Stand Together or Die Alone

September 19th, 2015 06:23 Local Time

Paradox, Massachusetts

"Sir, we have a situation"

The weathered captain could hear the panic in the young recruits voice. The radio static mixing in and out could do little to mask the anxiety on the other end of the walkie. For that matter either could the spatter of gunshots.

"Report in!"

"Unknown hostiles attacking the facility...they've overrun our poss-" Static cut in and out for a second until the captain slapped the side of the walkie.

"Soaking in bullets like nothing! ... Multiple cas- ... -ike some kind of zombie!"

It was real then, the reports coming out of the south side. The captain sighed heavily, knowing things had just gone from bad the worse.

"Okay son, I need you to lock down the facility and bunker down until we can get you, do you hear me. Bunker down."

He waited minutes for a response, but there was just dead air. Then after what seemed like ages, the static clipped through again. The voice was different thise time, feminine and much more confident.

"Roger,"

The voice did not belong to any of the captain's men, but he did recognize it. Things hadn't just gone from bad to worse, there was a real chance the end times had come.

What is this?

Welcome! Stand together is a little experiment of an OT game I've been working on. It's a zombie based cooperative survival game, where you take the role of a survivor in a small town, working together to stave off the outbreak and hopefully build some sort of lasting safety in the new way of life. The goal of this is to have enough rules to make it a game but also not so much rules that it isn't easy to pick up or do in character role plays.

The game will be split into two sections, downtime and missions. Downtime is strictly for roleplaying and inter-character interaction should you wish. Anyone who doesn't specifically do anything will be considered doing some ordinary task to help the survivors (collect goods, farm, mentor, etc). Time passes pretty fluidly in downtime.

Missions are where your skills and decision making have real and lasting effects on yourself and the other survivors. Your orders for the turn may save a life or find additional supplies, or lead to death and ruin. Each order will use a skill, and the result will be posted by the GM (that's me!). Each 'turn' can be ten minutes or ten seconds depending on the mission (but expect mostly 10 minutes).

How to make a character

So you want to play? Fantastic! In order to play you'll need to let everyone know 'who' you are:

Name:
Bio:

As well as that you will need to assign 'skills'. For now each player will have 3 skills, two marked as 'good' and one marked as 'great'. These represent the areas your character excels in and are used (along with a touch of randomization) to determine success or failure in missions. Obviously 'great' has a better chance of succeeding than 'good'...doubly so in fact!

The current skills to choose from are below.

CQC - Involves all forms of close quarters combat such as martial arts, knives, etc.
Improvising - Involves what happens when plans fall apart and no weapons are around
Leadership - Involves the ability to bring out the best in others
Medical - Involves the ability the bandage wounds and cure illness. A doctor is only as good as his medicine though.
Observation - Involves both the ability to detect danger approaching and the ability to investigate to find information or supplies.
Running - Involves all things evasive, such as avoiding a thrown object or racing to save a friend.
Shooting - Involves pistols, shotguns, rifles and anything that resembles a gun
Stealth - Involves the ability the remain undetected by zombies.
Strength - Involves ability to push, pull, lift and carry.
Trapping - Involves the ability to set and spring traps on the unexpecting horde.

I will also allow you to attempt to have your own skill so long as I approve it.

So the final sheet would be

Current Players

Audren
Name: Ihsan Tehani
Bio: Born and raised in the suburbs of southern Delaware, Ihsan was always the fastest kid around. Whether it was the city streets or the forested parks, nothing could stop Ihsan from running his heart out. Star of the track and cross country teams, Ihsan was nonetheless not popular in school, thanks to his frightful nature. He had to always be on his toes to not get beaten up. He could remarkably light on his feet when he needed to, but when the going gets tough, his first instinct is to run away. After graduating from college, Ihsan went on a road trip along the East Coast, finding his way to Millie's Supermarket in his endless and futile search for good American hummus.
Great Skill: Running
Good Skill: Observation
Good Skill: Stealth

CaesarCzech
Name:Gorkan Hawke
Bio:Former 28 year old Captain in Finnish army decided to retire in some quiet place, after beeing wounded in afganistan.Needless to say he gets lot more than he bargained for.He is very good at handling combat situations, but to do this he must be properly supplied and equiped, as in Afganistan supplies and equipment were provided, its needless to say that he doesnt have much experience in getting the equipment, just using it.
Great:Leadership
Good:Shotting
Good:CQC

Clopiroth
Name: Dakota Harrison
Bio: The oldest daughter of a middle-class divorced family, lives with her mother Alissa, her stepfather Johan and her eight years old halfbrother William in a house near the center of the town, where their family owns a medium-sized hardware and appliances store. She, herself, is a student in the local school, with over average grades, and head of the cheerleader squad after the previous one graduated this year. Right now, she is in Millie´s Supermarket to get some snacks and drinks, and maybe get to convince someone to buy her booze, as she has a party with friends this night.
Skills:
Great: Improvising (Her above average intelligence, and experience in the cruel, backstabing world of cheerleaders politics has made her a great improviser)
Good: Running (An athletic person, after years of exercise and healthy diet)
Good: Observation (Her natural friendliness and awareness allow her to find things... And to get others to give them!)

