what are the System Requirements for a MP game.
you should put this in the System Requirements thread so people dont have to ask.

Should be the same. ;)

how do i check what speed mine is.
win xp
modem is buit in to the computer
when i check the status icon in the buttem right it says 31.2k but thats when i was just typeing this because it had 28k about 30min ago

The invoice you got should tell you.

However if it is a relatively new computer chances are VERY good that it is a 56K modem. That is pretty much all they make now for regular dial up modems.

That's true, but keep in mind that the actual speed you can get out of a 56k6 modem depends on your phone company and the local loop line connection quality.

If your phone company digitizes the signal (like ours does, at 64 kHz), then the best speed you can get will never exceed the sample rate divided by two. (which, in the case of our phone company would be 32kbit/sec)

Yes one rarely get 56K out of a 56K modem. :)
Then again, I rarely get 3meg out of my 3meg modem. ;)

so it whould be a good idea to get a faster modem then.
what whould be the faster modem that you dont need a super fast phone lind because i cant get it where i live and how much

Basically if you cannot get DSL (High Speed Phone line) or a Cable modem, then 56K is the best you can do.

Or switch from analog (POTS) to ISDN. With ISDN you get 64Kbit line speed (or 56Kbit you happen to live in the US), which effectively makes it twice as fast as any analog modem.

And, as an added bonus (much like xDSL or cable), you still have a free phone line whenever you are connected to the internet :D

An option if it is available however I got the impression from the earlier post that it was not.

I just traced back, but found no mentioning on possible/impossible of upgrading to ISDN, so I mentioned it as a possible option.

Given the fact that currently the actual linespeed is reported as 31K2 or lower (like 28K), then there is no point in upgrading to a 56K6 modem, as the current modem probably is a 32k6, and the actual linespeed is already lower than the theoretical max throughput of such a linespeed, thus implying that either the phone company's exchange or the line quality of the local loop is the limiting factor here.

Well you could try it, or you could connect two computers directly.

i did try it a few times but it would not work.
well my nan wants a new computer so i might try that when she gets it

Just shows you what tunnelvision can do for you. I never have associated ISDN with a super fast phone line. xDSL, on the other hand ...
