View on the council chambers inside the agrodome of Bachburg fortress

Archduke Leopold von Bach stands at the window of the new council chambers in the Bachburg fortress, formerly the Bacharche. Surrounded by all sides by green it was the closest thing compared to the old lush home planet the Archduchy once had. He sighed. A gas giant was their new home now, the name New Styria conjuring up the images in his mind of a better time in the past. It only augmented his determination to restore his people to their ancestral homeland down the road, or at least during his lifetime providing them with a better homeland then the asteroid belt and the assorted moons around the gas giant, however big and expansive they may be. One of them, the very same the Bachburg stood upon was comparable to the size of a small planet in itself.

Deep in thought, he did not notice his trusted council members file into the room at first.
First is his chancellor Ivan von Kinsky, about the same age as Leopold and one of his oldest childhood friends and his brother-in-law. A calm, collected and analytical mind lurked behind his eyes.
180px-TerranHero02Wide.png

Ivan Kinsky

Francis Tegethoff who lost a leg during the evacuation of Styria, whilst holding the line on the last arch before leaving the planet. His father Joseph, Leopold´s former commander of the archducal forces had been left behind and Leopold had to promise to Joseph to ensure that Francis went off the planet according to his father´s wish. His desire of vengeance against the Insectoid Threat was only tempered by his sense of duty and family.

180px-TerranHero03Wide.png

Francis Tegethoff
Duchess Anastacia von Fuchs comes in next, responsible for the economic affairs of the Bach estate and by extension of the whole archduchy. Never a prospect for the throne of her duchy due to five other successors older then her, she welcomed the chance to enter the service of the Archduke itself when offered a minor administrative position and had worked herself up the ranks.
TerranHero01Wide.png

Duchess Anastacia von Fuchs

Closely follows Richard Kaunitz, the foreign minister of the Archduchy whose job as everyone else´s had undergone rapid changes. Centuries old relations were useless in the fringe, as the Archduchy was one of the few powers in the old neighborhood who took the insectoid threat seriously and so the new diplomatic landscape provided for quite the challenge.
TerranHero08Wide.png

Richard Kaunitz

And last in struts Caroline Swieten, responsible for clandestine operations in the Archduchy. Her predecessor was one of the few not making it off Styria in the evacuation. She is in the words of the Archduke “colorful” caring not about protocol or status. A former smuggler, she joined the evacuation of Styria and offered her services and her knowledge to the Archduchy in exchange for amnesty. Her expertise already proved valuable during the hectic flight after the evacuation and whilst deserved her appointment is a point of friction with the other council members.

Caroline Swieten

Caroline is the one who makes Leopold notice the councilors as she struts loudly in and with a noticeable thump places herself on one of the seats. Archduke Leopold turns around and after gathering his thoughts speaks up:

“Thank you all for coming, with most basic tasks in getting our colony up and running achieved it is time to look into the future. Everyone here presented me with the most pressing issues and we will sort through those one by one. Ivan, you go first.”

The Chancellor stood up whilst Leopold seated himself at the top of the table and addresses the room.

“I have been in intensive contact with the leader Eugen Montecuccoli of the colony called ‘New Triest’. The good news is that they are interested in peaceful co-operation with the Archduchy. As our size dwarfs theirs by quite a measure they were quite happy to see that our intentions were peaceful as well. Channels have been opened with them and we have already agreed on a joint-venture in getting the Tylium ore production up to speed.
With your ascent I would offer them associate status as a free city in the Archduchy and offer our protection to them. Pooling our ressources is the smart thing to do here, I think. Doubtless Anastacia will agree with me.”

Anastacia nods and Leopold agrees: “This is most wise, Ivan, thank you.”

