SPARTENOS~ A Principiliy of Sicily AAR

NapoliBanner.jpg

This AAR will be about the wonderful greek country of Napoli. The settings are Very Hard, and the AI is furious. I swear to not cheat even in debt and am likely to be eliminated in the first 4 decades. This is a personal challenge, also to test out the 1.05 AI

INTRODUCTION

SPARTENOS

It was a bright January day, t'would be cold if not the day was situed in Campania. Sergios Spartenos, Count of Napoli, Knight of Byzantine sat behind a great wood study table. Looking out of his glassed window (such a fashion object never t'was!) he gazed out into his city.

Whilest administrative work would be always heeded, Sergios personally treated his city like an attraction. The neapolitan women crowded the multicoloured markets, the beggers rotted on the streets, the honest craftsmen left to his guild. Napoli was a charming place to live in, more so to rule. But work cried and Spartenos got back to verdicts of merchants and the "church".

However, history's finger had sunk into this moment. A messanger, without knocking burst in. Following him was a imperial purple robed officer, his atitude was haughty and Pauvlo, his bodyguard coldly demanded this intruders presence in his liedge's mansion.

The purple robed man ignored Pauvlo as something unpleasant, hardly worth noticing. Instead he marched to Sergios and bowed in militry fashion.

Sergios faked anger at this entre,
"Why do you march into here if as you own my soul, am I to be arrested? Is this the cause?".

The man would've replied if not had Pauvlo had not stepped infront of the newcomer and drew out his sword. Before Pauvlo made a move, Spartenos roared, "You miserable Italian! You disgusting catholic! How Dare draw thy sword onto a fellow Roman*, even more a Greek! Be gone! Tomorrow if I asypy thy disgusting form, from the stake you will rest!"

Pauvlo fled, the messanger and officer stood shocked, amazed at the strong personality and will a being could muster. It began raining outside, and Sergios turned onto his guest as if the interuption had never happened."Well?"
"I bring to thy news from our devine Emperor, Konstantinos II, he brings a letter for my lord, should I read it?"

Sergios eyes narrowed, it wasn't everyday one got letters from the Emperor. His heart picked up a beat.
"Read it" He ordered, hands letting go of his pen. The officer drew back breath and chest,

"To the count of Napoli:
It has been 5 years since you have been appointed count, or in regional terms, 'governer' of Napoli. Napoli will remain famous in our history as the last true roman stronghold in Italy. Its people are proud greeks and only they repelled both arab and norman, infidel and catholic from its gates. Its amazing that a country which is so catholic, can be so greek.

But it seems Napoli's days are numbered. The Normans claim our last soil, the French are behind them along with the Germans. We are not going to fight Christian brothers over Catholics. But there is a ray of hope. I wish for you to declare inderpendance from Byzantinum, I reconize the peoples wish for soveranty and I godpray don't hope for another Venice, another butchering of ties. The lord wept as Venice, pearl of the ardriatic embraced the barbarians. I want Romans, to have a hope, a 3rd Western empire, one that could rise from Napoli. This is my last letter to you as a liedge, you may choose as god and concious instructs.

His Ever Mighty The Roman Emperor Konstantinos II".

The officer ended but Sergios was quiet. Would he do it? Thoughts raced inside his head, he brought his head away from the scene and looked out of his window. The streets were still bustling with activity, would he leave this city to the Normans? He paused, then his eyes caught the flag pole, the yellow and red flag flapped in the wind. No he couldn't leave this city.
He looked the purple robed officer in the eyes, the young man waited for the answer, Sergios knew what to do.

"Come here, and write what I dictate" Sergios commanded. The officer sat in the chair beside the desk and took out a quil and skin. However, Sergios spot the messanger herded by the officer trying to leave. He lept to his feet and took out his sword, the man tried to run but couldn't stop his count. Sergios gritted his yellow teeth, "You! knave... thy thoughts of leaving our company no? Spread rumors on the streets of Napoli? My blind hatered for the catholic scum, perchance?" The man,
terrified blurted out promises and claims to his honestly and love to his lord.

Suddenly Sergios attitude changed the light of battle and slaughter left his eyes and he muttered, "of course, I have been over reacting, why such hate towards my folk?..." He lasped off, looking white and drained. The purple robed officer remained silent and neutral... he knew Spartenos game too well to bother, had he not sailed from byzantium?
"You may leave" Sergios said suddenly, "may thy spread the truth well, may god look down on you". The grateful servant left, crossing himself and thankful. The large door slammed shut, 2 remained.
"To his most Holy, The Roman Emperor Konstantinos II" Spartenos suddenly and quickly began. His counterpart, constantly vigilent wrote it quickly in greek. "I am deeply proud to be considered important enough to be touched by the emperors gaze. I am filled with pride hearing that the brave resistance of my people has reached constantinople's ears. For 4 years I have fought Italian and Arab, refusing to let them take an mile of my Emperors territory, I pledge to continue the struggle of the Greek and keep Roman inderpendance. Sadly nether me or even thy incredible rule will see the rebirth of the Western Empire, but by the gods, it will come. And Christ will be proud indeed when both East and West unite into true Christiandom. I will continue to keep close ties with Byzantinum, and will try to convert Venice back into the fold. It is an indeed historic day for the Roman Empire.
Ever grateful
Sergios Spartenos

The officer finished the writing and rolled it up. He stayed at the desk however, curiousity had overtaken the man. "Now that you are inderpendant, what shall you be?" he asked bravely. Sergios fiddled with the quill, "A small principility off the Italian coast, I suppose" he mocked. The man laughed but didn't smile, it was rare to meet such a man. "And may I ask if your principility needs an general?". Sergios didn't reply,he just reached over the table and grasped the officers hand, he shook it hard. A smile crept up both the mens faces, "And what is thy name?" Sergios asked, "Konstantinos Dukas, my-lord" the officer replied. "And how much experiance have-thy as commander?", "2 years my-lord, fighting the Muslims in Trapazoid". Spartenos reflected quickly, "can I get proof of this?". "No sire, but you can as soon as war permits". Spartenos knew by instinct that he had found his man, he quickly took out his seal. He jotted down a quick note, handing it to young Dukas. "give this to my steward, he will sort you out" he paused, "and give this note to him to sort that... nosy messanger".

