The defeat at Leuctra had seemingly been the beginning of the end. Epaminondas of Thebes had somehow defeated Spartan discipline and martial prowess. Cursed be that dog!
The subsequent Helot revolts destabilized our flawless society.
Since then the age of Macedonia has come and gone. Sparta stood outside the great Greek-Macedonian alliance and though it was Sparta that withstood vile Persia for so long, it was barbaric Macedonia and it's young upstart king that ended it.
Since Alexander's death, the world has changed. Sparta has lost it's dominions, it's society has weakened and the great Empires of the Hellenistic world bicker amongst themselves. The mighty Seleucid Empire and ancient Egypt seem to be the two remaining major players but they are weaker than one would assume... .
In the West an expansionist Eagle has arisen in the form of the indomitable Roman Republic. Africa has become the playground of money-loving Carthage, whose mighty navy seems destined to rule the seas.
Facing such behemoths... facing even weakened Macedonia... can Sparta rise again like the legendary Phoenix? Is there still hope for the true defenders of Hellas?

---Journal extract of Archidamus---

The Year of Great Reform, 474:
In his wisdom, King Archidamus has decided on several policies. The changes destabilized Spartan society but he deemed it necessary.
To bolster the thinned out ranks of the Spartan Citizens and thus the longterm strength of the state, a law was passed that granted citizenship to the more financially powerful of the free men. Capable of buying weapons and having on average the intellectual baggage and insight in Spartan ways to partake in Spartan politics, they would make a fine addition.
The Helots have always been a problem too us. And even now, we still have many slaves. Though Sparta will always rely on the work of the Helots, it has been deemed best to diminish their numbers and allow some to have property. Once more a radical law was voted and passed... .

Furthermore our national policies would be modified too.
Focussing on our famous and much feared Heavy Infantry, we imposed a rigid and demanding training of all our citizens, new and old alike. For these new citizens were not to weakene the whole. The Spartan Hoplite was not to become a shallow afterimage of the 300 heroes who faced the Persian Empire at the Hot Gates!
A second national policy was also imposed where citizenship would be made more appealing and accessible. Our goal would be to turn the upper echelons of Greek Society when conquered into true Spartan Citizens who would pass their demanding but strengthening agoge and live ascetic militaristic lives.

Immediately additional Spartan Hoplites were formed, because the King of Sparta knew that dangerous times were ahead. And as soon as opportunity struck, he would lash out and take a piece of Hellas for his own.
The military might of Sparta began to grow and it's Elite armies would have an important role to play, all too soon:

Sparta stood on a crossroads. Would it walk the path of glory or oblivion?

Middle roads are boring and banned from the irrealities of AAR's my friend!

And you will just have to wait and see. I'll be updating in large chunks. It's examperiod so it may take a while but i already have done a nice bit.
Let's just say the immediate future of our trusted fascist oppressors is secure.
Next update will probably be when either i have an additional large expansion or i finish something i already started... .

Looks good :)

The First Spartan-Macedonian War

In the period after the Great Reforms of King Archidamus it was agreed that Sparta's original goals of protecting Greece against foreign intrusion would remain constant. The changing world and not that distant history had taught that Sparta could not remain small. If the Greek ways and the perfect state of Sparta was to survive, Hellas had to be unified.
Argolis was a nearby region suffering under Macedonian dominance and as a first step towards greatness, the Spartan citizens decided to unanimously make freeing Argolis a priority.
Hence the Spartan Military machine would begin to rally. The military budget in itself was kept low and was invested in armaments and gathering manpower.

