The only thing i can kill with them are convoys and occasional DDs.

I had 25, yes 25 submarines in a sea province for 1 entire year and the AI kept engaging it with the same 10 submarine fleet over and over. They kept firing at each other, then the AI would simply disengage with no losses and damage taken. How can they magically avoid torpedoes?

Also how can a fleet with 5 old CVs and 6 old DDs defeat 30 SS-9s(with all SS techs researched) commanded by a skill 5 seawolf vice-admiral by staying at 200 km? Its like they were able to detect where all the SS-9s were and stay out of range accordingly while fighting a running battle.

Hi,

Previous complaints have generally been that the SS units are overpowered. As far as the SS/SS combat it is designed to be very ineffective. Historically very few submarines were actually sunk by other submarines and this was not the role they were expected to play. Tended to be accidental encounters for the most part. As far as the CV remaining out of range this isn't intentional. But CV units generally control battle range so it's not suprising. Hopefully we can tone this down for future releases.

Wasnt that because submarines were out convoy raiding and attakcing surface ships and had very poor abilities to detect other submarines?

Right now in game the submarines ARE bumping into each other and trading shots, but they all keep missing and can just disengage with any penalties. In one year i achieved more sub vs sub contacts than the whole of WW2 combined and yet achieved zero kills while WW2 actually managed a couple.

I think that sub combat in CORE actually works pretty well.

Go read Blue Emu's "Are Submarines Worthless?" thread for a pretty compelling story using (Vanilla) parameters.

I was able to destroy and keep the British convoy network suppressed for 3 years, easy. Just don't group alot of subs together, space them over a very wide number of sea zones on very long missions (18 monthsish) and watch the convoys sink.

Since the naval combat system favors decisive battles rather than lucky shots, I'm not sure we'll ever get subs doing what they historically did. You basically get to pick which flavor of bad you want.

Having the subs not damage each other at all isn't great, but having sub fleets fight battles of annihilation against each other would be much, much worse.

I agree with you AlanC9. My conclusion is that since we don't have the possibility of something like "Critical hits" its a question of toning it as good as it gets. I love sub warfare in HoI and I think CORE are near reaching "as good as it gets", apart from the easy killed DD thing.

On my finetoning wishlist is:
  • The DD thingi
  • Longer range for some types (Like GER IXD and such) - can Armageddon brigades be attached to subs to modify range for some?
  • Possibility to close range with CV:s
  • More doctrines (perhaps range/underway replenishment, AA, construktion quality/quantity, short/long training) But I guess there is no room for it in the tree.

He's back?

Yes

Sorry no, subs can't have brigades. I'll leave the other naval questions for MateDow since he's in the middle of developing the revised naval stuff.

Dam!
There goes a lot of posibilities and flexibility.

*Goes back to chase AI Imperial Japaneese Fleet with my obsolete lvl 1 subs.

Do subs work in a combined arms fleet, or are they just stuck hopelessly out of range?
Hopelessly out of range most of the time. Battles are usually fought at the extreme range of the ship with the greatest gunnery range. It is possible for a fleet with subs to engage close enough for the subs to get shots off, but it's highly rare and you shouldn't count on it happening more than once or twice in a game. If you want your subs to have a better chance at attacking, keep them separate from your other vessels.
