What a cute tank we got there. :D Having lived in Haderslev that was actually quite a funny chapter. A very well-written AAR IMO and very funny.

Are those actual pics of the Danish army from the time btw?

Perhaps you should be prepared for the worst and build a few transports and build up IC in Iceland!

But good luck, hopefully you can create a fortress Copenhagen!

Also I musst say that the Danish FP-4's and FP-5's where possibly the cutest little tanks ever made. If I where a Danish soldier I'd drive it down the street and try to pick up girls with it! :D

Thank you guys. I am wondering if I should not succeed in defending my beloved Danish border, perhaps I should release Denmark as a puppet or make it an ally of Germany, as it was i reality until August 1943! (Something that we are not very proud of and try to deny). The fact is, that the Danish government knew exactly when and were the Germans would attack as members of Cannaris staff had leaked those informations to Danish spies!

The Danish waters had been mined, but the day before the attack the mines in the routes the German navy were going to use was removed, because they needed “repairs”! The gunners at the fortresses defending Copenhagen was for the first (and last) time in the history of those fortresses ordered to go home on the day before the attack.

The Copenhagen air defence were given strict orders not to mobilize in case of an attack, the same goes for the army in southern Jutland!

In Korsoer the dock workers (right word?) were told to help German military ships when entering the harbour!

There are many, many more examples. For those who read Danish see: http://home.worldonline.dk/pjuulm/kafka/balling.htm

People can criticize Denmark all they like for their lack of fighting in World War Two, but Denmark still must be praised for how it resisted Hitler's crimes against humanity. In no other European country did the people take their entire Jewish population, put them on boats, and send them to a foreign country to save them (the Danes sent them to Sweden). It helps to prove just how much more could have been done to stop Hitler's genocide - so the people of Denmark deserve all the praise for what they did.

Actually the first thing we did was to let our police hand over many of the foreigners in the country (not jews, but Russians, Kommunists, Poles, and people from allied countries) to the Germans (without a German request!)... something we can be proud of??? I think not... The fact is, that we were an ally of Germany just like Italy. Our government had had a meeting with German authorities in Rostock on 17.3 1940 during which the occupation of Denmark was planned... There are lots of evidence for this (the Germans who attended this meeting have told it, and what reasen should they have to lie???), but people who dare say it in public are banned and some (like Jon Galster) have even been courtmartialled (spl???)... The Danish people have been filled with lies since the war! (No I don't suffer from paranoia :p )

Btw... The soldiers of the Freikorps Dänemark (a corps consisting of Danish vulenteers), was in many cases asked by the government to help the Germans, they were all promised (in writing) that they could not be procecuted after the war... but when they got back, most of them was put in jail! (One on my fathers workmates was sentenced to 8 years in jail)...

yeah im proud that we helped the jews in avoiding german captivity, but for every story that is told of 'unselfish' aid to the jews, there is one told of extortion and proffiteering on the jewish situation... yeah we helped a lot more than a lot of other countries... but we are surely not saints... I for one am absolutely not proud of the danish goverments behavoir pre and post invasion... (i could insert a biting remark at the social democrats... but i wont :))

great start on this aar, keep it up

I'm an American, but I've studied the war quite extensively, and my graduate school work will continue to focus on it. From my research experience, PB-DK's comment applies to most of occupied Europe. Some people did what they could to help, some did what they could to make money, some did what they could to survive, and some did all of the above.

Part 4: “Once neutral always neutral”

July 18
The foreign ministry

Secretary: “Sir, we have received news from our man in Madrid that there has been a military coup in Spain! Rumours of clashes between different factions of the Spanish army have spread throughout the peninsula. Some even say that general Franco, of whom we know very little, has established a new nationalist government. But for the moment sir, this is just rumours.”

Munch: “Hmmm... As we do not have any commercial relations with the Republic of Spain I do not see a reason to intervene. Has the British government reacted to these news yet? Or the Germans?”

Secretary: “No sir, but, if I may say so, the Germans and the Italians will probably support these rebels in order to tip the balance in favour of the fascist movement in the Mediterranean region!”

Munch: “You are undoubtedly right on that. But we are not in a position where we can take a side, we have to maintain our neutrality in this situation!”

Secretary: “You mean that we should do nothing sir?”

Munch: “Yes, perhaps you should ask Mr. Scavenius (former Minister of Foreign Affairs, who kept Denmark neutral during WWI) if you doubt my reasons, I am sure that he will assure you the necessity of staying neutral when the European powers start messing around!”

Secretary: “Yes sir, sorry sir.”

(During the next week the Germans and Italians decided to support the fascist coup in Spain. The Soviet Union chose to support the Republic, while the British and French decided to stay neutral. Approximately 550 Danes (of which 200 were communists) joined the “International Brigade” and fought on the Republic's side.)

July 23
A white peace is signed between Nationalist China and the Guangxi Clique. It now seems that peace will finally find it's way to Asia.

August 3
The Japanese ambassador in Copenhagen announces that the Japanese Empire has entered a military alliance with Manchukuo in order to defend the the borders of Manchukuo from Soviet attacks.

September 28
As the Spanish civil war enters its second month and more and more Danes join the “international brigade”, a fierce debate springs up in the newspapers. Members of “det Danske Kommunistiske Parti” (The Danish Communists Party) argues that to defend democracy and keep the fascist movement at bay, Denmark must intervene and support The Republic of Spain both economically and by sending troops and equipment to suppress the rebellion. Today (September 28.) Hjalmar Rechnitzer (Chief of Navy) have in the newspapers “Socialdemokraten” and “Berlingske Tidende” said that he agrees with “det Danske Kommunist Parti”, and suggest that we immediately ban all trade with German and Italian firms, and start arming an expeditionary force, which should be shipped to Spain in order to aid the Spanish government. Following this statement he has been called to Stauning's home at Kanslergade 10.

Meeting at Kanslersgade 10.
Present: Stauning (PM)
Rechnitzer (CoN)
Munch (FM)
Andersen (AM)

Stauning: “I have called you here today because of the recent disagreements regarding the policies made by this government. I cannot tolerate that members of my staff discuss this in the public. You must understand Mr. Rechnitzer that as Chief of Navy you may not, and I repeat, you may not, discuss the policy of this government. All you have to do is follow your instructions and obey orders!

Why have you made this sudden change in behaviour? A behaviour that does not fit a Chief of The Royal Navy! It was due to your professional attitude that you were promoted to this office in '32 you know...”

Rechnitzer: “I humbly apologize for my lack of professionalism sir. It was not my intention to bring this government into disrepute, but I feel that we should help the Spanish in their struggle against fascism.”

Stauning: “Your apologies are accepted, but I warn you. If you continues your attacks on our policies I must sack you!”

Rechnitzer: “I fully understand.”

Andersen: “I must though admit that Mr. Rechnitzer is right! We should stop all our trades with the Germans and Italians and forbid the selling of their goods in Danish stores if they continue to support the Spanish rebels!”

Stauning: “Munch, as minister of foreign affairs what is your opinion on this... will it hurt our aim at staying neutral in this conflict?”

Munch: “It would not be clever to do this. At the moment we are not ready to defend ourself if the Germans should consider it a declaration of war.”

Stauning: “Well, you are as all ways right. We will do as it was decided on July 18. and stay neutral.”

Good luck as Denmark! Though I agree with my friend Semi-Lobster. Build up some IC in Iceland. It's always good to be prepared!