Next up is Kaunitz:

“Our immeadite neighbourhood seems to have attracted only one colony, the Kingdom of Arlia. They seem to be organized as a monarchy as well, which bodes well for future relations. Apart from King Erion Arlian contacting us and wishing for peaceful relations, they seem to have signed the Valor Accords and have sent whatever fleet they have left after planetfall to support the Directorate against our insectoid pursuers. Doubtless Francis will fill you in on our military situation later. The insectoid threat it seems is far from over. I would advise to sign the Valor Accords as it is our best to contain it early and also as a sign that we are interested in close co-operation with the Kingdom of Arlia. Also Anastacia proposed to open trade routes with the Kingdom, we should get trade flowing as soon as possible and it is an excellent possibility to see if we can get a company in our sector interested in working for us early on.“

Leopold nods and ask: „Francis?“

Francis Tegethoff speaks up:

“I am hurting for action and normally I would advise caution in getting back into action that quickly. But it seems our homefront is safe for now with Arlia heading off and New Triest being peaceful.
I think with the Directorate our odds of a small victory are good and people could use a boost to morale. I will personally oversee our few corvettes and fighters we can spare.”
Leopold thinks upon this for a few moments and then agrees:

“Yes, better together now then stand alone later. Make it happen. Anastacia?”

Duchess Anastacia von Fuchs stood next, whilst the others sit back down.

“Our initial scans have been verified by our prospectors. We have uncovered substantial Tylium ore deposits on New Styria. We should get them going in no time and I am more then curious to see how our industry will fare with actual ressources, which we never had back in old Styria. As soon as Kaunitz hears back from the Kingdom we can look into getting some Tylium Ore to customers.”

Leopold responds:
“Good, so much for the most pressing issues. Now onto our population figures….”

Fleet Order: The Archducal Navy under the command of Francis Tegethoff will rendezvous with the Valorous fleet at Agatha Minor, participating in any action against the Insectoids together with the Directorate.

Base Order: The Archduchy will enter in diplomatic negotiations with the colony and offer them the status of a free city in the Archduchy.

Diplomatic: The Archduchy will sign the Valor Accords.
The Archduchy will open channels with the Kingdom of Arlia and will offer an economic contract to a company soon, if the Kingdom is interested in establishing a trade route.

Part one of my Turn 1 IC

The hanger bay of the frigate Radiant Cobb was in a state of frenzy. Her deck crews were dashing between the fighters, gunboats and shuttles that made up her strike craft wing, doing final maintenance checks and shouting at each other to get out of the way. For all its chaos, the process was moving forward with remarkable speed. Audacious Cobb knew that in just a few minutes the deck would be cleared.

Radiant Cobb had emerged from hyperspace on the edge of the asteroid field that would become the Livin’ Legends’ new home. The charts provided by the Directorate laid down the path of the largest of them in general terms. A cluster of rocks orbiting between frozen Hydra Alpha and scorching Hydra Charlie, asteroid field Hydra Echo hadn’t merited further investigation. It was the backwater of nowhere, which suited the Legends just fine.

Jayne Cobb wasn’t what anyone would call intelligent or responsible. But despite common belief, he wasn’t entirely stupid and reckless. He wasn’t about to go charging into an uncharted asteroid field in his prized ship carrying his entire family. Not without having a look-see first. So his best pilots were doing some recon flights.

One of those pilots came up to Audacious and her sisters Radiant and Patience as they walked onto the deck. She was a little wisp of a thing, with their mother’s dancer’s build and long brown hair. She was wearing a flight suit at least one size too large, and her grin was at least two sizes too big for her face.

“Change your minds yet? There’s still time if you hurry and suit up.” Her enthusiasm was usually infectious. Long exposure had made Temperance Cobb’s sisters immune.

“Cram into a shuttle to spend hours looking at potato shaped rocks? Oh, I wish I could.” Tempe was equally immune to her sister Pat’s habitual sarcasm.

“Why come down then? No need for a big farewell. It’s not all that dangerous a flight.”

Audi spoke up. “The Blob’s sending over an ambassador. ‘Ser Alfred Gramm.’ So Ma thought I should be here to greet him. Then Rad came along to kick his ass if he gives and excuse.”

Tempe looked at Pat. “And you’re here because?”

“She’s nosy.” Rad said.

“God knows how long we were in hyperspace. There’s finally someone new and different around here. I’m not going to miss that. Besides, he might be cute.” Patience Cobb’s smile was predatory.

“Well, sounds like sooo much fun.” Tempe taunted back. “Enjoy babysitting Little Lord Fauntleroy. Meanwhile, some of us have actual work to do. I’ll try and bring you back a rock.” She sauntered away to her ship.

Extranet report:

As long since previously reported, the Legends explored Cobb's Rocks and received an ambassador from the Blob

The Kingdom of Arlia: Into the Fire

The bridge of the Crown was abuzz with activity as dozens of reports from New Autem were coming through alongside a flood of information from the rest of the Fringe.

