I've heard you're planning an upgrade to Stellar Maps that would allow us to create maps of individual star systems. Do you have any thoughts on if/when it'll be released?

This sounds like a feature that could get a lot of mileage in my next Stellaris story and I'd love to try it out. (I'm currently running v0.10.3 of Stellar Maps)
I tentatively plan to release 0.12, which has map modes and the first draft of system maps, when Cosmic Storms releases. Hopefully first day (ie September 10) but maybe shortly after.

If you're feeling adventurous (here be bugs), you can download an in-development build here: https://github.com/MichaelMakesGames/stellarmaps/actions/workflows/debug-build.yml
Click the latest (top) run, then download the "artifact" at the bottom of the page.
EDIT: note that you'll need to create a GitHub account if you don't have one

That would be absolutely brilliant. The battles inside my aar can be very "regional", up to a planet and a another could take place on not so far in the same system.

Viewing maps of multiple systems at once will not be in the next release, but imagine the possibilities for showing fleet movements within a small cluster, or a detailed map of a sector (apologies for imgur, but forum upload was not working)
And just like that, the divine will smiles upon us all. Needless to say I would use this a lot.

My new Stellaris Story is definitely going to be using this new feature. Might even delay the first chapter by a few days so I get more time to experiment with it.

To be clear: the next release will contain single-system maps, but not multi-system. You would need to manually stitch together multiple single-system maps for now. Just want to make sure you're not waiting for something that isn't coming :) yet ;)

the next release will contain single-system maps
Honestly, just getting this in the next update could revolutionize The Forgotten War. I'm already thinking of ways to modify single-system maps in a photo editor so that my readers can track the movements of both the Hero Ship and Villain Ship through a star system.

I'm excited to see what you and others do with them. I think the feature will really shine when used as the backdrop for additional editing like that. There's both PNG export and SVG export if you prefer working with vector graphics.

If you think of any features that could improve the export+edit workflow, let me know!

v0.12 is released!
Map modes
Legends
Occupation
System maps
+ much more (full changelog on github)

This is EXACTLY what I needed for Unsung Paragons!

You've elevated my new Stellaris story to another level. Much obliged and many thanks. :D

Time to celebrate, I also updated (for the who knows how many times) my own aar related custom mod and literally scrapped two chapters to start again and looks like it's the perfect time, yay.

First of all, love this. My brain goes very happy now that I can make good looking maps of my stellaris campaigns. I do have one suggestion for a feature. I don't know how difficult it would be to do this, but I would be very happy if we could select a transparent background. You could then put the map as an overlay on an image of an actual IRL galaxy for example. If this ain't possible, I don't mind because this is already amazing, but I would very much to see it added.

Thanks! Yeah, that's something I want to add. I'll be improving the export controls in v0.13 and/or v0.14 (the next 2 releases).

In the meantime, if you don't open the export menu, but instead just right-click the map and select "copy image" or "save image as", that only copies/saves the foreground. That's not really an intended feature, just a happy accident. There are no controls for size/resolution, it'll just be what you see on screen (with no background).

Alternatively, you can export as SVG and then use an SVG editor such as Inkscape to remove the background

Just wanted to say that I love this, as someone who loves making timelapses and seeing the progress of my game, both this and dashboard/stellaru are must haves for me in my game, can't wait to see how this tool evolves!

I'm laying the groundwork for built-in support for timelapses: run in the background while you play, automatically making backups/snapshots, so you can then generate gifs/etc using any style or map mode you want. You can do all that today but it's quite manual/tedious

Recently decided to get the newest version, and for some reason it looks like the Mac code is corrupted/damaged (gotta love MacOS!). This goes all the way back to v0.11.x, after which (v0.10.3) it claims that it "cannot verify that the application is not malware" (despite being the exact same version that I had that it let me download without trouble). It's been a little while since I've even so much as booted up Stellaris, but this new stuff is too neat to ignore. It'll probably be a little while yet until I start playing Stellaris again, so it's very not much a priority.

They just keep on locking things down more and more. As far as I can tell, the fix for this is probably "code signing" the application. But to do that I need to generate a code signing certificate... which I can only do from a Mac... which I don't have.

2 options:
  • wait and pray. For next release, I've done a major version upgrade to the library that "packages" the app, so perhaps that'll fix the Mac issue
    • you could try downloading the latest debug build here which already has those changes (click the latest/top row, then scroll down and download the appropriate "artifact"; you need to login to / signup for Github)
  • I could help set things up to build the application from source code on your own computer
