I created an AAR at wordpress today, playing Orkney!

this is the link http://talesfromorkney.wordpress.com/

If you want I will post it here as well, but will take some extra work.

Anyway enjoy this story full of intrigue!!!

The early years

Orkney_earlyyears.gif

Orkney, a group of practically inhabitable Islands where men are men and sheep are very very nervous.

Orkney, Islands where stories about mermaid encounters are as common as intrigues.

Orkney, Isles ruled by nobles with hunchbacks the size of Ward Hill.

Not much more needs to be told, or is there?

Troublesome times in Europe. Dark ages are ahead of us and Orkney, ruled by Hunchback Paul Thorfinsson, is part of the kingdom of Norway.

Orkney has two vassals. Chaithness , ruled by his brother Erlend, and Shetland, ruled by notorious Thorgeir of Shetland.

Orkney itself has lots of rivals surrounding the proud Duchy. The Western Isles, the Kingdom of Scotland and Faeryar. All this must have been a burden to the still unmarried duke of Orkney.

In 1066 Paul Thorfinsson gets married to Helga Grevan.
helga.png
Helga (only 16 years old) is the sister of Gofraith Mearomach, duke of the western Isles. Being a strong diplomat, Helga immediately takes over the role of chancellor. Due to the marriage, a warm and strong friendship between Paul and Gofraith is starting. The marriage seems to pay off in a few ways. Not only does Orkney have a strong diplomat at the court, but one of the rivals now seems to be a friend. In 1067 a daughter is born, named Ingrid.

The duke is ambitious and tries to convince the duchy of Faeryar to make use of the protection offered by Orkney and become a vassal. Faryaer refuses in a way that upsets Paul Thorfinsson greatly.

The year 1069 is marked by disaster. Helga dies in labour of the 2nd child and with her, the child dies as well. Though not historically proven, it is said that the 2nd child was a boy and thus heir of the throne. Paul is beyond himself and doesn’t show his face in public for about six months.

The first thing he does after this period is crucial for the history of the Duchy. He claims the title duke of Faeryar and thus prepares for war against the distant islands. In the mean time he requests a marriage with Gyda Staur, member of the Norwegian court. The king allows the marriage and Gyda, whose first husband literally ate himself to death, makes her first appearance at Orkney, much against the will of Paul’s brother Erlend.

The war of Faeryar starts in 1071. The requested grand mobilization turns out to be a bit disappointing. Both vassals refuse to mobilize their troops. Paul is furious, but ships his troops to attack Faeryar, knowing his liege is willing to send some troops to his aid.

The siege of Faeryar is easy won. During the siege two messages reach the duke. In Chatiness his brother Erlend died a sudden death. Whilst grieving for his brother, word reaches him that Gyda is expecting a child. Immediately doubt clouds his mind whether or not he is the father of this child. Tongues say Thorgeir has made several appearances at Orkney while he was away.

After liberating Faeryar and adding the county to his realm, Paul returns to Orkney. Revenge to Shetland and Chaitness for refusing to mobilize is due.

After the death of his brother, his 3 year old nephew is in charge of the duchy. Paul himself is 2nd in line to rule the Duchy and start making evil plans.

Gyda gives him the son desired, Ragavald. Rumours about the real father of Ragavald fill the court.

In september 1071, Paul has his nephew (Hakan) killed. The murderer is discovered and reveals the name of his master. Paul acts swiftly and claims the title.

The message that Ragavald is indeed not his son reaches him. Paul is bitter and returns to Orkney immediately. It is not sure what happens precisely, but Ragavald will no longer be heir to the throne, leaving the duchy without an heir.

thanks kadvael.

Both nobles mentioned are my friends right now, but indeed my biggest thread as well

LOL, quite funny... :)

Good luck with this. I played Orkney once but I wasn't patient enough...

The early years part II

1072

All seems well in Orkney. The name of Paul Thorfinsson equalizes trust and strength. In the summer of 1072, Smaél Nechta, King of Scotland brings a visit to the islands.

screensave46.png
Allthough not proven, it is believed by modern historians, that Scotland did make a first attempt to convince Orkney to break the ties with Norway. On the other hand, due to the Scottish expansion plans in the northern parts of the british isle, the Scots could use a friend

Even if this is true, the summer visit left Paul Thorfinsson with a friend.

In this case the fall of 1072 brings another good tiding. Harald is born, the 2nd son and first non-bastard thus successor for the house of Orkneyar.

1073
Bjorn Mac Aodha (41 years old) is installed as count of Farnyaer. This well respected and loyal noble is granted the title because of his loyal duty to his liege.
screensave03.png

Though loyal, the ambitions of this noble are huge and his influence on the house of Orknyar is inmense.

Ingrid (doughter of Paul and Helga Grevan is send as Fosterling to the king of Scotland adding to the trust and friendship between the duchy and kingdom.

Alv of Orkney is appointed bishop, when the house of Orkneyar can welcome it’s first foster. Send from the Western Isles, Jorunn joins the court.

In december Gyda gives birth to a daughter Margarete

1074
Bishop Alv dies.
screensave4.png
Only just installed in his position, his death is shadowed by suspicion. Some say his dead is of natural causes, others say this only goes when poisoning is done with herbs. Fact is that Alv annoyed the duke by requesting a bishopric for his own. The result is however, that Orkney is without bishop again. Paganism seems to recover and very often groups of people are found by the ancient Ring of Brodgar. (photo courtesy of Wickypedia)

Another foster makes her entrance from the Western Isles. Gyred joins court.

Meanwhile, the first signs of prosperity spread throughout the duchy and Orkney starts constructing a fishers warf.

1075
screensave7.png
Prosperity spreads, a ‘we love the Duke day’ is organized by the locals.

The Duke is proud of his achievements, which are sighted by the countries neighbours. Due to this fact, Paul Thorfinsson gains lost of prestige.

It is said that even the King of Norway himself was present at the festivities, though no proof of this excists. At the hight of these festivities, Paul grants his bastard son Ragnveld the title ‘Count of Caithness’. The unlucky boy has not much time to enjoy the warm embrace of his ‘father’. Later that year he dies. Gyda overwhelmed with grieve commits suicide and dies the same year. The formal story is that Gyda died in labour though.

This means Paul Thorfinsson finds himself unmarried again, with only one successor in line.

After the death of Ragnveld, Harald, the legitimate heir of the Duchy is granted the title ‘Count of Caithness’.

In august of this year, the Pope calls to arms. the Duke supports the crusade but doesn’t actually participate. Instead he is way to busy making arrangements for his third wedding, this time with Aina Cramshron from the kingdom of Scotland