"Erion!" Belinda yelled, trying to get her brother's attention over the noise. He was talking with a communication's officer in a corner of the bridge. The discussion looked important.

"Erion, I've been looking for you for the last five minutes," Belinda said as she walked up to her brother. Then, a buzz came from the device attached to her wrist. She sighed and hit a button, and a digital display popped up in front of her face as she looked over the message.

"Sorry, it's been a busy day," he told her, pausing so she could answer her "Scepter," the nickname for the device the princess used to micromanage most of New Autem at once. Again, it had been a gift from Careena. Erion had one, but he never used it because it was incredibly complicated and he could never keep up with it.

mass_effect_omni_tool_3_by_frijoleluna-d3gsyr3.jpg

"Busy month," Belinda corrected, sending a message confirming her appearance on NAN, or New Autem News, the major media outlet that had sprung up on the planet. The digital display vanished as she put her arm down. "Anyway, I needed to tell you that the Archduchy responded to our message."

"We'll respond to that later. Did you forget that we have an appearance to make on EDI in ten minutes?" Erion told her, hitting a few buttons at the officer's console and sending a copy of the Athenium Directorate's message to Erion's personal computer.

"Crap, I forgot," Belinda hissed, running her fingers through her hair. "I look awful," she complained, looking into a blank monitor and trying to fix her hair.

"So do I. We can look bad together," her brother said as he grabbed his sister's arm and pulled her towards the door.

"Erion!" Belinda complained, catching her footing and walking beside her brother as the two exited the bridge. The rest of the Crown was slightly less busy, but only just so. Until proper facilities could be set up on New Autem, the Kingdom of Arlia was still run from the flagship, which remained in orbit around the planet. A private conference room had been set aside to use from the EDI interview, which would be conducted over the ExtraNet.

"King, Princess," a guard nodded as the two entered the room.

Must be new, Erion thought. Most of the Crown's crew treated the monarchs much more informally than that.

"Sixty seconds to air," one of the two technicians in the room told them. They were two EDI reporters that had been flown out to the Crown to make sure the interview went well. One was running the camera, while the other was looking at a variety of information on a mobile display.

"Thank you," Belinda told her, before turning to her brother and fixing his hair.

"Remind me to add Royal Stylist to your list of titles," he said sarcastically, but he waited for her to finish.

"You'll thank me when a girl finally decides to bear your heir," she retorted. They both knew she was joking, though. Although Erion was far from the most attractive man to have ever lived, he wasn't bad-looking. Add that to that fact that he was a King, and he had had numerous opportunities to have any number of beautiful women. However, he had shown nearly nonexistent interest in the often air-headed but attractive noblewomen of Careena's court. He told Belinda over and over that he would know the one when he saw her. His insistence on waiting and usual chivalrous manner had lead to rampant rumors that he was a virgin King. In fact, they were right, but Erion had never felt the need to tell anyone that. Belinda had had a few relationships that had served for intense gossip amongst Careena's court, but none of them had lasted longer than a few months.

"That's assuming you don't have one or five first,"[/B he joked. He knew that his sister had far from loose morals, but she was much more freer with them than Erion.

"Very funny," she said as she rolled her eyes. She finished fixing her brother's twin and began to work on her own.

A few seconds later, the technician interrupted her. "And you're on in five, four, three, two, one..." An EDI reporter located back in their headquarters had already made an introduction for the speech the monarchs were about to make. Belinda was the first to speak.

"Greetings, citizens of the Fringe! I'm sure you know that I am Belinda Arlian and that this is my brother, King Erion Arlian. I would like to inform you all as to the current status of our new home. At three months from settlement, New Autem stands with a population of 104,647. The geography of the planet is incredibly mountainous. 50% of the planet is covered in rocky mountains, seperated into three distinct continent. The remaining half of the planet is covered in water with a salinity 1.17 times that of Earth. Each continent supports a relatively sparse selection of natural life, but the life on each continent is very different from one another. The oceans support a very diverse breadth of life, and we have barely managed to catalog about half a percent of the estimated number of unique species."

