Larys is now Lord Paramount, what is left to obtain? I don't expect he'll be able to fully overthrow the Targaryens but he is not one to remain idle

King’s Landing, The Red Keep

Thud!

The cane slapped hard upon the stones of the keep as Larys Strong knelt before his King.

“As gratitude for your loyalty and devotion to the Crown and the realm in the days of darkness, I name you Master of Whisperers, Larys, of House Strong.”

“I thank you, Your Grace.”

The Clubfoot leaned upon his walking aid as he rose to his feet, and then hobbled to the sidelines of the throne room. The skulls of the great dragons, especially dead Balerion, leered down at him with empty sockets where their eyes ought to have been.

Yet I still have mine, and my eyes have greater worth to the King than all the skulls of all the dead dragons who outlasted the Doom. The Gods curse those of us with limp feet or weak arms, but he curses those with able bodies with foolishness and poor eyes. I shall make them see, before I am done.

It was over the next months that the Clubfoot left the running of Harrenhal to his Castellan, taking the bulk of his staff… and of course his myriad network of agents, and putting them to work within the Red Keep and the capital. House Strong may have apparently been weakened by the death of Lord Lyonel, but Lord Larys ‘Clubfoot’ was more powerful than ever.

He strengthened his friendship with Queen Alicent, and through her he had King Viserys’s trust, having proven the worth of his skills in the manner of the rebellious Lord Grover. That Larys himself had baited that particular dog into biting the King and Queen did not know.

But it was from the Narrow Sea and the Stepstones that news of the next challenge to the realm came, barely a few short weeks after the Clubfoot had settled into his latest prize…

Word from the Clubfoot’s agents travelled quickly, even from beyond the reach of the Iron Throne. Those lords more superstitious believed that the crippled Lord of Harrenhal used some sinister witchery to hear word from across the seas, while those of a more prosaic mind realised that the Clubfoot, for all his body was twisted and crippled, his talents as a spymaster were unrivalled.

So word reached the Red Keep swiftly of Princess Rhaenys’s intentions, well before she had openly announced them.

“Is Prince Daemon behind this ploy as well, perhaps?” King Viserys asked. He always was suspicious of the motives of the Rogue Prince these days, since his conquest of the Stepstones and forging for himself a rival crown.

“No information suggests that, Your Grace,” Larys reported swiftly, “For my part, I suspect the Rogue Prince, while allowing the Princess to use his islands as a base, would rather stay his hand, let the Iron Throne and the rebel princess bleed each other, before striking whomever remains.”

“You do suspect his loyalty then?”

Larys gave a grim, twisted smile. “I suspect EVERYONE’s loyalty, Your Grace. The eyes of the Iron Throne must never sleep nor rest. Nor shall mine.”

Viserys nodded grudgingly. “We owe you our thanks, Lord Clubfoot. You have brought us word of Princess Rhaenys’s ploy, now the Iron Throne must summon it’s banners to war.” He sighed. “Ever since she killed Rhaenyra… my precious child…” he choked up.

“We will avenge her, Your Grace,” Ser Otto Hightower interjected. “House Hightower will stand with the Throne against Rhaenys, and against the machinations of Prince Daemon, such as they are. I am confident the Lords of the Reach will follow our lead.”

House Tyrell was technically the overlord of the Reach, but nobody bothered to challenge this. Everybody knew that Oldtown was the leading force in the south these days, and the Lords of Highgarden would not dare defy their overmighty vassal in this regard.

“The Riverlords, needless to say, will follow as well. House Strong serves the crown as always.” The Clubfoot responded quietly.

None of the others on the Small Council expressed any doubt either. Princess Rhaenys’s coup attempt would find no support there.

“Perhaps Lord Baratheon might be persuaded to back his cousin’s claim to rule. But he might be the only one of the Lord’s Paramount to be suspect.”

“House Baratheon cannot stand against the might of the other Lords Paramount and the Iron Throne alone,” Viserys replied in response to Ser Otto. “He would be foolish to cast his lot in with Rhaenys without the support of the others.”

“Rhaenys herself seems rash enough to launch an assault on the Crown from the Stepstones,” The Clubfoot pointed out, “And without her husband and House Velaryon’s support, she has only whatever ships the Stepstones can produce,” another twisted little smile, “and whatever ones Prince Daemon will doubtless claim she stole from him.”

“Then a closer watch on Lord Baratheon at least,” The King finally conceded,

“As you wish,” The Clubfoot gave a little bow of the head.

“For now, that will suffice, though I doubt very much that with these mighty lords at our back that the others will bestir themselves to support the rebels, and even if they have distaste for you, and none for Rhaenys, they fear Prince Daemon more, we can use that.” Ser Otto knew full well that it was likely the Rogue Prince who styled himself King on the Stepstones who was as much behind the move as Rhaenys herself.

“Then let us ensure they know,” The King grunted, shifted uncomfortably in his seat. He felt older and more brittle these days, even as he knew there were those who feared his wrath, now he rode Tessarion.

The Small Council broke off, dissolving into it’s own constituent parts. As always, the Clubfoot did not cluster into any of the smaller gatherings of lords that formed as they left, but kept his own council, merely suppressing a satisfied smile as he left the Council chambers…

OOC: War arises again, but this time a challenger arises from within the Targaryen Dynasty itself. Rhaenys is coming for the throne she was cheated of, and with her husband exiled to the Wall, it seems Prince Daemon is her chief backer. But how will that play out, and what will Larys do? How many lords might side with her? Let's see!

Thanks for waiting, I know I've been slower paced then usual but my day job is busy these days and I have little time to write. I shall have a new post up on the Karling AAR in the next couple of days as well though, so watch out for that. As always, happy reading!

It looks like a Dance of Dragons might occur after all.

Also, Rhaenys killed Rhaenyra? That's news to me. Why?

Happened right back on page 1 of this thread:)

"But events continued to shape the future of the Seven Kingdoms. Corlys Velaryon, the Sea Snake, smarted at the rejection of the proposal of marriage for his daughter Laena by King Viserys, and instead schemed to receive a different prize. He sought to press his wife, Princess Rhaenys, as the legitimate Princess of Dragonstone, tantamount to declare, though without actually saying so, that the Sea Snake sought to press his wife forward as King Viserys’s heir, despite the King’s express declaration for his daughter, the Princess Rhaenyra.

So that terrible year dragged on in Fire and Blood, as dragons met in combat above Dragonstone Bay. The young Princess Rhaenyra rode Syrax forth to burn the Sea Snake’s fleet… But Princess Rhaenys was in the sky as well, atop Meleys. Whether it was an accident, or the elder Princess deliberately targeted the young child and her dragon, or whether it was some cunning ploy devised via alliance between the Sea Snake and the Rogue Prince Daemon to rid the realm of the heir standing between him and the Iron Throne we will never know, but either way the result was the same. Princess Rhaenyra and her dragon were slain, swallowed by the waves west of Dragonstone, broken within Meleys’s jaws."

In-game it was because she pressed her claim on Dragonstone, which Rhaenyra held. Wasn't much of a fight really, since Rhaenyra's about nine at the time.
