I realised that I didn't have QT as a startup item. I uninstalled QT completely, just in case, and nothing happened. I fiddled around with various sound options, and it still hasn't made a difference. I'm at a loss as to what's causing it now.

As I say, strangely, it only happens to the music and sound FX in Pharaoh and The Sims. They must have something in common on my system, or just generally, but I don't know what it is. :(

I've read up on this crackling problem, and generally, from what I've gathered, It has been a common problem for users of VIA chipsets and Soundblaster Live! cards - which is my situation. A man called George Breese has made a patch to solve the problem:

I intend to see if it works, and will report back.

Yes please let us know if this works.

I downloaded it, installed the patch, and now both The Sims and Pharaoh are working like a dream. :) As I say though, it is only for my specific problem - The Soundblaster Live!/VIA conflict one - and isn't a cure-all for this specific problem - if the person in question doesn't have VIA and Soundblaster Live!, then it's probably something else.

Good to know, but did you have the problem with EU2? and did it solve that as well?

No, I didn't have that problem with EU II. I only had the problem with The Sims and Pharaoh. The sound problems I had with EU II were solved in other threads just down the page, if you want to look.

Good info none the less, thanks for looking into it.