Military funding had been increased to bolster morale and a firm force had been gathered. 8000 men including 6000 Elite Spartan Hoplites and 2000 supporting Archers marched towards Argolis. Macedonia had neglected its defences and preferred to pester the Minoans with naval warfare and a succesful invasion. Their defences were low and I, King Archidamus deemed the time ready to declare war. We Spartans felt our hearts warm at the prospect of war, for we knew that we would teach the world to fear Spartan steel and Spartan discipline once more! Macedonia had humiliated us in the past, the great Kings of Egypt and the Seleucid Empire scorned us as irrelevant. But things would change. Though traditionally one of the Spartan Kings led the army, i had already given command of our mighty Phalanx to a loyal and competent general. Leonippus Theronid is a man without equal amongst all Spartans. He is truly a descendant of the great Kings of the past, a true son of Sparta! This modern day Heracles has been gifted with a keen tactical mind and his energetic demeanour has made him unwavering against all challenges. A competent military man, a refined administrator and an inspiring orator, he has been a trusted confident of mine for a long time now. He will not fail me. I know he won't because failure is no longer an option. If the war turns badly, Sparta will be taken and Hellas may forever fall in the hands of Macedonia. For a while i thought Epirus may rise to prominence but the Roman Republic that has caused it to loose all momentum and it's ally in Magna Graecia. It all comes down to Sparta now.
Now let us see how the war unfolds and what destiny holds for the true sons of Herakles.

-- From the Journal of Archidamus, King of Sparta --

From the notes made by General Leonnipus Theronid, who would become known as a direct descendant of Herakles:

August-September, 475AVC

At Argolis in August my Phalanx faced an army of 8000. But we were the better men. Their leader was competent but no match for my tactics. Spartan discipline and courage was greater and their armies crashed into our shieldwall.
They fought fiercely but even fighting on hometerritory they could not maintain momentum. It was their undoing.
1049 out of 8000 Macedonian soldiers were killed. 933 of our men fell.
Soon afterwards the siege of Argolis began.

By September a regiment of 1000 soldiers was gathered and foolishly attacked us. The pitiful attempt was quickly ended.

January-April, 476 AVC

Twice the enemy attacked us with a large army, once in January and once in March. And twice we dealt them a crushing blow. The first time we lost 16 men, the second time 13. Against these negligeable losses we dealt by estimates 1789 and 1308losses to the Macedonian army. After the second battle, they scurried of with 6038 men.
Our morale was bolstered and the Spartan Phalanx supported by mild contingents of archers proved effective. Though modesty is a virtue, it is above all that i perfectly used and reinforced my men whenever needed while the enemy general performed miserably.
By April the siege was ended and Argolis was placed under the control of a small garrison.

November, 476 AVC

An army at Sparta was crushingly defeated. My fame rises with each day and my men become more tied to me and more experienced with each battle. I will lead them onwards to further glory as it seems Macedonia is truly no match for me. My agents have told me they are weak. I believe they are correct. The past defeats and this victory has broken their morale and severely hit the strength of their forces in the field.
As always i fought defensively, letting my archers weaken their lines before i counterattacked a weak spot, using my Elite Hoplites backed up with contingent of men held back. As always they broke. The enemy does not learn. But i know better than to become complacent their sudden attack on Sparta could've severely damaged my homeland. I must avoid this happening again. My king has promised me many rewards to add to my titles if i bring him victory. I shall not fail.

March, 1477 AVC

I have been told that the economy suffers under the prolonged conflict. The fear of Helot revolts despite the recent reforms remains and our country is still unstable due to our Kings revolutionary policies and the start of the war with Macedonia. Men like the esteemed Eudamidas have lost vast quantities of money due to it all. His farm and the grainprices are making things difficult on many Spartans. But these are necessary actions. Success will mean stability, wealth and glory for all Spartans in the future. I commend men like Eudamidas for their loyalty through hard times. Clearly we are not a people of lost glories!

May, 477 AVC

At Argolis i faced an army once more. 9241 Macedonian soldiers faced my army of 8000.
261 Spartans fell while holding the line. Unwavering, unwielding until i let my flanks be reinforced.
SpartanShieldwall.jpg

Surprised the enemy general was too slow to react and his army collapsed. 4778 supposedly fell before the Spartan warmachine. The correct us of my reserves remains vital for victory. The quality and discipline of my men, their heroic morale and dedication allow me to hold many back for i know no Spartan will flee without orders to retreat. A goat-herder on the road told me that the Macedonians had fled in total chaos and that my name is becoming legendary throughout Hellas. Soon the name of King Epirus will be forgotten...

December, 477AVC

Once more they attacked. Once more they were crushed. 2493 out of 9933 men died before the Spartan warmachine. 993 of my men died. The losses will soon be replenished. I have grown to see the strenghts and flaws of my men so well that it seems all comes completely natural to me now.
The men have grown truly dedicated to me.