*The Byzantines considered themselves the true Romans. As this is between Greeks they will refer to themselves as Romans.

sergiosiminiportrait0ub.png

Count Of Napoli. Born in 1025, 4th son of the Spartenos family of Crete. Although a recent family they were energetic and were in part responsible for the recovery of Cyprus from the infidel. Spartenos left to Napoli when he was 14 years old in order to serve as a square to the noble Epidos Criptos. Noted for his scheming and modesty, no one knows how religious he is.

MICHAL DUKAS
michaldukasiminiportrait0rd.png

Emperor of Byzantium, was a boy when Venice revolted. He wishes to stabilize the empire and preserve the orthadox faith. He has a violent temper but controls it well. Despises Germany as the unsurper of the Roman Empire.

ROBERT HAUTEVILLE
rogerdehautevilleiminiportrait.png

Duke of Apulia. Wise, just and cruel. Duke Robert fought infidel and orthadox in south Italy offically hoping to "purge" the cauldron of Italy. He and the 2nd branch of the Norman smashed into the battleground of Orthadoxy and Islam, they overturned the powerscales annexing Byzantium and Arab territory. Robert is slowly extending his reach to the Lombard minors and the last Orthadox stronghold, Napoli. He has been successful with both Capua, marrying a hautville to the count Richard of Aversa and marrying nobles in Napoli.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

THE RISE OF SERGIOS

Sergios for weakness in ability was for sure an expert politicion. Starting his career as an byzantine knight for the Count of Napoli he gained the Counts favours rumored in more then one way . However unlike many of the other young boys in the counts favour, he used his head. He constructed a power base in the Counts family although he didn't marry one of his many daughters. He displayed a head for numbers, so well that he became the counts cheif advisor. It seemed to many that he would be granted succession.

He soon learned of the Counts plans to give inheritance not to him, but to the counts younger brother. He quickly snapped his connections to the family and rose instead to predominance with the burgers, the minor nobility and soon enough with the peasantry. It seemed to them that he was genually interested in their welfare and he grew popular with the lower classes. His first sign of strengh was when he reformed the militry to give status by merit, not by class. This "Clensing" proved useful as the new skilled officers and generals would not only save Napoli from the infidel, but fill the militry with his supporters.

Soon the old count died, his younger brother would've succeeded him if Sergios had not closed his power trap. He sent the army to capture the potentional count, he murdered and exiled his family in secret. Many of his former supporters disaproved of his murderous ways and rebelled starting a civil war. It was at this Sergios made a political masterpiece.

He presented the war as a war against the opressive nobilty and aristocracy. His zealous troops quickly grabbed hold of Napoli and declared a "republic". Like a thunderbolt his soldiers spread out from Napoli and controled the neighbooring countryside. He captured all his opponents estates looting their wealth. Whilest most of the nobility escaped to Norman Benevento, ones left behind became scapegoats, popularly tried and beheaded by longsword. The civil war had lasted for 3 months but by the end Sergios was still shakely in power.

However Sergios's problems hadn't deflated, The Apulian's, eager for territory and with former nobles of Napoli ploted war. They declared Sergios a heritic and a dirty unsurper, however they couldn't convince much reconizion. The Lombard counties of Capua and Salerno, not wishing for further leaps of Norman adventurizm kept an uneasy neutrality and even Robert de Hautvilles grandest speeches couldn't stop the Lombards from restraining themselves.

Sergios needed allies, he first attempted to woo the great republics of Venice and Genova for much needed protection. He did so by turning Napoli to an electorite system and granting more freedom to the peasants. Despite their joyful republican overtones, it soon became clear that the Italian republics were not interested in any cooperation besides Napolian annexation. The door to conquest lay wide open to the ever agressive Normans. It was in the Autumn of 1060 that Sergios recieved a letter from the Byzantinum emperor Konstantinos, he offered re-admision into the Byzantine empire and a complete pardon. Spartenos himself, realizing his de-stabile region was under danger, traveled secretly to constantinople to sign the deal.

As Napoli myths claim, Sergios was on the docks of Constantinople swearing loyalty to the emperor when he recieved news Napoli was under seige. The Normans had attacked during his stay, surronding the city, the garision concentrated inside the city, trapped. When hearing of this the Emperor just narrowed his eyebrows, as if regreting his decision. The emperor had his revenge however, on the last clause he forced Sergios to rebecome a knight of byzantium, binding him closer to byzantium. Revenge complete, he sent messangers to declare the realms of Napoli under Roman protection. Sergios was ordered to remain silent about his new found knowledge. He returned to his country under virtual arrest of 2000 byzantinium troops, he had learned the hard way who his new master was.

The Apulian response, once so haughty and almighty transformed overnight. The Norman lords debated furiously between themselves, their position had changed, no longer was Napoli a target, it was an springboard for byzantinum domination. Sergios Spartenos met Robert Hautville as an equal at his villa in Apulia and they made white peace. Sergios although now not supreme, was high.

Count Of Napoli. Born in 1925

Our dear Sergios is a timetraveller is he ? :)

He did so by turning Napoli to an electorite system

A single province count, using elective law, that is dangerous ;) You might suddenly get a random courtier with high martial score and he will be your first heir and 'poof' you die and it is 'game over'

Or how are you going to prevent that from happening ?

never happened ;)

Elective law is the defult for Napoli, obviously I will move to something more...secure.

For solving confusion the intro is a the first crusader kings game I played in version 1.0 where Napoli is a vassal of the byzanine empire. I declared inderpendance and elective law and suddenly the Apulians attack us, I make peace with Byzantines quickly and they offer revassalization. I liked the game so much I added it to the introduction. And makes sense to why it is inderpendant and elective law.

I ought of mentioned this :p

It's tough getting out from under the Byzantine thumb.

CHAPTER 2: The rising sun

~-=::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::=-~

"And my lords, it is Gods will that a second Napoli republic spring!". Everything to the moment had been spent for that moment. The Nobles, Burgers and town assemblities went wild. Cheering could be heard all over the chamber, Sergios was popular with the masses. He continued, brows tight, "The nobles families of Napoli will vote for the most worthy canditate next holy day. The canditate to uphold power".