alexander23
Name: Haru Johnson
Bio:TBA
Age: 19
Great: Gymnast
Good:CQC
Good:Observation

Ironhide G1
Name: Srg. George Manster
Bio: This 45 year-old war veteran is by no means out of shape. He is as tough as nails, and can keep his cool even when the situation gets tough. His more than enough experience of combat means that he's harder to scare or faze in the face of danger. From combat he has become extremely observant and can really improvise in a pinch, but his true quality is leadership. He commands respect well, and knows his way around almost every situation. He might seem insane at times, but every person under his command knows he will risk everything to save them, they will gladly follow him into battle. He is harsh, but fair, and never will hesitate to help one of his comrades in need. His arms might not be as strong as his mind, but those who follow him know that he will not give up trying, ever, even to his dying breath.

Srg. Manster, having retired 5 years ago, moved to the town of Paradox, Mass. There, every Saturday night at Millie's Supermarket was poker night. He always played with his two veteran friends, or a new occasional visitor to town. This night, however, knowing that his two friends were on vacation, he calmly sat down at the table, and waited to see who would challenge him and fail against him.

Great: Leadership
Good: Observation
Good: Improvisation

Jeeshadow
Name: Andrew Damian Knight
Age: 36
Bio: The chief, and only, Narcotics Detective in the Narcotics Division for the Paradox Police Department (PPD). Andrew grew up in Boston, a member of a upper-middle class family. He had always wanted to be a cop, and also liked drugs (mainly pot), so when he graduated from Harvard, he got his dream job, being recruited as a Special Agent for the DEA. He served with the DEA for a little less than a decade before he left. He was not done wanting to be a cop, so he ended up applying to join the Paradox Police Department, which offered him a more useful salary and a far less dangerous job, at least until the entire world went to hell.
Great: Observation, he is a detective. Its kinda necessary
Good: Shooting, He is a cop. Apparently they all have two guns.
Good: Stealth, from all that undercover work.

Rovsea
Name: Robert V. Seamoore. ("Ro V. Sea", if you will)
Age: 26
Bio: He's just returned from Med. School further south in Maryland, but hasn't found a job as a doctor in a major hospital yet. Still, he is in good shape, has steady, flexible fingers good for surgery, bandaging, or assembling a useful tool out of apparent scraps using creativity and a bit of intellect.

NPC Spotlight

This is a character who exists in the world who will be controlled by me but wont take an active part in missions unless needed. There skills are different as they are not main characters. Consider them extras to your leading man/woman.

Name: Dr. Oliver Hallman
Bio: Dr. Hallman is an elderly man who owns his own pediatric practice in North Paradox creatively called Paradox Pediatrics. On a good day described as dry, the good doctor pours all of his focus on Medicine, eschewing such needless things as bedside manner and being nice to people. At the time of the outbreak Dr. Hallman was returning from a round of golf, as it is legally required for all doctors to golf.
Good: Medical
Good: Observation

Name :Terry Carvanach
Bio: Former high school track star whose addiction to different drugs at Boston College ruined his chances at a free education. Now clean, Terry is working full time at Millie's to save up for Paradox Community College. His legs work faster than his brain in most instances.
Great: Running

Name: Janice Erbing
Bio: A retired librarian, Janice could shush the heck out of the most unruly of kids. Now working at Millie's for extra bingo money, she takes joy in chatting with customers in line.
Good: Leadership
Good: Observation

Millie's Supermarket
Paradox, Massachusetts

September 19th, 2015 07:02 Local Time

The brightly lit grocery store serves as the starting point for this story. There are two employees on the floor, a late twenties grocery worker stocking shelves and a older woman manning the lone check out open this early. The sun is rising on the crisp New England fall day and you've decided to go grocery shopping for ... some reason.

The store itself is a smaller grocery store, with only about six aisles of groceries and a small frozen section. The produce department is laughable and meat, deli and seafood are all one area. All in all Millie's has seen better days, but the prices are low and the employees are very nice.

And that makes the minimum I wanted of 5, welcome Ironhide, glad to have you.

Mission One is for all players and will begin around this time tomorrow. There is no limit to the number of players so keep 'em coming!

All players involved in Mission One will get a special bonus.

gooddamn we got Too many leaders :D

Oh well. Think about this though- look at your leader and my leader. They specialize in different things. You do combat, I plan, improvise and inspire morale. Also it makes good roleplaying to have two or more people striving for leadership. May the best win!
