Events giving one technology like the ones triggered by the "Steal technology" mission of the spymaster or the one from the chaplain don't seem to really do anything. I suspected it numerous times but was never sure about the numbers, now I started a new game as Abyssinia (every province starts with 0/0/0 technology) and got one of the technology events. Paid my 30g, but still 0/0/0 everywhere.

I think it actually gives you a 0.1 boost, not the 1.0 that the tooltip seems to imply. But I could be mistaken, as the implementation of the tech stealing is rather opaque in the event files (it uses "steal_random_tech = ROOT" to actually do the tech increase, and that might not be working correctly).

You are right, I paid closer attention the next time the event came up, it really seems to be ~0.1 instead of 1.

Dammit, can't change thread topic. "Tool tip for technological gain events is lying" sounds better.

I think the real issue is the terminology used for technology. I believe the game operates in 0.1 tech-level increments (you see this as bumps of 10% completion in the event log). However, those 0.1 level units are normally not referred to directly, except in the "steal_random_tech" tooltip. Probably that should be changed to say "tech advanced by 10%" rather than by 1.

Not when you consider the length of the game. Not every county will make out tech this way. Makes gameplay sense to me. Makes historical sense to me also.

You'd need 12.5 years on average for a 0.1 increase, and 125 years for 1 point of technology. That's not even 4 points in the entire length of the game for your capital only.

In those years, you could assassinate tons of people safely with the other assignments of the spymaster, which is infinetely more useful than stealing 4 random points of technology for your capital.

Historically, what are even the examples of people trying to "steal" technological developments?

Too right, I mistakenly read that 8% yearly as overall technology rate. The current stealing rate is really very slow and not worth it. I tend to just leave my spymaster to discover plots in my capital; defensively since I am not a very intrigue orientated player.