The joy calmed quickly, many's milk had been spoiled. No popular voting, voting for a person who controlled all the strings. It was obvious what direction this moved to.

"Before this however, they'll be an execution measure that needs popular backing.", Spartenos cried, amid growing mutter in the audience, the rows resumed silence. "This execution in general is of Sergios Spartenos, who betrayed noble law to liberate Naples twice from Byzantine clutches, who devoted his life to his country and unlike most, its people." he paused, like an smith measuring melten iron, "should we execute him?".

A roar cried from the crowd, he spoke the truth. Class became a worthless article as the country lined up behind him. On Sunday he was elected count for life by the nobles. They were of course controled by him, any fishmonger on the streets knew that, but Sergios couldn't of got so far without popular backing. When the word Sergios was heard on the street, good or bad it was always animated and serious. Sergios was one of the only things people knew about apart from god, like a father, always trusted.

Sergios, in power again after years of restrain launched himself with ambition. His first major impact was his tree planting scheme, this was meant to mirror the successful pig raising and wood increases of the Normans. Sergios during the implantemation was content to let the council, manage the economy. Instead Sergios focused on the violent game of intrege and power-gaining in the medieval world.

The prime consern of Sergios during 1066-70 was the Apulian threat. The Normans had encroched to a dominant position in lower Italy. Sergios despite sending diplomats to Salerno and Cupula found, that they respected the Catholic Normans more then the Orthadox Neopolitans. Even more so, Salerno was to be inherited by an Norman youth, only Capula remained free of the Norman grasp.
1066worldmap7xv.png

Napoli remained a joke compared to the big boys

In 1067 to much acclaim, Sergios arranged his adopted son to take a place of power at court. to many Sergios was giving crisp ideas of his successor. His son, having turned 16 was decided prime also for marriage. However Sergios in protest for the impossiblity of marrying an byzaninum princess and at the Apulian marriage monopoly. Cretan courter, Euphrosyne Hierakes was selected because of her Stewardship and because she was young and fertile. They needed wait 2 years to meet however until she turned 16.

sergiosisuccessors10766lq.png

Sergios, sucessor will be a Spartenos!

During the marriage, a loose comment by an Apulian lady on Count Sergios right to decide his sons marriage, after he himself had remained unmarried and suspected of homosexuality sparked a fierce behind-the-scenes battle. This brought on as well Konstantinos, who was accused by an rival marshall of vieing for Count Sergios favours and thus inferor to him in skill. This potentional scandal Sergios took extremely seriously, and exiled the accuser, this instead intensified the callings. Sergios was accused with sleeping with catholic hores, militry commanders, some imaganary. Sergios decided to back down, but in his own unique way.

He declared his intention one morning of suddenly marrying, Suhiaila of Sirkat. It took over a week to find out who this woman was, and the result shocked the people. Although she was a orthodox as suspected, she was far from a Italian or greek, she was Nubian. At first people a few dared to joke, but Sergios insisted his deep love, messages to and from the kingdom of Nubia were sent and a marriage was arraged. They had never seen each other, but Sergios was content. There was virtually no chance of seeing her, and he was freed from the scandals. However little did he know the Nubians had sent a royal entourge with her towards Cario.

Dhow.jpg

An arab Dhow

She arrived in 1070 in an arab dhow, despite her arab appearances she was enthusiasticly cried at the new harbour that had been built. Sergios was suprised with her arrival, but quickly met her and the new couple left. She was 43 and he 45. Their marriage seemed stable and Sergios increased his prestige & Coffers largely. It has been suggested that Suhaila was assisinated by Sergios, who thought of her not as an wife, but as an tribute extractor and increasingly nagging. Napoli history offically credits Sergios and Konstantinos equally for her murder, happening in may 1071. This is because only Sergios had access to her chambers and Konstantinos remained an vigerous opponent of her.

The public morned her death from falling down the stairs. Sergios was pitied by the locals. Sergios played the broken man, building the Sinkat spiral chuch in 1072. However during the political scandals of his early rule, Sergios remained increasingly aware of the growing rift between Byzantinum and the growth of Apulian power. In 1074, Sergios was presented with an "Census" from his spymaster which numbered the Apulian armies 7 times more numerous then the Napolian armies. He needed to remove the Apulain threat fast. He did so by inviting Robert Hautville to sign an alliance. The reply came a month later, Robert ACCEPTED! the peoples although allied remained quite distant.

Napoli layed low during 74-76, Sergios married an serbian princess to gain more prestige in 1073. Sergios still had no children apart from his son, although his son was rated his next successor. Sergios intercourt marriages had produced plenty potentional rivals. Fortunately his son enjoyed women more and had 2 boys. He irked his son by planning their futures, Bastillos would be married to the Torchillo family of upper Sardina, this could provide a chance for a claim at the gem. His daughter would marry a prince of some large and prestigous kingdom.

Naploi, the city grew as Sergios infastructure drive payed off well. An income of 6 was very well off for an count. His prestige reached 600 in 1076, his treasary numbered one hundred gold. He would need it, for tensions had resparked following the Apulian breaking of the alliance, Napoli remembered Apulia was no friend and Sergios realized that in order to survive his power needed to be increased. The two lombard republics were virtually the only suitable targets. Salerno although plump, claimed and needed for prince of Campania, was well defended as well as allied to a sicilian sheik. This left Capua, which although barely weaker and useless for a higher title

PrinceofCAM.jpg

If only Apulia didn't have interest in Salerno...

THE CAPUAN WAR

After manufactoring an plausible claim to the countie, Spartenos ordered his armies to enter Capua. Napoli declared war on August the third, 1077. The army was commanded by General Theoplylaktos, an able but and trustworthy general. The battle of Capua ended with the complete aniliation of the Capuan army. In just 1 month, Sergios entered the famous Capuan mountain monanstaries, converting the largest to Orthadoxy.

