that it was been many years – well nearly three to be precise – since Spain has been at war. The populace are starting to grow restless with little better to do that improve their own miserable lot. In response to the king, I reveal to him but one target. We will, at some stage be involved in a battle for supremacy in the Middle East against Turkey and its allies. This must be our next target. We begin casting cannon in the region as our forces are built up in preparation for the struggle ahead.

June sees us send another group of hopefuls to the cold, wet, desolate islands of Aleutes. With nothing better to do on the islands but breed, I am confident that our 100 colonists will grow to a city in little time. In the same month, we find work for Spinola as his country-folk are brutally suppressed by his brilliant Lt-generalship. News also arrives of the Russian capture of Irgiz.

In August peasants in Sudeten rises up again claiming suppression of their Bohemian life. Just to spite them we sent a personal gift to Bohemia – or what is left of it – to soften relations between ourselves and this minor irritation. They appear to be easily pleased (-186 to –74).

In September our colony in Kalakan is officially recognised and a group of colonists are sent to Buriat with favourable terms for the extraction of gold being the only way in which we can convince them to travel. In Australia, we welcome a common border with England as settlers install themselves in the province of Towoomba.

In October, the rebels in Sudeten are defeated and news arrives that Iraq has captured Kirkuk thus enabling Turkey to annex the Mameluks. Turkey gains the provinces of Delta and Egypt.

In November the king notifies me once more that we have failed to conquer Styria. He is nonetheless very happy that we have kept the French out of the Caribbean and also kept Thuringen. For December he informs me that we should keep Naples which I am happy to work towards while also ensuring that the Dutch are kept out of Central America and that we have a Royal Marriage with Venice.

Colonists are sent to Wairoa as news arrives of the successful colonisation of Mahe. Ambovombe and Antsirana remain unclaimed but you will probably, by now, be aware of my preferences when it comes to native peoples. Troops board in Sudan to be transported to Madagascar.

The year ends on a very disappointing note when certain clergymen, most notable of whom was Cardinal Alfredo Velasquez di Sevilla have been spreading wild rumour purportedly linked to our recent spat of gifts to the Protestant Princes of Germany. There is considerable unrest in the country which will no doubt precipitate further spending to appease the population (Stability –1)

Colonizing Help

Here's something I just found out last night which might help you if you feel that more colonists will be necessary to populate the "empty" terrain you encounter. Changing the values of the colonists.csv and traders.csv files will affect the values of colonial dynamism even in saved games. Russians not expanding fast enough to Siberia? Up their colonists. If majors are annexable, but you don't want to annex a colonizing major for fear of losing their colonists, give yourself their bonus after you annex them (there would be some justification in that, after all even if France were annexed, there would still be all of those Huguenots etc. that want to venture forth into the New World).

Regarding BB, from a post by Huszics on BB we have:

*THERE IS NO MENTIONING OF OFFENSIVE/DEFENSIVE WARS WHEN IT COMES TO FULL MILITARY FORCE ANNEXATION OF AN ENTIRE COUNTRY. THIS IS INTENTIONAL !!!
ANNEXING AN ENTIRE COUNTRY IS NEVER DEFENSIVE WAREFARE !!!
THUS YOU ALWAYS RECIVE BB FOR EVERY PROVINCE TAKEN IN A FULL ANNEXATION.

Nice AAR, keep up the good work!

The reason I'm confused at how high my CB has become is because I've used that table and all my recent province gains are in RoTW or in Defensive Wars. Always have a CB when I DoW which gives no BB.

The only BB I should be getting are for full annexation which are restricted to one-province RoTW states (BB +1) or diplo-annex (+1/province) with the small caveat that I did annex Aztecs in one go (BB +4) and swallowed a three province Algeria (BB +3)

Re: Colonists, changing the save game files would destroy the objective since I want to colonise world using the game as given. I'm not even converting to reformed for the +2 colonists although this would be a significant boost to my chances....

...well perhaps I may convert to reformed some time in the 18th century. In the 17th century for Spain to go Protestant would just be too ahistorical.

I think I may know what the problem is. If you've been declaring war in support of an ally, and that ally was the one to declare war, then that's not a defensive war. Also keep in mind that if you start making separate peaces, sometimes wars can split into separate wars in which you end up the attacker, even if you didn't start out as such.

Well, keep going with the aar, don't let the BB get you down!

The final years of peace 1589-90

We have already determined who will be our next targets. It will be a battle for supremacy in the Middle East: the gateway to India. Naturally we have another route but the more direct route, preferably through Spanish lands would be more desirable.

For now we have a small problem to deal with as unrest in the clergy has led to a fall in stability. Valuable currency is diverted to restore the balance.

New year income is used to expand forts in Cuzco, Irondekoit and Nipigon while personal gifts are sent to Hessen (-123 to -2) and Hanover (-102 to -60).

At the beginning of the year, Turkey turns its attention north by bringing its allies into their war against Poland, who only have Venice to call upon.

Diplomatic activity during the year is concentrated on Baden who are admitted to our alliance in August. Further correspondence improves relations and they agree to become vassals of Spain in October.

Domestic rebellions continue to cause a little aggravation with uprisings in Corsica in May ans Vastergottland in June. Spinola lands a force on Corsica to deal with those rebels in September while the Vastergotland rebels are defeated in October.

Colonial activity this year sees the establishment of colonies in Taranaki(NZ), Aleutes (Alaska), Buriat (Siberia - Gold). Our colonisation attempt of Ambovombe (Madagascar) fails as does our attempt to set up a trade post in Selenga (Siberia).

In the east, Russia sees success in its war with Sibir by taking the provinces of Irgiz and Orsk plus reparations of 73D from Sibir for peace.

