I didn't see a suggestion thread so I decided to make one.

First suggestion: Get an official suggestion thread. P

In all serious though, I was feeling a bit creative today and thought up the idea of a merchant republic squirreled away in Corsica. My thinking was how it would be nice to have someone on the map that sought to recreate a Republican Rome.

This the bloodline I came up with and idea of what the Patrician families might look like:

Junii Bruti (or Bruti Albinus)

Fathers of the Republic; that is the name given to your illustrious family. When the kings of Rome sought to oppress and cast aside the laws of the senate, it was your ancestor that rose up and drove them out. Because of Marcus Junius Brutus, the office of consul became almost a tradition for your family. When the dictator, Julius Caesar sought to destroy and mangle the great Republic, it was your ancestor who stood by his families’ honour and the senate, striking down his friend. Even though the act was for nothing and your family was forced to flee across the sea to the island of Corsica, your ancestors still held within them the fires of liberty and Republicanism.

When Clodius Albinus rose up for the Republic, many sons of Bruti flocked to his banner. When the hope of the SPQR was trampled by Sarmatian cavalry at the field of Londinium, it was your house that smuggled the family of Albinus to safety. Together your families made a pact to take Rome from its dictators and avenge the death of Clodius Albinus and bring honour to all Romans once more. Now as the world stands on the precipice of chaos, your family motto holds truer than ever before: “Cupiditas victoriam; victoriae, de mundo” (Desire brings victory; victory, the world)

Albinus (or Bruti Albinus)

House descended from Clodius Albinus, possibly now related to Junii Bruti. (possibly just merge this with above and have a Jewish or Christian patrician?)

- Corsican family

Rich Corsicans who rather have all these barbarians and Romans go away.

- Lombard family

Lombards that settled in Corsica, seek to open it to more settlers.

- Romunus family

Descended from an exiled family during imperial times, not interested in restoring the SPQR.

Obviously you are free to tell me how terrible of an idea it is, or how amazing. :p

You might want to post this on either the main LI thread or the map thread so that Futuregary gets a look at it. I for one believe it might be a good idea; with the removal of the vassal republic of Venice there's an odd lack of republics in Italy ( unless you consider the S·P·Q·R a republic at this point, which it kinda is, but not exactly ), and a remnant republic of hardliners (let's call them, optimates) would be perfect there.

It might have to be a Sardinia though, there's a Roman culture, Graeco-Roman religion duchy there that could be transformed into a republic.

I liked the Venetian republic. I thought of it as the Exiled Roman Republic in the dry island of Venetia.

Is there a reason Venice isn't a republic? I don't mind where the republic would be, I picked Corsica because historically that was where a few exiles of the OTL WRE ended up (such as christians). Sardinia is just as good. You could replace the Lombards with a Vandal family if you wanted.

As a side note, I don't see this being an old republic, something more that arose after the Vandals were defeated and began after the ERE failed to truly hold the island.

That too!

Futuregary stated his reason for removing Venice but I've forgotten it yet again; but I believe it was due to the ruling family at the Veneto successfully defending it from Hunnic and Germanic invaders. Since Venice was founded by refugees fleeing from the nearby lands from the invaders, in LI it's still some backyard village.

That could be really interesting, we could have various families representing the influence of the Catholic SPQR, the Solar-Imperial Imperium Romanum (or Basileia Rhomaion, pick your poison), the Arian Vandals and native Sardinians represented by Graeco-Roman religion Romans.

On that note, we should really start dotting the rest of republics with various families representing influences from nearby cultures and religions.

That's what I was thinking, I alway liked the idea of a very diverse republic that was constantly being dragged in different directions and at war with itself.

As for the make up my idea was:

The Bruti; Romanus, graeco-roman
Possibly Albinus same as above (although they could be combined)
Vandal, Arian
Sardinian, graeco-roman (or something else?)
Exile Romanus, christian?
And if Bruti Albinus; Greek/Rhomanoi, christian/neoplatonic?

The only religions I can't see being a thing (because the Bruti and Albinus wouldn't stand it); is Imperial Cult (why worship dead emperors?), Solar-Imperial (no better than the cult but for those eastern emperors) and Catholic (the Pope is just another brand of dictator looking to rule Rome).