However, Sergios didn't rule supreme. When he ordered Theoplyalktos to return to Napoli, he refused. Instead in a show of arogence, Theoplyaktos declared himself count of Capua and refused repeative requests to hand over the title to Sergios (as the head of the republic). Sergios got increasingly fustrated. Byzaninum meanwhile, wondered about the supposive unity Sergios promised. "The man is a final piece of dung for the land that cost us so much" Emperor Michal famously declared. The tension between the defacto vassal and Sergios climaxed with the Cupuan declaration of inderpendance. Sergios instantly declared war, and asked for Apulian intervention. Apulia was happy to decline however, feeling no wish for Napolitian success. Sergios had just re-sent his army when an messenger came declaring byzantine protection over Capua! As Sergios wrote in his diary, "How the fates have changed!".

THE 8 DAYS WAR

Sergios, being a realist knew that you don't want an enemy 200 times stronger then you. Fortunately only cyprus from Byzantine declared war along. The nobles knew however that Byzantine could set the orthadox world against Napoli at its whim. Was Napoli to beg near Byzantines feet? Yes it seemed so. Sergios swiftly sent his nearest friend, an byzantine envoy with a proposal of "White peace" with the combatants. Napoli would abandon Capua to byzantine, for the hope of peace.

The peace treaty was signed by the byzantines, and Capua ended its status of war on 1077 6th of december. Sergios wife, pregent for 2 months, died from childsbirth 2 weeks later For many, the triamphant Western Empire Sergios seemed to be making had evapourated. Sergios vowed to get revenge.

Count of Ragusa is always yellow. It isn't Apulian :)

Nice AAR

Things don't seem to want to go Sergios' way. He loses Capua, twice. His new wife is murdered. His son hates him meddling in his marriage. At least the Apulians said yes to the alliance.

3: Revenge is sweet

This chapter is half/half. The storyline may be a bit strong... if so skip it to +----+ barrier

CHARACTERS IN CHAPTER:

Eudokia Makrembolites
EudokiaMakrembolites.jpg

Born in 1930, mother of the Emperor. Witty and although holding no political power in constaninople, holds favour of the court.
~-=::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::=-~

Sergios looked into his reflection in the water. An start of an white and prickly beard looked back. "Yes", he thought "I am going to die soon". "What will my people remember me as?" he ventured. "As a traitor or patriot? An villain or just ruler? An victor or an loser?". He wandered the court gardens followed by his bodyguard.

They had grown used to the puzzled actions of the old man. He was considered to be insane, it had been 1 month since Capua had declared independence. Nothing spectacular happened, the only notable feature was his all day praying on the new year. He repented his crimes to a common priest, believing that he was equal to his "dirty catholic people".

The crimes amounted quite large from killing his own wife to false claims onto Capua. The priest was ordered to silence, so fortunately a political scandal didn't form. Anyway, it was quickly becoming that Spartenos was politically dead.

The guards watched Spartenos dip his bare soles into the water. "Sire!" they called, "Don't stray too far!". It was at this moment Sergios seemed to awake from his endless rantings. "You fools!, bastards! parenting your ruler!". His face was red with rage and despite being bare-foot Sergios clambered off the riverbank, the stones made his feet bleed but he didn't care. He was angered, they sniggered slightly. Sergios gave them a look of stone, a fish's stare, he slowly took out his sword. They, despite outnumbering him by 6 each felt they faced an army. Here was no ordinary mortal, a saint? They were scared, terrified. His steps left a red trail, their knees trembled.

they fell one by one to their knees as their ruler looked each of them in the eye, sword in hand. They remained silent, the silence remained one of domination. It trailed for minutes, finally one guard had enough. "Sire, you are bleeding crinsom. Let us escort you bac..", a sword at throat interrupted him. "Then clean up the blood before leaving, you swine." he pointed to the trail. "I want to see all this blood cleaned up stainless from the grass in 5 minutes, you may only use your tongue. If I don't see it spotless I will impale you, you may invite your friends", he dropped the quivering man, kicking him to start him up.

The man, was horrified, but started licking the grass in clumps, painting his tongue red. Progress was slow however, moving on his knees. After the first minute 3 of his friends joined him on the grass, the progress sped up. Soon all 6 licked up his blood up to his dripping feet. "Damn the blood" Sergios ordered. They licked the wounds on his feet, pathetically coating the wounds with Saliva.

After the fifth minute Sergios ordered them to stop. The faced their lord faces dripping with blood. Sergios remained unmoving for half a minute and then declared, face tight and white. "I have committed crimes and I am old. However I will not die before seeing my enemies punished. Are-thy my enemies?"

His guards, in one voice moaned "No, sire". "That is good", Spartenos smiled, now lets go to my chambers.
+-----------------------------------------------------------+
Sergios came back onto the Napoli power scene like a comet. Refilling the power vacuum reserved by his son, growing in ambition and confidence. He had a talk behind closed doors to his son, bringing him into line. The ease he dispelled the republic, naturally fractious shocked the nobles. Talk came of him being possessed with demonic energy, this led to the pricking of the popes ears. Only the thought of an second defeat at the Norman hands deterred them.

Sergios during the spring remained in his diplomatic circles virtually constantly. The general populace, although disappointed at his failure of expansion understood him very well. They, felt anger to Byzantine, ruiner of their hopes. This was spurred on by Spartenoses speeches, despite them being of different religions, both were united in hatred of Byzantium. Everyone expected Sergios to create an tidal-wave of an event.

ThePlan.jpg

??????!

The event came on the third of June, 1080, Sergios declared his intentions of marrying Eudokia Makrembolites, the mother of the emperor of Byzantine. Whilst the people flocked to Sergios quarters to show their support, the people in Byzantium were shocked. a lowly count, recently at war with them, husband to the mother of the divine*! It would of been doomed to failure if not for Konstantinos, who was son of Eudokia.

He traveled in great secrecy to Constantinople, avoiding the forces of his sister (spy master of Byzantium). He arrived to his mothers quarters, he appealed to her to marry Sergios. Napoli myths claim that he appealed to her based on the fact he was the most unloved of her children because he was the youngest. Fact however, suggests she disliked being the virtual prisoner of her son and wished for independence.

Nether less, primitive or successful. The argument won her over. During the month she lobbied to marry Sergios. At first, Nobles around the kingdom cried 'Traitor' at the thought. However being a woman she transformed this into a jest, sending love letters despite being only 5 years younger then he. When asked to comment on this in court, she declared that "love for the elderly is higher then the youth" sparking laughter. Her sons, lisped response barely helped the situation. Even the thoughts of her past husband evaporated as she ridiculed her son, the emperor.