The new year sees a trading centre opening in the English colony of Yanam in India. This would certainly be a very tasty morsel if we could extract this from the English. It would provide an ideal staging post for our planned conquest of the sub-continent. Now where did I put my notes on how to provoke a war with England.

January sees a surprising development as Turkey pays 217D to Venice for peace. Perhaps this is just a ruse to isolate Poland. Well we shall watch closely developments although I strongly suspect that Poland will not be alone in their fight for long.

In early spring we begin to raise up troops in the Middle East for the upcoming campaign. At around the same time troops in the area report to us that Turkish colonists have successfully established a colony in Mudugh (Somalia). It is, I believe, the first non-Spanish colony outside of North America.

Talking of which, April sees Spanish colonies established in Wairoa (NZ) and Antsirana (Madagascar), and a trade post set up in Selenga (Siberia). In July, our colony in Wisconsin expands while a further colony is established in Ambovombe (Madagascar).

But enough of this nonsense. With the Turks at war in the North, now is the time to strike. We declare war and they are supported by their allies; The Hedjaz, Iraq, Aden, Wallachia, Nubia and Oman. Our allies Parma, Wurtemburg and Baden join though I doubt the logic for having asked them to participate. Spinola boards ship in Corsica bound for the Eastern mediterranean while troops in the Middle East move into action

This reminds me of the kid who poked a stick into a hornets nest.:D Lets hope you don't get stung too bad.:D Alright I know your going to wipe the floor with the Turks.;)

OOC: Indeed that was the plan - bit by bit to disassemble the Turkish alliance. And I do get a little stung in the course of it all but not really from where it would be expected. The Turks seemed to be pretty uninterested in fighting this war. Anyway, while I'm here....

The second great war 1589-1593 - Summer 1589 The world erupts
"Spain has declared war on Turkey and is currently crushing the mighty Turkish armies and those of their allies. Despite the fact that we only have a small and ineffective army, and weak or defenseless colonies, we should fight Spain as well", The Earl of Gloucester

The war is but days old as France decides to declare war - on ENGLAND!!! France are able to call on their Papal Allies and on Morocco while England are supported by Navarra, Hanseatic League and Netherlands. Perhaps an even battle were it not for the fact that Spanish lands lie inconveniently between most of these countries and their enemies.

Were it also not for the fact that England's first reaction was to send us a declaration of war. This time the Netherlands and Hanseatic League support them although Navarra, already concerned about the threat from France, judge it wiser to avoid this conflict. In his response to the English ambassador, the King of Navarra was reported to have used very colourful language. Perhaps England did have some grand plan since the war could be used as an excuse for the Dutch and the Hanseatic League to march through Spanish lands - well they would have. Our allies support us.

As August ends, we occupy Arabia and launch an immediate assault.

Not to be left out, Persia declares war in September and bring along their motley collection of allies in Scotland, Denmark and the Knights. All our allies join although I have to admit that Parma is in a precarious position being stationed next to the Knights in Modena.

September sees the capture of Arabia and our troops are quickly withdrawn - after leaving a suitable garrison - to avoid losses from the hellish conditions in the region. Further east, our city of Basrah is besieged by Iraqi forces.

England suffer early as their colony is Bangor is besieged while our forces also occupy the province of Calais and that of their Dutch allies in The Hague.

In our war with Persia and it's allies, we occupy the Danish province of Skane and the Knights territory in Romagna.

First contact with the Turks takes place in Egypt with our force of 13800 infantry, 6200 cavalry and 70 cannon facing a Turkish force of 13500 infancty and 200 cavalry. The battle is a farce with our force sent retreating to Cataract.

Around the same time, another force of 11400 infantry, 900 cavalry and 76 cannon engage an Iraqi force of 15200 infantry, 14800 cavalry and 26 cannon in the province of Iraq. It is a disastrous battle with losses of over 12000 Spaniards to less than 2000 Iraqi soldiers.

But all is not bad as we defeat a Nubian force in Sudan and launch an assault of Khartoum.

October

Don Juan begins a siege of Persian owned Tabriz while Spinola disembarks for Hellas.

News arrives from the Polish-Turkish war that Poland has annexed the province of Wallachia. Perhaps the Poles are going to be very useful in this conflict.

The Danes suffer our wrath with Copenhagen put under siege. At around the same time, we attack a force of the Knights of St John in Modena. Our army numbers around 15000 infantry, 6000 cavalry and 100 cannon against the Knight's army of over 20000 infantry, 7500 cavalry and 20 cannon. We are victorious although losses were small.

In the same month we quell a revolt in Sudeten.

November

Sweden declares war and is supported by Crimea and Georgia. All of our allies support us. I believe patience will be the watchword for this particular theatre of war. Now is not the ideal time of year to invade Sweden although we would be happy to accomodate them should they wish to attack us in our fortified cities.

Spinola arrives in Hellas and lays siege to Athens while Skane is captured from the Danes.

December

A landing party captures the Turkish colony in Mudugh while another from the Adriatic begins a siege in Albania.

In East Africa, the Turks attack our force in Keren and we are defeated. They then proceed to burn our trading post in the province. Most disconcerting!!

In Nubia, we launch a second unsuccessful assault on Khartoum and Spinola launches an assault on Athens. He was to break the city defenses on the final day of the year and from there would move directly to Constantinople.

Still not wishing to ignore colonisation, we burn the English trade post in Placentia (Labrador) and send colonists in their place.

In Italy, there is a second battle against the Knights in Modena with their force of 21000 infantry, 6900 cavalry and 20 cannon attacking our siege force of 10300 infantry, 5200 cavalry and 96 cannon. We decide to retreat this time.

In Scandinavia, Farnese sees a quick opportunity for glory and attacks the Swedish force of 15400 infantry with his own army of 16500 infantry and 115 guns. The Swedish force is crushed.