"On to the details of our settlement. The primary city has been named Didymus Civitatem by its residents. Two major outlining settlements have sprung in the last month. Respectively, they are known as Agfield and Misty Springs. In addition to settlements founded by the Kingdom of Arlia, there was an undocumented colony already on the planet called New Ireland. We have been in heavy comminucation with their leaders, and I am proud to announce that we have negiotiated the New Dublin Accords. Under this agreement, all citizens of New Ireland will become citizens of the Kingdom of Arlia and the full rights and protections of all other citizens. Domestic trade between New Ireland and Didymus is expected to grow the GDP of both regions appreciably."

With that, Belinda took a step back and Erion stepped forward.

"Now, I will move on to the more somber topic of the Bug War. Belinda and I understand that the threat the bugs pose to the Athenium Directorate is a threat to all of the Fringe. As such, I am announcing that I have signed the Valor Accords and am sending all available battle crafts of the Royal Navy to Agatha Minor to meet up with the rest of the Valor Fleet. In addititon to this, I am opening the doors of New Autem wide open to all refugees from the Bug Wars. Finally, there is one more thing I feel that you all should know. I will be going along with the Royal Navy to fight alongside the soldiers of Arlia. Thank you all for your time, and I hope that good fortune is in all our futures."

With that, the technician cut the broadcast. Erion turned to see Belinda's shocked expression staring at him. He hadn't informed her of his decision to go along with the Royal Navy.

"Belinda..." he started, but she turned and left the room. She knew that there was no talking her brother out of his decision, but she was worried and furious all at the same time. Erion sighed before going to follow her.

Extranet Report

"The speech given by Erion and Belinda Arlian today has confirmed that the Kingdom of Arlia has signed the Valor Accords and are sending their fleet to Agatha Minor. In addition to this, they have arranged the New Dublin Accords with the leaders of New Ireland, beginning the integration of the colony into the Kingdom of Arlia. This is all the news we have at this time."

The Sentinels were optimistic. Training of the new recruits progressed smoothly, a united effort by the powers of the fringe to stamp out humanity's great enemy was underway, and Haven Magenta was beginning to look like a proper fortress. From the newly installed comm center in the haven, Second Paladin Josephine Montagne mulled over recent events. She had seen the Arlian's broadcast several days ago along with the rest of the fringe. This would be her last chance to send the message she had been preparing before the Mercy set course for Agatha, with her at the helm. Josephine had been chosen to lead what troops the Sentinels could spare for their contribution to the Spartan offensive. Only a quarter of their forces could be spared, but every one of the soldiers setting out with her were veterans, and she she had high hopes for this new phase of the bug wars. She shook her head and stood straight, her battle-ready armor clinking as she moved. She flicked a switch on a panel and started the video feed.

"To King Erion Arlian, this is Second Paladin Josephine of the Sentinels. We have received your recent broadcast, and I would like to personally congratulate you for your bravery and valor. It is good to see a leader stepping into the fray, to fight alongside his men and see for himself what they face in the field of battle. I will be leading our troops in the upcoming battle. Should circumstances allow it, my men and I would welcome the chance to fight beside you. Regardless, may you find good fortune in your endeavors. Paladin Josephine, signing off."

The Paladin flicked the switch again to stop the feed, then fiddled with more buttons to send the message to the Crown. Josephine frowned, her thoughts turning to the Atheneum Directorate. Like her brethren, she did not trust the Athenians and had her doubts about them and their war initiative. With any luck the Arlians would prove faithful friends. Since arriving in the fringe, the Sentinels had avoided making any diplomatic overtures towards the other powers by the command of Nathaniel Hallis himself. The captain felt they had involved themselves too much with the Arlians as it was. He would surely disapprove of the message Josephine had just sent and her thoughts of alliance with the Kingdom, but he would do noting to stop her. She smirked, wondering how long till the man stepped down completely and allowed one of her fellow Paladins to take the reins. Such thoughts were useless for now. Josephine had many more preparations to make and little time to make them.

Extranet Report

In an effort to build upon the friendly relations between the two powers, the commander of the Sentinel's Spartan Expeditionary Force has offered to support King Erion and the Arlian armed forces during the counter-offensive to cleanse Sparta of the Insectoid menace.