July, 478 AVC

Euboea has fallen to me in a lengthy siege. The victory pleases me. A shame Sparta has no fleet or i would focus first on Crete. But it matters not. The sea can wait, there are still territories to te North i must claim for my King and my people.
News from the homefront indicates that the Royal Family is doing well. Our king and his son are doing well. Archidamus is a competent administrator and charismatic man though he lacks a bit when it comes to military matters. Eudamidas, heir to the throne is average at best but he means well.
I am pleased to hear that the young boys Euripides, Timoleon and Lycurgus Eurypontid are all three doing well. I cannot help but wonder how these princes view the war and how it will influence them.

September-december, 478 AVC

The war continues. I fought the several times enemy at locations such as Argolis and twice at Thessaly.
Macedonia has more manpower than i expected but they lack all intuition, innovation, tactical and strategic insight. They hoped to wear us down... they failed.
There are no Alexanders among them, no great men... they will fail. The war is nearing it's conclusion.

January, 479 AVC

Macedonia concedes and Sparta has gained Thessaly, Argolis and Euboea. If not for a lack of ships, i am certain that i could have conquered Crete for my king.
Already i hear my king plans to replace me, afraid of my sway over the men and my reputation.
But I will make sure that he will reward me well and that i receive good positions throughout my life.
Besides, i know that Sparta will need me again... it is invevitable.

The war against the Greek Triumvirate:

In the period after the First Spartan-Macedonian war, several things happened. After the peace treaty, Macedonia tried to placate us by guaranteeing our freedom. It was pathetic...

The conquest of Argolis improved our fame and the Spartan citizens were thrilled by our successes. But now we decided to turn to our economy and our stability. The Spartan citizens wisely accepted my policy of ensuring stability and of putting our house in order. A new governor appointed, i set out to gather wealth and stability.
A fleet would be vital to in time but only after we became stabler and more wealthy. General Leonnipus Theronid who already had been an influential member of my goverment was applauded for his achievements. And i gladly made him our treasurer. His great ability in administration equalled his uncanny talents for the ways of war. It was a prestigious position and a priority one. Though not of the same prestige as for instance Chancellor, making him Royal Treasurer made him a leading man at peace too. It also underlined my faith in him for in practice he held the most important function given our chosen policy of investing wealth in stability and getting our income back on track. The ex-General, now nicknamed son of Herakles by Greeks far and wide remained relatively modest and performed well allowing us to gain great economic progress.
I decided to restrain military expenditure for now and refused the request to of the Aetolian League to pay us tribute. I had plans of unifying Hellas and if they became tributary, i would feel honorbound to leave them out of my project of a unified Greece. The offer was thus refused.
By June our Hierophant Isocrates Therid had proclaimed the Zeal of Zeus upon Sparta after seeing a blue tit soar over the Temple of Victory.
Joyous news but i had no military plans for the immediate future. Still, if anyone attacked, fate and the Gods would be against them.
A traderoute with the Seleucids was established, trading wood out of Argolis with grain out of Marmarica. It might ensure they stay out of our hair.
By July a Temple was damagd by fire but i could not warrant spending money on it. The priests were displeased and faith faltered. A bad ome was upon us!
Roman Syracus and Thessaly would trade Roman grain for Greek Horses. I hope to keep the Romans far away. But it may be difficult. I hope no fools in Hellas give them a cassus belli for i want to unify Hellas before i potentially face the Italian behemoth. For all their barbarism, these Roman farmers are reputedly stubborn, unwavering and incredibly pragmatic and adaptive. A war with them might break the still brittle Spartan hegemony.
If anything i know that history can be harsh on those who loose. A single loss against Thebe made our rising star falter. I will avoid it happening again until my policies fully bear fruit. By February 480 AVC i had increased stability and my economy was on tracks. Unforeseen luck had aided me in these regards as good management had further solidified the state that Sparta had become. I proposed allying to Macedonia but found little enthusiasm with the Spartan citizens. I can understand this but an alliance with Macedonian might bear advantages. And if need be we can always manipulate them into causing wars for us.
In July 7000 rebels were put down by our army at negligeable losses. Furthermore i decided on a new national policy. We would become masters of cavalry too now that we had access to horses. Training would allow our citizens to ride them perfectly. Though i would not purchase them for our army yet. The money was needed for a fleet and stability.
In augustus, 480 AVC stability was lost as i declared war on Epirus. We had prepared for war, we stood strong and the mightiest of generals was at our side. It was thus that Sparta faced Epirus, Magnae Graecia and the Achaean League. Victory in this war would put us fully on the road to glory and conquest. I had prepared well and Leonnipus once more set to the field at the head of our 8000 Men. He had no cavalry yet and still lacked enough archers but soon we'd be able to compose an army worthy of the growing Spartan reputation. I was told the Spartan Hoplites cheered him as he arrived, mounted and armored to lead them. The cunning general is growing too popular and too confident but i made a deal with him regarding that, much wealth would be his if he succeeded. And wealth and glory can even move a true Spartan into obedience. For now the time is his once more while i deal with matters on the homefront. Epirus will be his first target... .

