Currently the religion trait is a 'perk' which gives a bonus to base morale. That's all well and good, but also not particularly interesting.

I suggest changing the religion perk into a quirk, and also adding a church building (or more neutrally a "temple"), with roughly the following effects:

Church provides comfort and / or sanity boost (relaxation?) to religious visitors. It also creates a chance of spreading the religion quirk to other people in the dome (whether residing or visiting), and the chance of spreading the religion quirk goes up for people whose morale is low.

The quirk itself should have a negative effect in addition to providing the boost to morale and suicide protection. The idea for a negative effect that I've come up with so far is that the pop takes a hit to sanity if they are unable to visit a church, and also has a malus to working in a research job.

Because of the malus to research productivity it would be bad for the trait to spread to every pop. However, it's quite a beneficial trait for non-research working pops (provided they have access to a church). The challenge is to keep the trait contained within Domes that don't have science jobs.