The Education Of Youth, Part I

"Five more laps!", a physical trainer of ComStar shouted at the fifty students, their bodies strained under their weight in the newly finished gravitational training facility

These were the students of the ComStar Alpha School where the smartest children found themselves after scoring the highest on the Directive Competency Tests. Although all students underwent physical training in gravitation facilities these students were pushed harder. The education system must not only produce youth well versed in philosophy, mathematics, and the other typical subjects but they must learn never to quit. Kilnar Lafwa, ComStar Minister of Youth Development observed in secret with his staff.

"High Command will be pleased with our results in the first quarter. Over nine hundred of our best are performing incredibly well on all the mental and physical tests."

Minister Lafwa studied the latest reports.

Introduction

Since the emergence of Salterite Philosophy and the influence of Jeril Salter's government in Kedel Point the education of youth was radically altered. Twenty years of intensive training of body and mind (and spirit) was paramount guided by the philosophy of Salter, Strauss, and Kundagar. Decades of this system has provided us with quite exceptional youth through the years. Our educational facilities are receiving the necessary resources (financial and personnel) to meet the demands of the High Command.

Alpha Youth
438 males
358 females
93% at optimal physical condition
87% passing educational competency tests
95% considered psychological stable

Projections suggest that 89% of Alpha Youth have ambitions for citizenship and 67% have ambitions for the High Command.

FNN Special Report...

Atheneum Bug War

robot_500x305.jpg

EDI

"Greetings citizens of the Fringe and welcome to an FNN special report regarding the Atheneum Bug War.

Three months ago, Lord-Admiral Alexis Diodorus, in his humility, appealed to the colonies of the Fringe for assistance in quelling the Insectoid threat in the Atheneum Star System. The response was overwhelming in it's support of the Atheneum Directorate. We will now take a look at the trials and sacrifices made by the fighting men and women of the Fringe in their effort to make a safer tomorrow.

Sparta, the barren and frigid world on the outer orbit of the Atheneum star, was the sight of a hotly contested sight between mankind and the insectoid menace. A major effort was orchestrated under the overwatch of the fifth fleet, commanded by Rear Admiral Nicholas Salaris. The fleet formed a net around the Sparta in preparation of orbital support, as the bulk of the ground war was fought by mercenary ground forces.

Forces on the ground designated targets for the orbital fleet, thus giving firing solutions and using technology against the insect scourge. Mercenary ships were on hand to give low atmospheric air support as well in order to safeguard the advance of ground forces into Cleisthenes City.

1283514772_746_realsize.jpg

The operation was a success, until the mercenary companies moved into the underground districts of the city. Without proper firing solutions, companies were left without fleet support and heavy casualties were inflicted. Despite the hardship, the companies overcame and rooted out an Insectoid hive. Though grit and determination, the mercs excelled at taking the fight to a terrible enemy. Following the extermination of multiple Insectoid queens, all that was left was clean up ops. As of this morning, the Directorate officially announced that Sparta is now safe from Insectoid infestation.

Meanwhile, major operations performed by the first through fourth fleets of the Directorate were focused on eliminating the bugs that had infested Ithaca Pritoris on New Athens. A great fleet was amassed with the aid of Zenith United, The New Anthropic Republic, The New Wolfen Republic, The Kingdom of Arlia, The Archducal Navy, USGIR, and the USGSR accompanied by the Dragarian fleet. Without a doubt this is the largest fighting force the Fringe has ever seen, and stand united against the threat of all mankind.

tumblr_n12n6oYbsu1ruox2ao1_500.jpg

Fighting on Ithaca Pritoris was intense as 'hotdrops' were carried out en mass, and colonial regiments tactically advanced across the continental plate. Hives were systematically cleansed under careful overwatch of Lord-Admiral Diodorus himself. Casualties were severe, however multiple hives were rooted out and extinguished. As of this broadcast, combat operations are still underway and it is feared that Hives still exist on New Athens.

We now go live to Lord-Admiral Diodorus via extranet link..."

"It is with eternal gratitude that I deliver this message of thanks to the colonies and companies of the Fringe. The war against the bugs is far from over, and I hope that we will have the continued support of the Valorous throughout. I have ordered additional contracts to be offered to the companies of the Fringe in this time of crisis and seek to keep up the momentum in exterminating the bugs from Atheneum. Thank you all."

"While the war may not be over, recent victories do suggest that we have reached a turning point, and it won't be long that peace will finally be ours.
With FNN, I am EDI. Good night."
