I ran into a weird combat bug today.
Summary:
I had a 5.6k stack up against an AI 6.7k stack and after a few seconds of normal fighting, the fleets split apart and then stayed apart. Neither of the fleets could hit each other at that range so they just both sat there, staring at each other.
I tried to fix this by sending a second fleet to intercept their fleet. When I click on them to attack, however, my fleet would ignore their fleet and just move to combine with my fleet. Combat remained stuck until the war ended.
Long Description:
After a number of successful wars, I found myself in another one. After a series of raiding campaigns, my fleet, Fleet A, entered another puny system filled with frightened puny fools that dared oppose me. As I moved towards a mining base near the center of the map, a large enemy fleet warps in (my ships are hyperdrive) at the bottom right. Although I tried to pull back, my fleet enters combat with the mining base. Before I can destroy the base, the enemy fleet comes into range.
The fleets exchange a little bit of long range fire, but for some reason, only the enemy corvettes approach my fleet; their destroyers/cruisers/battleships are staying at a distance. My fleet, for whatever reason, decided to hang out near the star, waiting for the corvettes to get closer. At long range, however, the corvettes start to slow down and come to a stop. My fleet and the corvettes exchange fire using only long range attacks and the corvettes are quickly destroyed.
At this point, my fleet starts to group up and bundle up near the star. Their fleet of 2 battleships and 3 cruisers stayed put about midway between the star and the edge of the system. The fleets, however, were still in "combat." To exacerbate this, I could not retreat because my Admiral had the "Unyielding" trait.
Strangely, this bug happened in a second battle just afterward. I was able to fix this, however, by sending a second fleet in a flanking maneuver where I was able to crush the enemy fleet. I attempted to do the same strategy with the first time this happened, but when I send my second fleet to engage the enemy, they would, instead, try to get closer to where my Fleet A was located and in turn, also get stuck.
The fleets remained stuck until the end of the war.