The emperor weathered the laughter, cursing his brother and hoping the situation would die out. Destiny apparently enjoyed the humor, and to his great dismay Sergios appeared cheerfully on the docks on Constantinople courting his mother. Sergios was sure to spend as much time as possible with his future son in law as with his future wife as he commented to him on her beauty and subtly her traits in the bed despite being as rumored, 46 years old.

Dukas, could take no more of this pressure and sarcasm. He had more important things such as negotiating an alliance with Germania. He finally agreed to the marriage, strangely considering the vast amount of criticism it first invoked, the marriage was very eventful, and popular. It raised Sergios prestige up considerably, but the largest surprise was the heavy duty of 613 gold pieces from the emperor to his "dear father-in-law".

The couple were greeted in Napoli with exclaim and even more importantly, triumph. Thousands of people prayed in their strange catholic way, although Eudokia was quite irked. However she was much more loved then even Suhiaila of Sirkat. She commanded respect and had much more personality then Sergios dull Serbian wife. Revenge had been complete on Byzantium, and the people felt god was once with Napoli.

Another lightning both from heaven hit on October, Piza declared war on Capua! Byzantinum, grudgingly joined its vassal but remained dedicated to doing nothing. Capuas army faced the vengence of Piza.

THE PISAMESE-CAPUAN WAR

CapuaVpiza.jpg

However, none of these sides really expected each other to do the nasty work. The Capuans appealed to the Byzantines, as they were part of their dirty realm. The Pisamese were part of the kingdom of Germany and thus appealed to their guardians. It seemed that WW1 would happen at any moment.

17fe8411.jpg

The Pisamese's secret weapon.

9a14715f.jpg

Due to Byzantine being allied with Germany both sides didn't go to war with each other... whilst Byzantine went to war against Pisa... even though its part of Germany... I suppose its because Pisa is counted as an kingdom inside an kingdom.

Well the first blow was delt by pisanese. In an brilliant move they sent an army numbering 1000 men, in winter, to the mountains of Capua. The Capuans fought well, although outnumbered and aided with general snow. reduced the enemy to 180 men. The Pisanese seige, slow and wasteful, streamed through spring making little progress. In July the Capuans counter-attacked with an equaly weak army. The superior generalship proved the winning factor and the Capuans ended with 20 men alive. Meanwhile the Napapolitan armies swelled to two thousand...

Damn that Sergios is an evil son of a gun. Making them lick the blood of the grass? He likes his power.

But it sounds like you have a mess on your hands with the war. Just the 20 men left? Yikes!

The abandoning.

The governer of Genoa, he is known for his extremely well built spy network and incurable lust. He is devoted to the reich.

----------------------------

Sergios reviewed his troops. The army had been ordered to be on their best behavior, ranks and ranks of Italians and Greeks lay in front of him. "2 thousand men sire, a duchies army" Konstantinos told him passionately. Sergios smiled, it wasn't the numbers that intreged him, but the low amount of peasant soldiers.Even more so almost 400 knights, some even deflectors from Rome. An real first class army, in addition to have been made by his son.

Sergios son, Sergios "Junior" at 26 was what could be considered an "perfect" son. He had 3 children, modest, deeply religious and the best general in the kingdom, even surpassing Konstantinos. In his father, Napolis saw an clever vulture, in Sergios JR they saw an bull-dog. He had not much of an personality but he was well liked by the masses.

Napolis saw an clever vulture, in Sergios JR they saw an bull-dog

Sergios during the Pisamese-Capuan war had been quite silent. Instead the talk of the court was the death of the North Sardinan counts son, he now had only daughters. The idea was to marry an Spartenos to his eldest daughter to inherit the kingdom. It was decided to marry Sergios JR son, bastillos to her after she turned 16.
Napoli, scared of either German or Byzantine participation, stayed stricted neutral in the war. Both Sergios and the nobles agreed that Napoli should continue rebuilding her armies instead. What Napoli needed was peace and for a while it seemed it would have peace.

THE SALERNO CRISIS

On the 16th of october, whilst Sergios was in mass with his son, a messanger arrived telling of the death of the populist count of Salerno, Rudolf Of Salerno. It wasn't the death itself that sent an shiver through Sergios spine, but the fact of an Norman successor to the countie, incorporating it into the Apulian Duchery. He had feared it for a while but here was reality staring him in the face. Napoli was being encircled.

The next day, Sergios, his son and 8 trusted courters met and discussed the future of Napoli seriously. Whatever their expections, all were shocked by Spartenos sudden frankness. He was old, the army was small and the economy was weak. Whilst their opponents were strong and rich. The others stayed stone silent during the confessions, avoiding Sergios active eyes.

"What shall we do against such people!" Sergios shouted eyes flashing, "They are energetic, valourus and ambitious. There are times I think of joining them as an vassal to avoid the certain bloodshed that will come between us. We are a prune compared to them, an sore on their perfect South Italy. You lords know what they did to anything that stood on their path, they annexed them, simply and quickly. Just picture this, Greek, Orthadox peoples rejoiced at the thought of annexion by them, picture what our
Catholic breatherian would do?!?!". All continued their muteness, after a moment when it became apparent Sergios was waiting for their answers, the bishop of Naples vecured an reply.

"My lord, our country may be small and not share our love for the rightous religion, but they are no friends of the Apulains or enemies of your grace". The man paused aburptly, preoccuping himself in wiping sweat from his temples. In reply Sergios expertly raised an eyebrow whilst nodding his head in encourgement to continue. "What I think he is suggesting father" Sergios JR calmly lay his large hand on the frail mans shoulder, "is that Neapolians loyalties lie, not in their faith but in their ruler?" The bishop nodded, he was around the same age as Spartenos elder.

Sergios paused thinking, "men, after I die I frankly fear for my realm", he spat on the ground, "Son, whilst your Marshalling abilities are unequaled in this countie, what of the outer world. Robert de Hautville is more then your equal in the militry realm", he looked at each man, "believe me, the only road open to Napoli is to rapidly expand and match Hautville in his own game, its because of this, I have declared war on Capua for the third time".

