Hi,

I heard quill18 say in his Tutorial on YouTube that multiple copies of the same building (like research labs) within the same dome will cause diminished returns for each duplicate building. It also says so in the Wiki.

However, I find no reference to this in the ingame encyclopedia nor in the build menu, the building description or the information screen when selecting the building and mousing over the building information panel. But maybe I am overlooking information on this ingame.

Is this actually a thing? Or was this a feature of earlier versions and has it been taken out since release?

Within the same dome, no. But research labs do have diminishing returns colony-wide.

The most efficient research setup would be one explorer, one research lab, one science center, etc. Add a second and you only get 60% more, not 100%, a third and only 40% (or whatever; representative numbers).

These diminishing returns are represented in game as "Collaboration Losses" whenever you click on any production building for which they're relevant, which is mostly just science producers.

Seems bugged in that case barefoot. I built 4 research labs in different domes and had no collaboration losses.

You sure? If you legitimately don't, then bug report it with screenshots, but here's a screenshot of where to find it.

Yes. This is from my first game with 5 domes, 4 of them having Science labs.

Are you sure it's supposed to give a loss for several labs if they are in different domes?

Thanks for this!

So, should I deduct the Collaboration Loss amount from the Daily Research amount to get a sense of the actual Research or is the Collaboration Loss number the net research amount produced from this building?

The research numbers in the tech tree screen toward the right account for all collaboration losses, and are the correct total research.

For an individual research facility, correct. You'd subtract the collaboration loss from the daily research to get the actual research being produced by that facility (and thus a sense for whether building more of that same type is worthwhile).

So far I've been finding that five or so research labs is about all that's worth it. That plus a research center and I've blown through most of the tech tree and researched one or two Wonders by Sol 100.