-- From the Journal of Archidamus, King of Sparta --

WarwithTriumvirate.jpg

From diverse notes made by General Leonnipus Theronid and the Journal of King Archidamus:

Despite a revolt in Argolis, i marched onwards with the army assigned to me.
My goal... Epirus!
The enemy fielded 5000 well-led men before our force of 8000... we crushed them thoroughly.
The Battle of Epirus cost the former rising star it's entire remaining army. Its war with Rome had not been kind. My army lost 179 soldiers ... no more. Our typical stratagems worked marvelously.
Though i have decided to get our king to aquire us a good cavalry after this war. We will have the wealth needed to build a powerful army. In fact in the aftermath of the Battle of Epirus i came up with the idea of two armies. One offensive, one defensive, for now we are still military to weak to recover from a major setback. Nations such as the Seleucids, Rome or Carthage are known to field massive armies. It is time we manage to do the same. But the king seems of the same mind. This next step has become inevitable... .

October has come and Epirus raised a 1000 man. They were crushed and ineffectual as before. It was a desperate effort i've seen before. The massacre was... almost amusing.

It is now december, 480 AVC and a dog that humped a high priest's leg caused him to see an omen in it. How amusing. It seems this has caused Assistance of Aphrodite to be upon us. From what i hear, the birthrates will be going up as many have followed the Priest's advise and indulged in the pleasures of the flesh. I do not mind at all as Sparta needs new citizens to fight for it's glory. Besides Sparta is happy and pleased with the recent successes of it's general and we have little doubt that we will vanquish the Triumvirate of Greek States.

The new year is well under way and an emissary of Illyria has come to my court. He wishes for an alliance.
Despite the relative size and power of Illyria, Sparta does not ally with savages! When the time comes they will be crushed underfoot as that is the fate awaiting all barbarians. For we fight to unify and protect Hellas. This goal is not accomplished by allowing brutish smelly oafs to wage war on noble Greeks unopposed! I refused him bluntly and returned to matters of state.

The Achaean League ended up attacking Sparta... and being attacked themselves by rebellious slaves.
But Leonippus Theronid arrived in a hurry and smashed the Aetolian League's forces in sight of Spartan walls. After his crushing victory, i joined my general to dine with him and we discussed what to do next.
Having lost only 90 Spartans and killed well over a 1000 enemies, the General would march to the League's territory and claim it for Sparta. With that front silenced, he could return to Epirus before it had collected an army remotely capable of withstanding our superior soldiers.

After dining with the King i marched to the Achaean League's territory and faced it's army as it had fled back there. Crushing the still feeble Aechaeans, the siege began. The Aetolian army was still out there but I planned to force them to submit. Beginning to besiege the city, it fell by August, 481 AVC.
However meanwhile a negligeable army out of Magna Graecia had landed and conquered Thessaly. I was told that the emissary sent to my King foolishly tried to bluff. Demanding Thessaly and 21 gold of us. Clearly the fool never negociated with Spartans before. Had the King not restrained himself, he'd have let the Elite Guard throw the fool into the pit of no return! Regardlessly, i had to react and marched to Thessaly. A reckoning was coming, Sparta would not leave it's honor blemished at the hands of effeminate Greeks who trembled before Romans. If Romans were beyond their might, let us see how they squeel at the sight of Spartan warriors!

