As Prussia I am invading France and my allies the Netherlands go to take Metz, fine and helpful. Problem is that even though my troops arrive 4 days ahead as soon as the Netherlands show up they get control why?

Because they're AI.

Assuming all other factors are equal, the AI will always gain control of a provinces that you're both in.

That's not true, from what I've seen...

It might have something to do with who the "leader" of the alliance is, or if there isn't an alliance, I would guess that the province goes to the owner of the province where the unit came from. That's my observations though. I'm not 100%

I am the leader, my troops came from my country, and their's came from Luxembourg. After several tries I found a workaround, was just curious.

If you occupy or own an adjacent province and the AI doesn't, it'll give it to you, as far as I know that's the first check it makes.

I believe the AI check is the 2nd one. It also checks if one country has a core on the province, but I think that the AI check is the higher one for that.

There may be other factors as well, but the AI check is a very high priority one.

Equal as in? I have 70,000 men there and they have 5,000.

Numbers or who arrived first unfortunately don't mean anything here. The AI will always steal your sieges no matter who got there first or who has the larger army.

Some hints that might help:

When on your way to a siege, don't pass through territory occupied by your ally, if your ally is also at war with the same enemy. (If your ally is not at war with the same enemy as you, there's no problem.) Otherwise your ally will automatically steal your siege even with no troops in that province. Don't even pass through territory being besieged by your ally. When starting a siege, you have to enter the province from a province you control/own. An amphibious assault must be launched from a province you control/own, OR from a neutral province owned by an ally who is not fighting in the war, or from a province owned by a country which has granted you military access and is not fighting in the war.

Try to get your ally to work for you instead of against you - take control of provinces near its armies and on coastlines before it can. Then any of its armies that enter territory you control will plant your flag instead of their own in the provinces they move out to.
