I am playing the IGC for the first time... and, being a silly Norwegian, I'm playing as "Free Norway". Right. I find that I'm a vassal of Denmark. Fair enough, as Norway by 1492 was exactly that. However, having broken the alliance with Denmark, declared war on Sweden (taking a whipping, but managing to win one province, strangely enough), I'd like to get rid of that pesky Danish king. But how? The year's 1503 or so... Is there a time limit for being a vassall? Should I DoW the Danes? Or should I just say... "Well, all right Mr. King, you win, annex us then!"?

Denmark's vassalisation of Norway expires May 17th, 1600. You can end it earlier than that if you choose, by declaring war on Denmark. :D

Thanks! Will do... although my fleet of 3 ships could be in for a hard time...

But anything to keep Norway free! :)

(Now people probably understand why Norway twice voted "No!" to the European Union... we're a sort of masochistically proud people...)

By the way, how stupid am I to start out as a vassal country? Anyone else in this category of self-punishing nitwits?

Well, I don't really mind being a vassal. I usually end it in the first 5 years or so :D
Take Eire, Sweden, Genoa by example

Sweden, naturally. 50% of annual income to Denmark... for a first couple of years, then DoW and get these damn Danes off my back, also gaining Skane.

I've seen the computer countries "quit" being a vassal without declaring war. How can a human player?

Wait for the expiry date. (The vassalisations which pre-exist in 1492 all have expiry dates, unlike those you create during the campaign.) In the above case, that's 108 years into the game and most people don't want to wait that long :D

OK, so besides waiting for the expiration or DOWing the country you are vassal to there is no way to get out of vassalization?

I wanted to play as Brittany once. DOWing France is suicide. Growth is too slow with the cash drain. Is the best thing to do just edit the save file?

If u don't have ethical problems with that :D France will try and get u eventually anyway. Brittany are French core provinces after all. Low chance on that when ur their vassal ;)

IIRC correctly Brittany lasted 24 years into the campaign's time period, and for the remaining 276 years was part of France. It's hardly surprising then that they don't do too well :D