In the next battle at Argolis, we faced a desperately merged force of troops of Epirus and Magna Graecia.
The outcome was never truly in doubt. My men could practically SMELL their fear. For truly we had begun to forge a reputation fo invincibility. The enemy attacked but using additional lines of Hoplites and playing things defensively, i allowed the enemy to beat itself into exhaustion against the shieldwall while the enemy was weakened by archerfire. Keypoints rendered weak, i ordered a full advance. Enemy morale broke and victory was mine!
DefeatingTheDuo.jpg

The crushing victory finished the war in effect. With the Achaean League annexed and Epirus and Magna Graecia without anything afield we faced at most a 1000 men for each if the time came.

September, 481 AVC

I do not know what is going on with the diplomats of the enemy but Epirus must be mad if they believe i'll surrender and pay them 23 Gold!?
The messenger fled the palace after throwing the paper before me, knowing all too well what he risked.
I ordered General Leonnipus to finish things. I have grown tired of these fools trying to stall us with pathetic attempts to defeat us. So far they have never truly been a threat to us despite uniting against Sparta. Thessaly will soon be liberated and than only Epirus remains. Feeble and with an ineffectual military power if any at all, it faces siege and destruction.

October, 481 AVC

Epirus squashed a lingering force of 1000 soldiers out of Epirus. Overwhelmed they were eradicated at the cost of a surprising 5 men. Though my general assures me they were old and had asked to die a hero's death by rushing forward. The 5 veterans who had already given Sparta many sons died gloriously, disposing of a large multitude of soldiers of Epirus, before succumbing. It was a sight that demoralized the enemy. A brief assault eradicated the 200 men defending the city of Thessaly and the army moved on.
I eagerly await a message that victory is achieved over Epirus.

Epirus returned with a substantial army to face us in Thessaly.
5206 men of Epirus faced us at the Battle of Thessaly, desperate to keep us from reaching Epirus.
4295 died as we simply marched on, scattering them in a single attack. Butchery as we were all intent on ending this pathetic war! 52 out of 7963 Spartans fell. Our exhaustion and wounds mattered not for we knew Epirus was desperate. Youngsters and untrained men had stood before us. Our military might had descended upon them like a hammer upon a bug.
A new messenger has been dispatched to my king. We march to Epirus. And given their military state... i will be surprised if we face more than a few mentally unstable peasants, throwing dung from the walls.

-------------------------

As time went on the siege began. The economic backlash of the war hit poor Eudamidas once more. But as usual he bore the setback with Spartan pride. For what was wealth to Sparta beyond a means to an end? Nothing! By May 482 AVC Epirus fell and by June Epirus submitted to the inevitable. Their full annexation was accepted.

Famous Pyrrhus himself was captured with the Prytanis of Epyrus. The king financially rewarded Leonnipus so that he would not get disgruntled when reassigned. The King prerred not to give too much influence to such a charismatic and powerful man as already he was getting somewhat arrogant by Spartan standards. The men adored him in any case for his almost divine abilities, keen tactical mind and seeming inevitable succesfulness at war.

A period of peace and preparation for future endeavours has come. But the threat of revolt looms. Spartan dominance is almost incontested in Hellas now. Only Macedonia and Illyria form a mild threat still.
But there are other threats out there...

Sparta_map3-1.jpg

Next time... peacetime or wartime? Or a bit of both for our friendly neighbourhood Spartans?

Ha, I think I am rooting for a civil war for the cocky spartans :p

Nice job though, I always have a hard time with OPMs.

EDIT: Wait a second, do I see more conquests...no!!!

and btw, the Selecuids aren't doing that bad, I think they will become a threat soon.