THE THIRD CAPUAN WAR

The Napolian army, had much recovered in numbers. At the beginning of the war it outnumbered the Capuans 100 to 1. An easy annexation was forseen by many, troops looked forward to returning triamphant by Christmas. Sergios ordered his son to lead the expedition, he held the trust of many. Their last enemy was going to be punished.

On the 27th of october Sergios JR, marching at an steady pace, recieved an incredious dispatch. The Apulains had joined the Neapolitians in "punishing" Capua, dispite Napolis pleas that it was strong enough. Hautville, had played the Napolians like putty in his hands, he had done nothing but expand and watch his enemies fight. Now he hoped to completely encircle the "greek filth".

Sergios JR made with all haste towards Capua, brushing aside their minicule army and besieging the city. The progress proceeded rapidly, meanwhile the Normans gathered their forces in Apulia. They left on the 12 of November, Prepared to take over the siege, Robert de hautville travelled with the army ready to outclass the silly little count. On news the Napolians redoubled their efforts, thankful that Robert would have to pass through mountains. Finally on the 20th Theophylaktos gave up all hope of an byzantine rescue. his troops rather than starve personaly surrendered to Napoli. That day, Sergios JR paraded through the streets of Capua he gave an eleborate speech declaring Capua would be "Ever part of the Napolian republic". Much enthuisasm was given on the fact that they could vote for their 'lord-governers'. Robert de hautville was warmly greeted with hundreds of bright yellow and Red banners. He left in disgust.

In Napoli, elder Sergios declared an national holiday, thousands lined the streets of Napoli. Food was distribtuted, ale was consumed. Sergios, normally reserved mingled with the elders. more rejoicing ensued, as peace was made with an uninterested Byzantinum. It had too busy in its incrediblely successful war against the Serbians to save its doomed vassal.

THE DICE

After this tense adventure, Sergios felt it easy to relax and let the republic run itself. He had already introduced his son with the important people, secured him in power, and won the love of the Neapolitans. He knew his time had been prolongued as he sat by himself in his very same study, he had just finished writing his memoirs. As truthly as was politically correct.

Suddenly an messanger burst in, "My lord, forgive the interuption but the republic of Genoa has declared was on us!". Sergios, blinked. "So... we are at war again?...", He sank into his chair, wedging his burning head in the pillows. "did Germany, its suzerian?" he groaned, knowing the answer. "No sire, it remained neutral", like an rabbit coming out of its hole Sergios looked in disbelief. This medieval game was confusing indeed.

He met his son in the assembly, crowds and crowds of confused and frustrated Neapolitans waited outside. Were they going to back down again?, That was the question on every soul's lips. Sergios made no comment, from his carriage he chatted to his son and his beloved Konstantinos. The assembly in all honesty had little idea on the militry power of Genoa, Sergios putting on a brave face at worst was flushed. "We shall meet the Genoese on our soil" he declared, despite the systematic applause, an wave of tension lay in the air.

Sergios, obviously wished to diffuse the war as quick as possible. His first extremely generious offer of all the coffors was rejected, the tone of demands was set. The Genoese were going for territory. From his private circles he knew that Genoa only had an claim to Capua, thus most people thought an land invasion was likely. However Sergios thought an Naval expedition would be taken due to quicker speed. It was agreed thus to let all reserves grow and train until the genonese force came into view.

On the 17nd of May, an french dispatch told an shocked assembly that the Apulians have joined the war on Napolis side. Sergios loudly congratulated the Apulians for such "Valour", in private however he discussed the reasons they did so. It was decided that the Apulians declared war, not to help Napoli, but to prevent an potentional rival from expanding. It was well known the Normans and Germans didn't exactly see eye to eye, "it is an fear of the bear, that made the wolf protect the lamb" Sergios famously declared.

It took the enemy forces over an month to reach Napoli. During this time it became increasing obvious the Apulians weren't going to lift an finger if Napoli got attacked. The Apulians to show their immense support mobiled their Sicilian regiments, making it clear it would take months to reach mainland. The irony was literaly killing Sergios, he was too old for this, but still the ambition to be remembered favourablity rackled his mind. He increased the taxes of all classes, mentioning it was temperory.

The Geneose forces were spotted by advanced scouts in Roma. Sergios prayed the reports were overexagurated, according to spies the Genose numbered 7 thousand men strong. The only thing that would save the Napolian-Capulian armies, numbering 3 thousand, would be the Apulians. Two plans were drawn up, one was to surrender Capua to the enemy and lure them towards Apulian terriory, forcing the reluctant hand. However this wasn't very likely and if the enemy marched to Napoli, Spartenos could be ousted from power like an fly. The second was to fight them on the Caupan native mountains, they were outnumbered by more then 2. Sergios thought long and hard, finally he decided to engage the approaching army in Capua. Something had convinced him that the Genoese wouldn't rise to the bait and that an long fight would content the Geneose at most to demand only Capua.

The 2 forces met on the outskirts of Capua on June the 20th, 4PM. The Capuan and Neapolitian armies had in the nick of time merged together on the 17th, the combined armies were commanded by Sergios JR. The futile hope that the Geneose would be detered by the mountains and hills was put to rest, the Genose stormed the frontline and although slowed, surged like an wave . Only the Neapolitian advantage of knights held the weak line. Suddenly after 8 hours of attack and counter attack on the bloodstained hills, the Genose broke the Neapolitain centre. Sergios watched helpless as the Geneose Miliza encircled the 2 flanks through the centre. They completely crushed the resistance as fear overtook the ranks. Sergios on his horse, barely escaped as the remaining troops were being slaughtered.

Napoli lay at Genose mercy

He fled to Napoli, lying on his knees in front of his father begging for forgiveness. Sergios elder, confined to the bed as he lay dieing had still much to do. He dictated an peace to Konstantinos, offering all the coffors and Capua. The dispatch was duplicated and sent both to the enemy marshall and Genoa.

Sergios last hours are suprisingly, very well documented. This is mainly because his son recorded it in his fathers uncomplete memoirs. He offered thankfulness to god for letting him live so long and letting him taste power. He then wished his son gods blessings and asked him if he would remain orthadox, after being reassured he thanked his son and admitted he would be a better ruler then he. "You start on a clean sheet, don't dirty it", he croaked.

