The mod starts in 1914, and hence, every country with gendarmery would have some crowd dispersing agent. The countries that doesn´t have gendarmery would research a crowd dispersing agent in 1914.
Hence, tear gas should be included.

BTW, excavating skills sounds more like 'trained gravediggers' :D

Just a thing I've noticed while doing beta-testing of the vanilla version: You should really make sure that similar technologies have similar components. And that unsimilar technologies have different components. The best thing would be to define what groups of technologies you have and than assigning these groups tech components. Otherwise you'll have a horrible time making research teams which are good in what they are supposed to be good in and bad in everything else. As an example for what I mean: In the vanilla game, electronics and technical_efficiency often make or break a team-tech relation. Teams that have these two skills are automatically good at researching a wide variety of stuff in vanilla from ships to aircraft and tanks to radar. So, be mindful of how you assign the components. They are a gameplay mechanic, no more, no less.

I believe that in 1914, the most common crowd dispersing agent was called "a sabre charge". :)

As for tear gas, I believe there was exactly one case of it being used prior to WW1: in 1912, the French army (not the police) used tear gas during a siege when a gang of armed robbers had holed up in a house at Choisy-le-Roi. However, this was very much an odd experiment - tear gas was something research chemists wrote dissertations on, not something that was on general issue to police and troops.Perhaps some form of communications or mapreading technology?

For that matter, in HoI2 I believe that police brigades aren't a separate tech at all - you get them for free when you research a certain infantry tech...

I'm finally back ... been trying to get a handle on everything. Katrina was a mess and my apartment is 200 miles from the Gulf Coast and it still was messy here. :(

Anyway about the whole brigade issues. It is not hard to decrease the number of brigades and the like. I can add the Gendarmerie brigade to another tech, possibly adding it the 1914 Infantry Tech, etc. So I can work on that stuff and try and get an update soon.

Okay. I look forward to it. :)

However, as the brigade can be attached to 1890 infantry, then it has to be assumed that the brigade in question is suitable for the year in which the model of infantry originates. Which isn't quite the case. :)

I would be inclined to agree, as the brigade in some sense must be relebent to the model from which it is attached to.

Sigh... then what will you suggest?

"Finger on Map Technology" and "Field Telephone w. cable back to GHQ" perhaps?

Are you guys using some kind of systematic approach to assign the tech components? Otherwise you'll have a hellish time balancing the tech teams.

Well... no actually, but we´ll give it a try and see if it works or not. :)

Oh, I just came up with an idea, since we are already shifting component types around, how about changing it into something like this:

Rocketry - Gas warfare
Nuclear_engineering - Lighter Than Air
Nuclear_physics - Crackpot science
Combined_arms_focus - Newfangled ideas

Of course, newfangled ideas would be a doctrine component, only issued to a limited number of teams (such as von Hutier, for example).

There is also one component type that isn't used at all in vanilla HoI2: large_unit_focus

Those look fine to me. Are we still planning on doing a chemical plant to replace the rocket test site (in which case this works well). Depending on what we place the nuclear tech with can have an additional thing that can be placed on the map. Any suggestions as to what that should be?

Y'all can do whatever you want to the subtechs and requirements. Just tell me what you want and I will make the tech screen it only takes me about a week to do everything. If anyone wants the techs i already have done just tell me and I can email them to you.

I'll take the techs, thanks. dsw6000[a]hotmail.com

Good luck.

You'll need it.