Yep, big time my friend.
I'm hoping to consolidate Hellas soon and build up a LARGE army and a good MP reserve. Because the Seleucids and Rome will be the two factions most likely to mess things up for me. :D
My next goal will be to get some more armed forces gathered. 8-10 Heavy Infantry, 4 archers and 2 (or 4?) cavalry per army. I'll be trying to get 2 rolling.
Than take on Illyria and Macedonia plus the Aetolians if a CB pops up.
When i stopped playing last i was starting to make a small fleet which i need to get Crete from Macedonia.
I hope Rome and the Seleucids will leave me be for now. Because for all the vaunted might of the New Spartans and the quality of their general, they cannot currently wage a war of attrition succesfully.
So i hope Rome and Carthage will end up in a prolonged war and the Seleucids hopefully will get a nice Civil War combined with a conflict with Egypt.

*nods* I'm hoping to gain a CB or so. But yes they're high on the list. I can't afford giving Rome excuses to come waltzing in my garden.

Hmmm a civil war seems close. I wonder wether i should let it unfold and clean house or wether i'd shift positions. If it's still possible that is... .

Tuesday i'll update. Exam tommorow. Yuck.
Anyway i've continued a bit further and i stabilized my realm more or less by sending my army back and forth and almost completely reunited Hellas.
I'm not very comfortable about the Seleucids their progress.
Last time i checked though, Rome and Carthage were duking it out. (Rome was holding but hadn't annexed the nearby islands)
So that's good, more time for me to build up a strong military fist, a fleet and stability.:D

The First Era of Consolidation with the War against the second Triumvirate (483-497 AVC):

In September 483 AVC foreigners flooded court, seeking Asylum. Apparently the leading elite of Pergamon was in need of a safe haven. Naturally the King welcomed them for some of them were competent and useful men and women who would be indebted to Sparta.

Almost the entire era of consolidation knew bribery. Not only our star general Theronid but many governors especially the one in Macedonia and ... required bribes. When possible leading men got a Victory March through one of our towns but it was rare for we were not at war.

Besides the frequent bribery required to keep the more ambitious in line... most unsettling behaviour among Spartan citizens, the Helots were being troublesome once more. Throughout the era several revolts would plague us and each time they would be put down with amazing efficiency. Both newly conquered regions and older ones such as Sparta and Argolis would be plagued by revolts. Some were caused by rebels, some by the already mentioned Helots. The reaction was brutal always.

As an alliance with Macedonia failed to be executed due to political division and a lack of popular support, stability was nonetheless dropped as the lack of a clear diplomatic direction was found unsettling.

March 487 AVC would be a period where a new view was put forth and it would be decided that the Aetolian League should be conquered. The idea appealed to the Spartan mindset but was in itself a longterm goal as waging war against fellow Greeks was always something usually best legitimized. The Spartan aristocracy hoped a cassus belli would be found. It was a longterm objective anyway as the Spartan Monarch made it clear that for now he wanted to put some order in his realm.

By July 487 AVC war with Illyria and Macedonia began. Macedonia's colony was soon taken and Illyria was no match for the reinforced army of Leonnid which counted 16000 men. For by now he had a large contingent of Heavy Cavalry supporting him.

Crete which would seccede from Macedonia was invaded by a small invasion force of 2000 militiamen, reinforced by regiments of hoplites as time went on.

During the war King Archidamus would reject his wife as she bored him. Ugly and old, he found her unsatisfactory and soon after remarried a more appealing woman of the upper class.

By may 491 Crete fell and it became clear that the enemy despite revolts and the need to bribe key men of the Spartan aristocracy, victory would be great. Shortly after the fall of Crete, it surrendered. Not long before Illyra had already surrendered Dalmatae, Dardania, Moesi, Taulanti and Paeonia. Dacia had already been forced into peace though their lands remained unclaimed by choice.

Sparta stood stronger than ever territorially and after the militant intermezzo Spartan society could once more focus on consolidating the peace, raising stability and ensuring the loyalty of it's Elite class through lavish rewards, occassional promotions and the granting of Triumphs if ever possible.

June, 491 AVC would see the continuation of the Spartan policy of guaranteeing all nations around it, ensuring a high likelyhood of a possibly desired Cassus Belli being obtained. After all, Aetolia remained a main objective above all others.
Barbarian invasions and uprisings continued after the war with the second Triumvirate. But victory came easily and it kept the standing troops disciplined and hardened as they forcemarched across Greece to deal swift Spartan justice!

