Ever since the 1.5.5 beta and the latest patch (1.5.9), the game looks like this whenever I launch. Sometimes it crashes on startup, and sometimes the main menu splash screen "shows" but without any menu.

I own all DLCs and am using Mac OS Sonoma 14.1.1

Steps to reproduce

Run Victoria 3 version 1.5.9 on Mac OS Sonoma 14.1.1

If your model of Mac only has an Intel video system, that is probably the cause of your problem. This game now only usesw Vulkan as a renderer, not openGL any longer. And Vulkan does not run well or in some cases at all on Intel video Macs. FYI this game has never been supported on that hardware platform since release, so really it's a matter of luck that it ever worked!

If that is the situation, all you can do is revert to the previous game version 1.4.2 in the Steam betas tab for the game. Or play on any other machine you have access to with supported hardware.

If however that is not the case - ie that your Mac has AMD or Apple Silicon video - that's a different matter; let us know here and we'll look into your case more closely.

I see, so there is no way I can launch the game with OpenGL without reverting versions?

That is correct, openGL is no longer supported in this game or CK3.

But to emphasize, the root of the problem is the Intel video hardware, which was never supported in either game under MacOS.

To clarify, OpenGL was never supported for Victoria 3. The game shipped with MoltenVK and there was no change in renderers between patch 1.4.2 and 1.5.x. If the game used to work on that Mac system, but no longer does, it's not a matter of OpenGL to Vulkan switch (it was only a thing in CK3).
