Steam version HOI2 complete. loading crash

Please somebody help
I'm going round in circles with HOI2
the game crashes at the end of the loading screen
I purchased the game from steam, so it's a download! I even downloaded
the 1.3a official patch though I'm sure steam does this but still no joy.
the game is the complete set with doomsday. My specs are.

Try and rename avi folder to avi.old
