Ok here's my specs:

WIN XP SP1 - Fresh install after formatting everything about one week ago.

SB LIVE 1024 - latest drivers from Creative (5.12.01.0244 English)
note: I have tried with both hardware acceleration enabled and fully disabled - with no differance)

DirectX 8.2 (4.08.02.0134)

- The ONLY problem I've had so far (except that damn binkplayer-issue...) is that if I try to start the game with music enabled it just crashes back to desktop. I have tried both with the music on the harddrive and on the CD. Otherwise, as I said, the game runs just fine so far :)

- I have NOT tried it with version 1.0 - just with 1.1

Temporary solution for me: Music disabled... but using WINAMP to play those nice tunes... works fine!

You can say it elsewhere for a while.

You are Suspended for 3 days.
You know very well who I am - I have had words with you before.

One thing you could try is run dxdiag and see if it comes up with anything suspicious for sound hardware. To do this go to Start->Run and type in dxdiag.exe. When the application opens click on the "Sound" tab at the top of the dialog. In the bottom should be any notes about driver compatability, these may indicate a problem with your sound card drivers.

You can test Direct Sound by pushing "Test Direct Sound". This will run you through a series of tests by playing several different sound files. You can also change the hardware acceleration setting here, you may want to try expirementing with several different acceleration settings. If everything here checks out it should rule out a possible hardware problem.

Well never hurts to rule out any possible hardware problem. As a software developer myself I also find it helpful when working on a bug to know under what conditions it fails and when it might possibly succeed. Guess I'll be able to do my own testing on this tommorrow, since I don't have the game yet (A plague of rabid wombats on the heads of all those at strategy first).

DirectX 8.2??? Damn, there is no SDK available for that version... Must talk to MS as I'm positive they have played with DX so something we use for playing the music ain't working the way it used to anymore. Sorry about that, we'll have this fixed in no time :)

Hmm from the MS Site:-

"DirectPlay 8.2

This download contains DirectX 8.1b plus some DirectPlay fixes related to performance and connectivity issues exhibited with some online multiplayer game titles. This release of DirectX is not recommended for general installation. You should only consider installing this release if you have an online gaming problem that has been identified as being fixed with DirectX 8.2. This version of DirectX can replace all previous released versions of DirectX."

Myself I only use another version of Directx if a game I purchase wants to install it.

Finally after 19 months and a breathtaking amount of something like 10 posts I am useful. Perhaps! Maybe those other folks who had the same problem didnt use directx 8.2?

So have anyone had the same problems but use dx 8.1?

Thanks in advance.

But of course.

1: Soundblaster Live Value

2: Direcx 8.1 (4.08.01.0810)

3: This one is harder since there´s no driver version available. Driver date is 2002-03-18. There´s a shitload of files under "driver detail" with a couple of different versions. The driver installations file is ver 1.0.0.1 and named LiveDrvPack.exe if it helps (dl from Creative).

Cheers...

Well I had "an online gaming problem". :) Directx is not something you play around with... kinda hard to uninstall as we all know :)

From the specs everyone is giving, it seems to be an DirectX/XP problem.... unless someone is using Win98/2K and hasn't revealed their OS.

Is this a correct assumption?

Superpowers??? Hardly..i friggin beta tested that game..those designers...ooo it was such a good idea..but..well..as anyone can see..it did not work..too bad too..plus that project was of a much grander scale then this..and crashed pretty hard, stability was the least of their problems. Anyway i'm sure everything will be patch perfected in a few months at the outside..it may not be the best thing in the world, but the gamming industry is evolving to the internets reality.

The latest drivers available on the www.soundblaster.com site for Soundblaster Live! Value are dated 2002-07-17. I don't know if it will work, but you might want to try to update to the latest, greatest drivers and try HOI's audio again to see if it helps.

I have exactly the same problem. Game crashes just after it says Initializing sound...

Windows XP Service Pack 1 and more than enough RAM and processor to run the game.

HEEELP!?

I don't know if this will have any bearing on it, but I've been told--both by an IT friend as well as Adelphia Customer Support, my internet provider--that the WindowsXP Service Pack 1 is an ABSOLUTE NO-NO to download, as it is bug riddled.

That´s actually the ones I installed. Although windooze says driver date 020318 and driver version not available.

Hmmmm... very interesting.... wonder how many people reporting the complaint at SP1 victims?

Same problem, music doesn't work. XP, SP1 etc..
And, I can't run higher than 800x600 (latest detonator drivers, although I used Rivatuner to fix the 60hz problem so I can play CS properly :p might have to do with something like that. BF1942 crashed initially if you ran higher than 60hz)

I gave a link (in the EU2 support forum) to a utility that *would* uninstall Directx. That was at a time when 8.1 came out and I do not know if it will work with 8.2.
Probably best to leave it as the next official full release will be 9.0 (do *not* download the beta yet!)