Sergios wished to die Orthodox style, despite being much more lukewarm to Catholicism then before. He was carried, on a litter by 4 trusted men, his wife following behind. He died in front of chanting priests and family, praying for a future for Napoli. The streets of Napoli were silent as many packed into and around the church to catch an glimpse of his cold corpse. Many had died under his reign, but many had tasted victory and love for him. The only thing that was not confused was the distinct gloom that hung over the city, mourning at the death of their ruler. On July 10th, the Genoese accepted peace with Napoli at the cost of Capua, from the despairing Neapolitain mind it was extremely generous and accepted instantly.

------------------------------------------

Robert de Hautville recieved the messager after his 2 hour breakfast. The messanger had waited all this time wondering how to get the maximum impact of his news. "Sire!" he declared, continuing in the same breath "Napoli has surrendered to Genoa. Napolis armies are torn, Genoas are weakened. We have all our troops in position. Your marshall and Cousin asks for permision to invade. Sire, is it granted."
"It is granted with my blessing", he crossed himself zealously. "may the Capuans and Lombards rightfully live our glorious Duchy."

The two powers faced each again in the blood stained land of Capula. Roberts large advantage of well trained and equiped knights won the day, reducing the large army to 34 men. The Capuans would enjoy great harvests next year as the bodies of Italians and Greeks littered the grounds. After such domination, and fears of an mass looting of Genoa, Genoa surrendered their newly gained possession to Apulia.

Thus ended Napolis hopes to become a land power. The Apulians had wrestled any hope using diplomacy and power, fooling the Neapolitans with an hope of an useful alliance. Napoli lay bleeding under the Apulian boot.

END OF AN ERA, 1081

The AI put up a good show, I was denied any hope for an match of forces in Italy with Apulain containment. I had some really bad luck with the Genoese and Byzantine confusion. Also I made an terrible mistake of not knowing that if an general conquers an enemy province he claims it as his domain.

In other places, the Byzantine AI reconquerored Serbia well and Fortress Denmark took an share of Norway and embarassed Sweden. The Muslims in Spain showed some good resilence and look on the way to making an Muslim spain. Scottland fought Ireland quite successfuly, I will be keeping an eye there.

THE REIGN OF SERGIOS II

Sergios II cordination was on fairly shaky ground. Genoa had anihilated his army, holding his republic at their whim. He was in barely an envious position. However Genoas conquest in Italy had not gone unheard of, Germany, wishing to avoid conflict with Byzantinum decided to presure Genoa to uphold chivalry and press for less territory then Genoa aspired to.

It was such logic that made the 2 republics organise peace after the fall of Capula. Napoli would hand over everything bar Napoli itself to Genoa, Capula would switch hands again, republic to republic. The news was gloomed at in the capital, however the less zealous joyed at been spared seige and looting. After the capulation much political shaping had occured. The "republic" had been revealed as an very long and heavy curtain, shielding the rise of the Spartenos family. With the accenacy of Sergios II even an oligarchy was useless, the Spartenos family had taken complete control of Napoli.

The change was hardly glamerous. Members of the elected parlement were informed that if they opposed Sergios, their famillies would be butchered. With this in mind, the members of the parlement made no resistance to an "shuffle" of members. The most capable of the ex-parlementries were hired by Spartenos as "political servants". The new parlement found that no orders it made were obeyed, instead Sergios political servants held power.

It was obvious that Sergios couldn't of formed such changes, indeed history has learned it was Sergios's spymisteress who created and calculated plots to ruin the republics prestige. Attendment of the members of parlement dropped as their pay was eliminated. All priveledges were removed, and thus in the year of our lord 1081, Sergios declared the Napoli republic abolished and an countie would be set up in its place.

Suprisingly, no revolts occured, the people had accepted that the Spartenos ruled the country. Still it shocked the populance to learn they owed obidence his Grace, Count Sergios II of Napoli. Any potentional successors were, whilst not killed, forced to reconize Spartenos children as his rightful successors. The complex plots had ended, Sergios could now rule without opposition.

Sergios first task was to ask Konstantinos, still Marshal of the realm to rebuild the Neapolitian Army on a different path. Before, as forces for the republic were volunteered and levied, Napoli depended on sheer numbers to beat enemies. Now, the armies would rely on royaly trained knights and heavy infantry. Sergios II had a clear idea of the military he wanted, after witnessing his knights being slaughted by the numerical superority of the Genoese.

-- The golden seal

Meanwhile in the South Italian powerstruggle, Robert de Hautville swiftly finished his uniquely slow mobilisation. He wasted no time, marching onto Genoese Capula. His solders found an army 4/5ths the size of his own, with an disadvantage of knights. The battle, whilst hard fought and desparate, swung over to the Apulians. Genonese loses increased at an ever quickening pace until the 3000 remaining men crumpled and were rode down. Robert captured the hard fought province after a quick weeks agressive seige. The people sighed, whilst they would not get liberty under this man, they would get much needed order and tolerance. Genoa, an now humbled enemy agreed to the incorporation of Capula in the Apulian duchy.

When the news reached him, Sergios took the annexion very serious indeed. His fathers worst fears had been confirmed. They seemed destined to be milled and crushed between the two stones of Roma-Apulia, rumors suggested Hautville wished to capture Napoli to found an "Kingdom of Naples" in south Italy. However to do so he needed more territories, more legimitcy...

Sergios took to the threat of Roma-Apulia extremely well. His first action was to head to the papal states and "compromise with the infidel". Due to the fact that his army was 5 times smaller, Sergios had to wait in the lounge for 5 hours whilst the Pope peaked through a small hole sizing up his opponent. It was only when his holiness concluded that Spartenos had no personalty he allowed Sergios to enter his premises. "You wish to speak to gods servant?" the Pope asked him. "No" replied Sergios politely, "I wish to talk to Theodoric of Roma". "Well kneel son, and we may discuss statemanship", after obidently obeying he ordered all the doors to be shut, whilst the guards remained outside. The brisk tone he displayed set the tone of the conversation and loud arguments arose from the heavy, oak, woodern doors.

After this conversation the following points were made: The papal states had no interest in accepting an greek like Spartenos as a vassal, the Papal states had no interest in the dirty greek lands and that a political marriage would be filthy. Before leaving, Sergios II famously pressed an orthodox cross into the Popes hands, bringing much talk to his eternaly blessed peasants.

