After just a couple of months laying siege to it I capture Kurland from its unrightful owners, Courland. I had some good advice to leave the siege to Mecklenburg so that they could annex it and I could then diplo annex them reducing my BB score. Unfortunately it came too late. I had already annexed Courland. One more province is crossed off the goal list.
Let it not be forgotten that in vanilla FtG, as in EU2, Sweden gets a lot of leaders at this time.
My ally moves onto Livland to reinforce the siege currently led by England in that province. I will wait til it progresses a bit and then send in a leader to make sure that Sweden gets what it deserves, another Baltic province. Danzig has fallen to Gustav while Poland has a small measure of success against Brandenburg taking Prussia.
With Livland under siege and Danzig and Kurland controlled or owned I have all the provinces I want from this war more or less where I want them. It is time to rack up some warscore to take the pricey CoT in Danzig in a peace deal. What better way to do that than taking Warsaw?
With only a few minor skirmishes by the broken Polish I soon take Warsaw and Livland. The Polish armies appear to be broken and scattered. The only sizable remnants not even enough to progress the siege in Kurland. Poland has sued for a white peace with Brandenburg in order to focus on me.
This screenshot shows just how nice it is to have a good leader with some cannons when laying siege.
But focussing on me is something the Polish AI will struggle to turn into positive results. Although they eventually manage to scrape together a siege force the northern Swedish army, with its nice leader, is able to displace them swiftly.
In a little distraction from the rather bloody and cold Baltic wars I find that I am able to see several nice Caribbean provinces ripe for colonisation. I dispatch a colonist for Curacao and meet with success immediately.
With their army beaten, capital and CoT under Swedish control there is little left for Poland to do but come limping to me offering a peace deal. I accept it is exactly what I want plus 50 ducats.
And with the conclusion of the second war of the Baltic I am now three more provinces closer to my goal. The Baltic coast is looking tidy and there should be no prizes for guessing who my eyes are now looking to for more provinces.....
All in all this war was quite a fun one. A few simultaneous invasions, a few battles and some swift sieges. It wasn't really a challenge, in fact it wasn't a challenge at all. I'm not so worried about that though since at this stage in the game Sweden is meant to be very strong and Poland on the decline. They should have been able to put up more resistance to be true to history but in terms of game mechanics they don't really have a chance. Sweden has much better soldiers and much better leaders. At least the AI wasn't incompetent in this war. Poland did actually manage to capture Mecklenburg.
Poland in Mecklenburg towards the end of the war
Nor did they move all their armies around piecemeal to be picked off. But in the end that just isn't enough to beat Sweden. I was impressed again by Mecklenburg who launched a competent amphibious landing in Kurland and then went on to lay siege to Polish provinces in a smart manner.
