After yesterday's patch, CK2 has not been able to run. When I begin the game, I get through about two seconds of black-screen before it reverts to my desktop with the message "CK2 has stopped working".

My DirectX, .NET framework, and lua51.dll are all in check. I've tried running ck2.exe and ck2game.exe and neither work.
My system was running the game fine earlier. The OS is Windows 7.

Can anyone help?

I have the Dynasty Shields and Mongol Faces DLC .

Uninstall it from Steam. Copy away any valued save games then manually delete the CK2 files and directories under both the Steam and MyDocuments folders. Then re-install from Steam, and see how you go.

Same happens to me.
Tried re-installing. No results.
Tried also the number 6 from "Known Issues and Solutions to them".
6. The game does not start (Steam version): Right click steamapps/common/crusader kings 2/ck2.exe, set compatibility to run in 640 X 480, then start from this .exe. Adjust your resolution through the in-game options and exit the game. Remove the check from 640 X 480 box and start the game from steam library.
No Results.

Can anyone help?

please post a dxdiag.txt (you can delete everything after the "Sound devices" section for brevity), settings.txt, system.log and error.log files (you'll need to rename the .log files to .txt to upload). Also open setup.log, search for "checksum", and paste that line only in here.

Was this problem fixed? I haven't played CK2 in a few weeks and all of a sudden it doesn't work anymore...

Where do I find the files you need and how do I post them to the forums?

I don't know whether these people fixed their problem, as they never responded.

You should follow the instructions in post #2 above, only if that doesn't work should you need to post the log files.

Andrew, just to let you know:

Im having the same problem of the OP (crash to desktop on start-up). But in my case, this started to happen after I stopped playing in my 40" 1980x1050 resolution TV and got back to my room pc with a 22" 1440-900 res. Since then I can only play on the TV, if I try it on my monitor it crashes.

Maybe this helps somehow with the problem. (I think it may be related to resolution changes)

I installed the game in mi MacBook Pro, running Windows 7 in a boot Camp partition.
When I am at home I play with the mac connected into a 27" display. The game runs just fine.
When I try to run the game without the display it crashes with the "CK2 has stopped working" message.
I tried: 6. With no succes.

Did this:
7. If you get black flags:
Go to Documents/Paradox Interactive/Crusader Kings II. In there, delete the folder called "gfx". After that, edit settings.txt.
Change the following settings to:

Code:
size=
{
x=1024
y=768
}
fullScreen=no

And it worked...
