Forgive my ignorance, but can anyone shed some light on the monarchs, or rather monarch of Helvetia.

The monarch never changes, and while I no longer suspect that an immortal is ruling the country, what exactly is the Tagsatzung? Is it a collection of nobles, or some group of Cantons?

I did go brittanica.com but, apart from some basic info about the early Swiss wars, no mention of the strangely oriental sounding commitee.

Ever seen them play football ? ;)

About 10 years ago I think, in either a Cup Winners Cup, or UEFA cup match against Glasgow Rangers (I think) on TV. Unfortunately, the name is far more glamorous than the players performed :(

Actually, the root of the curiosity is a little off topic, but as this is a quiet forum I hope nobody minds. When I was a kid I 'inherited' an old 1973 Roy of The Rovers annual from my older brother, and apart from the comic strips there was a feature on clubs around the world. There was a list of different team, and their badges- even Club Brugges :) However, for reasons, only known to a five year old, I became interested in the Swiss representatives; Grasshopper of Zurich. Well, it progressed into aquiring the Subbuteo version of the team, and following their exploits whenever they had a result in the papers (usualy the fine print of non-British UEFA cup ties)

Although I don't follow the results any more, I do like the new strip, and thanks to the internet it has made it's way into my closet. From childhood, I always thought the team played in green and white, but the new one is blue and white.

If anyone has any links to club info in English I'd be appreciative, as Grasshopper fans in Staten Island are thin on the ground, and the searches on the net bring back languages I can only dream of speaking.

Again, apologies from wandering away from Tagsatzung.

Ah, Club Brugge. Nice :) They played the Grasshoppers too at some point in European competition. Think we won :D Weird team to take an interest in btw ;) Also weird is them not playing in green and white!

Anyway, I suggest u learn German and surf to http://www.gcz.ch/ ;)

Now only one Swiss mystery remains, who named them,....

What do you mean, the name Switzerland or what? I guess it has something to do with a swiss canton named 'Schwyz' - also the shield of that canton is more or less the same as the swiss shield....
