Is there any chance ground wars on planets can get Streamlined and introduce better 3d or 2d graphics, similiar perhaps to Intelligent system's famous "advance wars" graphics?
I don't think ground wars need any big changes, but I would like it if armies included a little species portrait for the immersion.

They did say the bio and psionic changes will be free, no DLC needed. So what ever they end up putting in the DLC will be on top of the overhauled ascensions.

Wild guess: Bio rework, so the DLC will be genetic themed. And we are talking large scale gene tampering here. Like shock troops made of giant chickens shooting lazers from their eyes. Xeno-Compatibility on extreme heretic levels. Merging of flora and species, living cities, harvesting alien DNA for heretic research projects. Oh yes it will be glorious.

Ascensions themselves are DLC-locked (Utopia unlocks the 3 general paths, Synthetic Dawn unlocks gestalt machine ascension, Machine Age also unlocks cybernetic/synthetic/gestalt and adds extra features on top). It'll be DLC in the same vein as the Machine Age for both Bio and Psionic. I think it's pretty clear baseline ascension changes will be 'free' if you already have Utopia, with extra content on top for the DLC.

That is pretty much what I meant, though they also said the psionic changes will be before any dlc manifests.

My guess is biopunk themed dlc and main idea work around how far we can go with bio technologies. New features open higher bio technologies in biological empires to make distinct with machine empires and it can go further with Genetic ascension.
Ideas like gather exotic gene materials, create own leviathan with player's choice, create hybrid space fauna, bio ships that can equip parts without ordinary limitation, etc, can work with this too.

Perhaps the person who is downvoting my inquiry into ground war improvements can explain why improving a current gameplay feature is disagreeable? Crusader kings is a drastically different format from Stellaris, sir.

Said the person who has just downvoting several of my posts of other PDX games without read them.

While ground war improvements would be cool, devs said that the system will not be reworked several times. Also, I do not think different graphics will make the system better. Someone mentioned that ground war system could work like other systems that use events such as the archaeological system. That sounds more interesting to me.

Guess we are finally getting living / bio ships with 4.0. and a lot of Hivemind goodies I would assume. Seems like that would be a prefect fit for a Biological update/expansion like 4.0. Then later a Psionic focused dlc.

The real question is what the 3rd dlc is gonna be

This is a sorely underdeveloped feature of the game. For a group of sci fi enthusiasts, I'd expect more interest in formulated 2d or 3d representations of army units that are used to conquer worlds with important resources as opposed to simple blockades and orbital bombardments.

Why limit the game to only space combat if ground combat can be improved?

Technically that's exactly what was true of Machine Age. It's probably the same model except with genetic and psionic in different updates, but similar systems of the "basic version" we have now being updated for free, while branched new options are DLC-only.

Like I fully expect if there are bioships (maybe?) those will probably be a genetic ascension variant, and there's virtually no chance they'll be in the free patch. Or there could be a psychic machines psionic variant (either machine empires going psionic or just psionic empires that can make their robots psionic) - same thing, no way that's part of the free update.

Even with the upcoming changes to improve performance, I'm pretty sure that this level of depth to ground combat would make it so that you couldn't be able to play the game without the game crashing unless you were playing on a quantum supercomputer, and even then you'd have insane lag.

I'm not a game developer nor a programmer, but I can tell you that just because representations of individual units on the battlefield worked for Endless Space 2 doesn't mean they would work for Stellaris.

To add to the topic of the thread itself, I'm repeating my old sentiments here: I think (well, hope) that we'll be getting a new Species Pack, as it has been three years since the last one, Toxoids. Personally, my wish is for either Energy Beings or Lovecraftian Abominations, unless Paradox manages to find some other category to make into a Phenotype.

As one of those that defended a ground combat rework in Stellaris back in the day: It's dead, Jim.

I mean, I would like to have more meaningful ground combat too, but developers have expressed several times that it doesn't fit their vision, and that their resources would be best employed elsewhere.

Do I agree with them? Nope. But that's their prerogative. It is their game, and authorial freedom is important and worth respecting.

Perhaps in Stellaris 2, who knows. But we ain't gonna see proper ground combat in a long time, I am sure of that.

It's been reported on reddit that people have found code referencing "infernals pack" in the beta.

I have just been made aware of it, hoping they include fallen angels and/or Lovecraftian beasts.

This would undeniably be an easy and cool addition to the ground war system, but would also be *waaaaay* too slow. Colossus usage would skyrocket (as if it wasn't high enough already).