The 2nd client, Apulia was a different story. Truth be told Sergios was perfectly happy to bend over to the Duchy and become a vassal. However, the question was an familiy one and Robert de Hautville wished to move his capital to Napoli and create a tasty little county of it. Fortunately Hautville was straight to the point, "no we don't want you to marry any of our family, we don't like your family, and NO we don't want you as a vassal". Sergios of course begged Robert, bringing much amusement to the old man. He promised that he would respect Napolis inderpendance if Sergios crawled through this legs. The results fortunately have been erased from all history books.

Afterwards, Sergios focused inwards immerging himself in statecraft and family. Money was dripping into the coffors, 6 gold ingots per month, To multiply, Sergios invested much money to building projects such as docks and moneyhouses. This mirroring of Venice, (a county in a position close to Napoli) turned to be too hopeful. His policies were laced with corruption so whilst the buildings were completed, the province on total shifted to becoming poor.

CityScreen.jpg

Napoli gained 2 buildings during his reign

Familywise Sergios and his beautiful wife had 5 children (2 boys, 3 girls). His elderst son, Alexios Spartenos was much loved by the populance and unfortunately developed fever at 5 dieing shortly. Basileious, whilst mature could never reach the popular love his brother involked. This is partly due to Sergios would sent him to church as he never expected him to succeed him. His 2 daughters also died but little Maria Spartenos fortunately survived. All for all, Sergios had secured the Spartenos line.

The only stratigical moves were Sergios strange interest in North Sardina were he established relations with the Torchito dynasty. It was obvious to many that Sergios wished to inherit the land of Arborea and whilst he was married, he sent Basileious on trips to their court making relations with the Count of Arboreas daughter. The count of Arborea, gentle and wise sent Sergios a lettre declaring his support for a royal marriage when his child becomes older.
Claim1.jpg

Our only claim...

Sergios died in March, 1089. He was visiting some newly established Nobility, it has been suspected that he was poisoned by one of these but after examination it turned out he had choked on a carp bone.

His early death shocked the county. Despite his peaceful rule (which lasted 8 years) and good intensions, he wasn't loved. This was all too aparent when mainly nobility visited his funeral. Even this was due to his feudalization schemes which had transfered power from all classes of society to his new elite. His economic schemes had forced the province to slip the already low european standards and made the peasants tighten their belts.

But nowdays many regard Sergios as a footnote, an man who brought stability to the land, at the cost of everything bar-inderpendance. He lay the stones for the Spartenos dynasty and whilst not a hero, he definately understood realpolitikic.

Well, Sergios died quite quickly, fortunately his son isn't too bad.

S5-Title.jpg

When Basileios came into power completely un-contested, it was apparent the great laundering process was complete. No cries to restore the republic were made, au-contraire, crowds of Neapolitans whilst staying at home for his father, flocked to greet the new sovereign. The coronation ceremony was largely improvised, due to the unsuspected nature of Sergio's death. Fortunately Basileios made great drama bringing a man from each social pillar: (the peasant, the churchman, the noble and the merchant) and made them declare their support to him and the Spartenos dynasty. Basileios gave his coronation speech from his grandfathers apartments, his loud brass voice declaring "Too long has Napoli played knave!", it was evident from the beginning, Basileios had come to write a page of history.

"The count doesn't visit everyday" Roldopho noted wryly, Konstantinos swiftly told him to shut up. As Marshall of the realm for 3 rulers, Konstaninos had amassed an immense reputation, not just in Napoli but in South Italy. He knew that a visit meant one thing: projects, work, battles, levying... However he felt the army was ready. "Okay Roldopho, recite the latest tally of our troops".

Roldopho unrolled an leather bound scroll,
"We have:
S5-Report.jpg

:)

my lordship, may I remind you that Count Basileios will be here in 20 minutes?". "Fine, I will join him on horseback, Roldopho! My horse!"

Basileios met Konstantinos in his private villa. Konstantinos took a liking to the 20 year old, he was quite young himself (33 years old) and they energetically discussed recent politics, Konstantinos recognized that Basileois resembled his grandfather as they both seemed to enjoy scheming for the pleasure of it. However, Konstaninos could anaylize no more as Basileois was off his seat warmly greeting Konstantinos sister, Zoe Dukas. Konstantinos smiled, they felt like adults to this child however he was impressed Basileois was quick to recognize that Zoe would be playing the role of his diplomat. After supping two, fat cockatrices the rest of Basileois "Servants" arrived, Theodoras Exazenos and Thedoros Arebindos; his Steward and Spy master respectfully. After receiving their bows to him, Basileois rose. The room quickly became silent. "My people, I have been told by my father that long ago, there bad been a meeting". Basileoises voice was soft but penetrated Konstaninos, he had a feeling of what was coming. "behind locked doors, such as today, and in this meeting my grandfather Sergios the founder admitted to his council, 'we are weak, they are strong'".

Basileios suddenly paused and went back to eating his meat. He did so calmly, catlike like he had lost interest in them. The silence built up for a minute or so, everyone knew that Basileios was testing them, but didn't dare to move. "Now I hope I am not alone in believing that the Neapolitans are destined to nilhim unless a measure is found?" Basileios continued, "an measure which will counter-balance us with our two rivals (Roma-Apulia)". The whole table stared, charmed, absorbing every word. "But believe it so, I have this solution it is called this":
S5-Sicily.jpg

Yesiriiiiiii the good old, Sicily trick

It could of been sworn that all the members of the party bar-Spartenos felt their jaw drop... Sicily? wasn't it inhabited with rabid Mohammedans? Sicily was a mighty exotic place, but why? Bastileois answered his captivated audience, "Sicily contains many rich ports, thus contains much gold and Arabic influences", he paused looking into their eyes "however that is not only the reason I am interested, its the fact that Sicily has been under the tyranny of Islam for more then two centuries, it has been separated from its motherland and have become nothing other then slaves for the Arabian Calphinate." Everyone seemed to snap from their trace at this weak Causi Beli, they knew their duties. Konstaninos was the first one to speak, "it shall be done sire, but may I suggest a plan?"