By May, 492 AVC the king divorced yet again due to his wife being deemed old and ugly. It seemed the Spartan monarch was picky and desired to sire even more offspring.

September, 492 AVC had an event take place worth of note as someone had been stealing from the treasury and as Spartan Law is swift and demanding, so it was for the thief. At best he could hope on a grievous wound at worst his death would come.

Than at the age of 61, the visionary King of Sparta passed away:
DeathofArchidamus.jpg

Though limited in his overall abilities, his vision and talent for appointing the right man to the right job, his fortune at having good soldiers and an excellent leader and his boldness and daring had brought Sparta to a level of power it had never had. Archidamus would be remembered by all as Archidamus Phoenix, the King who gave Sparta a second life...

King Eudamidas thus came to power, rival of his own father and of less than admirable talents, this was the man who would have to lead Sparta to further glory or at the least, hold onto what was gained so far:
ANewRuler.jpg

To make matters worse the new ruler's reign was one in a less than pleasant atmosphere as both his wife and Archidamus Phoenix's widow desired to see their young children on the throne. Intrigue would fester in a normally calm and ascetic court.

Luckily by now several technologies were discovered and more would soon follow. It seemed progress in several fields had been made.

General Leonippus Theronid continud his loyal service and crushed rebels and barbarian invaders.
His Spartans had become famed across the known world as the cream of all warriors. His own martial skills and keen tactical mind acknowledged by all. With him as a general and such mighty warriors all seemed possible.
SpartanKing.jpg

Eudamidas was quite like his father it seemed in one regard... in april-may 496 AVC he divorced his wife desiring... you guessed it right... a younger and more beautiful wife!

Throughout this era traderoutes were (re)established and as time went on the Spartan Warmachine was strengthened by the creation fo a secondary army. And both on top would receive additional reinforcements after that. Each army, including the one usually under the command of the famous General Leonippus ended up with 17000 men. 8 Elite Hoplite Regiments, 4 Archer Regiments and this main line supported by four Elite Cavalry units. The second army was led by Pyrus, the famous Greek General and did rather well in putting down several revolts. Sparta easily put down diverse revolts as this era dawned to a close and with two mighty armies and two competent generals in the field, more daring conquests became an option... .

A minor war erupted in between in 496 AVC as a quick assault by the Spartans ended soon after with the full annexation of Illyria and Dacia was forced into a tributary relationship with Sparta. The Illyrian captive, an important aristocrat named Verzo Epidid who had held important positions in the past in Illyrian service was pardoned and allowed to enter the Spartan citizenry as a reward for shown valor. It was a token pardon which had positive effects and had been advised by the entourage of the Spartan king, it would soothen the venom that lingered due to his divorce.
The tribute Dacia was to pay with the treaty in june 497 AVC was 0,096 gold per month. A small fortune for Dacia, negligeable for the Spartan Empire. It was symbollic above all. Previously a hurried peace had been made to allow the war with the Triumvirate to end quickly and easily, this time Sparta had desired more and bothered to demand tribute lest Dacia was prepared to lose territory.
Regardless, Sparta consciously spared the barbaric realm. They would not be a welcome addition and might serve a purpose by being a buffer state in the north.

By September 497 AVC new technology was unlocked and besides the already obtained temples the Spartans would be able to build more advanced systems of defence, irrigation and public space.

With a new king, mightier forces and generals than before, new discoveries and a greater territory than ever, it is clear that Sparta once again stands at a crossroads. However this time the choice will be far more epic. Will it expand to the east... to the west... or to the south? Either way it will face a formidable opponent if not more than one. Macedonia and Aetolia remains unconquered even if they are now irrelevant and Dacia has been overwhelmede by barbarian hordes. A barbarian force heading south, hoping to invade and pillage the Spartan Empire...

The barbarians should be the first target -they will forge the new generation of slaves Sparta needs to fuel its economy.
First re-unite Hellas. Loan Aetolia some money and when they can't repay ... what is gold to a Spartan? Don't leave poor Macedon out in the cold. They're really Greeks you know .. Invite them into the Spartan fold.
Then liberate the Spartans of Tarentum. You'll need a decent sized fleet.
