Speeding up game on Laptop

My laptop is as follows Compaq Presario 1500. P4 1.7 ghz. 1 gig ram, 32mb video card, 30gb hdd, with 2.1gb free space.

The game runs pretty slow, even on the fastest setting on the laptop. What could I do to improve it?

The game runs lightning fast on my desktop, a p4 3.0ghz, with a 256mb video card and 1 gig of RAM. Is the video card that much of a differance on this game?

I run HOI2 on a Compaq Athalon 1400 processor with 256 meg of RAM and a 30 gig HD. The video runs through the processor at 64MB. I have roughly 6GB free on my hard drive. The game runs fine for me even at the fastest speeds. Do you have alot of programs running in the background or the taskbar?

Get 3Danylizer. This speeds up all games really fast, and practically doubes the output of the graphics card. Sorry I don;t have a link for it.
