I was watching mare nostrum stream and ddrjake said that anyone who is willing to suggest national ideas for nations who have generic ideas is welcome.

So first of all i know that Syria is not important in the game and it have the Arabian ideas even tho in 5 out of 10 games i see Syria getting independence for brief amount of time but usually get conquered by Ottomans.

Currently Syria have Arabian ideas which you can read here.

The Arabian ideas feel more suited for Arabian peninsula than for a nation on the Mediterranean for example the Indian ocean trade idea or the Arabian coffee.

What i suggest is the following:

Traditions: Tolerance of Heretics +3 Yearly Prestige +1

The Holy Land: +15% Accepted Culture Threshold
Our land is holy and sacred by many faiths and cultures and this has taught us to accept everyone.

Cradle Of Civilization: -10% Technology Cost
Long was the fertile crescent the home of many great civilizations that spread its culture and customs to its neighbors and we shall make our country the center of knowledge it was once.

Hajj Caravans: +10% Trade Efficiency
Syria is the main route to Mecca, the holy city of Islam, every year many Hajj caravans stops in our lands to get ready to pass the desert and its our duty to make sure they get well supplied for their journey.

Damascus Steel: 10% Goods Produced
Damascus swords are well known across the world, it played big role in the crusades and many blacksmiths tried to copy it but without success, even Janghiz Khan took thousands of Syrian blacksmiths to the east to produce these swords.

Reform our Defenses
:+10% Fort Defense -10% Fort Maintenance
Many empires have conquered us and many great armies have marched through our lands, By constructing more forts we can secure our borders and defend our people.

Syrian Merchants: +1 Merchant
The crusaders had many trading posts on all the Syrian coast, they are gone now but we maintained our relations with Europeans and by trading with the Italian states we can ensure great profit as the bridge to Europe.

Orientalists: -10% Adviser Cost
Many European scholars who are interested in our history and culture are visiting us for research purposes, by making it easier and more acceptable for them to work we can get some European advice.

Ambition: National manpower modifier +25%

the bonuses might be strong or not that good so feel free to balance them if they ever get implemented into the game which i hope.

i will try to make Iraqi national ideas and Lebanese if they devs are interested into making every nation with its unique ideas.

Edit: not sure if its a good idea to replace +10% goods produced modifier with 5% discipline or 10% morale of armies.

dubious how relevant this was in 1444 in particular after syria was ransacked by Timur

this is true, the idea can be moved down to 4th slot however syria was always a center of knowledge for muslims and christians but of course it had better times, perhaps it can be -5% instead of -10% or replaced with idea cost reduction.

Think idea reduction might be better I would also be a good idea to referance the religous schools that made up the intellectual centra of Syria and were restored under ottoman rule

Instead of Strategic location consider calling it Hajj Caravans something that was an important part of Syria and has more personality to it.

Reform defenses should perhaps give: +10% Fort defense and -10% Fort maintenance

Wait shouldn't Damascus steel give some military bonus instead of goods produced? If I remember right they weren't so popular because they look nice but because they(the swords) were fearsome weapons of mass destruction

WMD’s are atomar, biological or chemical - anything else is a misnomer. However it would be funny if Syria would be invaded by the US to find the WMD’s of Iraq there and they would turn out to be a collection of damascene steel knifes...

Damascene steel was dependent on the import of steel ingots from southern India so without trade there would be none

OK but to deny Syria a military bonus from Damascus swords is like saying Russia should get improved goods production instead of force limit

Wouldn't accepted culture threshold be useless for most games since you don't want to accept a culture that isn't big in your nation?

Also the tech cost reduction seems out of place. Otherwise they all seem good to me.

What I would change the tech cost reduction to is:

Hardy Warriors: -20% Attrition suffered

Long have we fought for other countries in other lands. Let us use the knowledge of these different terrains to our advantage.
