This weekend I just released my second ever mod, first ever decently big one. The idea was given to me as a viewer of one of my favorite Twitch streamers, CharliePryor. He often incorporates his viewers into his games by renaming characters after us... but in Surviving Mars, after having done so, the colonist quickly disappears into the mob, never to be seen again... the disappointment in discovering that one of us had died - and we never had a clue! - was rather profound.

As a result, I desire to bring our colonists to life a bit... to give them a personality and to help you care about them on an individual basis. This is going to happen in two parts... I hope to release the 2nd part toward the end of this week or early next, but the first part is available today.

Neighborhood Watch is a new mod which allows you to:
  1. Declare a colonist a VIP.
  2. View basic statistics about that colonist (name, age, dome, workplace, specialization)
  3. View 5 VIPs info at once and if you choose, to zoom your camera in on each one individually with just one click.
  4. Informs you when a VIP dies, removes them from the VIP list and adds them to the list of Honored Fallen.
  5. Allows you to view that list of the Honored Fallen at will.
  6. The notification that governs your access to the VIP list appears on each new Sol, as well as any time you land a rocket, allowing for very regular access, while not 100% dominating the notifications.
Lastly, if you accidentally added a colonist as a VIP somehow, it is also possible to remove them from that status... and of course, to clear out each of the lists in order to begin a new playthrough.

I'm really proud of this mod. While I wrote one other previously (Tech Researched Popup), it was just 37 lines of code, and most of it was rewritten by another (highly skilled!) modder before release. This, however, is my own creation. My first ever real mod! I hope y'all enjoy! :)

Now that depends on how you play your game now, doesn't it?

If you want to rename your colonists, keep track of where they end up, know where they're living and working, and be alerted when they die... then yeah, it offers a great deal in terms of gameplay! :p
