As this is a hot topic, i decided to create a thread with my little tutorial. Feel free to add any other tips.
How to manage specialized domes - a small tutorial
Let's say i have 5 medium domes. (For the sake of simplicity, each dome has minimum service buildings (2x dinner, med clinic, a small lake, art shop, security (if needed - don't forget to allow security staff in the filter))
One dome has nurseries, schools, universities and a playground. The rest of the place is smart houses/apartments. In this dome i filter out every specialization (with the thumbs down) and prefer non specialized workers (with thumbs up). This way the non specialized workers will come in and train and the dome also takes care of the children in the same way. Recently i allow Medics (i don't use thumbs up or thumbs down for those so that it is not a preference)
In my engineering domes i put factories, fusions, casino and a drinking bar (+ the usual services). The rest is apartments/smart homes and an Arcology (need a lot of living space for engineers). In the filter i forbid all specializations (thumbs down), prefer engineers (thumbs up) and allow Medics and not specialized (for service staff).
In my farm dome i have 6 farms, smart homes and the standard services. The filter is basically the same as the engineering dome, but replace engineer with botanist.
The same applies to science dome and if you didn't roll Extractor AI, you can use this for Geologists as well.
Always unload your Not specialized workers from Earth next to the University dome and make ruse there's living space for them. Later in the game, when you're really overcrowded with Non specialized workers everywhere, you can prepare a bigger dome for the universities with empty apartments and just forbid the non specialized workers in your specialized domes for a while and they'll migrate to the university dome. You can cancel the filter later. But make sure the dome is close or that you have a solid shuttle system in place (I go with one shuttle station per dome)
I figured this out while playing my latest game (Sol 300). I know that you can tweak the filters even more and i'm going to do that, because i plan on creating a dome for the retired, so i'll mess with the age groups in the filter as well. And i'll have to build a Mega dome for the nurseries, because i'm a wee bit overcrowded with children at the moment, but my science, engineering and botanist domes work perfectly.
When i figure out the rest, i'll probably write it down too.
