Depends where you start. Avoid the 'Five Kings' and 'Feast for Crows' bookmarks, in other words play before them, and you should be fine.

Avoid The Crowned Stag too. I recommend Robert's Rebellion; it doesn't have spoilers and gives you some nice background to the series.

Nope, the earliest start is around 300 years before the series is set.

To be fair, there are events that can happen to non-story characters which are tied to the story. I am not sure if these events can happen in the the events are availble in the first two bookmarks, though.

Advice, don't start at the earliest start date, go about a year in, that way you actually have the iron throne on your map.
