Chapter 1: The Dream of Liberty: Temur
Temur was standing proudly on a hill in front of his army's camp.
The sun had just set and as it headed west to Persia and Anatolia it left a warm orange nuance in the blue and cold night sky.
The stars appeared in front of the young khan. He watched every single one of them with devotion.
After what seemed to be forever he went back to his tent, not too far from were he had stood. He washed his hands and feet, took off his light scaled armor and stood in front of a small carpet. He bowed whispering some words in his tongue and then returned up. He then prostrated on the carpet and then sat on it. His eyes were closed. During his prayers he always seemed to be in another world, talking to Allah. Sometimes he used to stop praying and to start nodding as if Allah himself was talking to him and giving him orders.
His rebellion against the khagan of Chagatai was seen by all the people of Transoxiana as a mission given him from the Almighty.
Temur, or Timur, as the Persians call him, meaning Iron in the Chagatai tongue, was a devoted muslim, a cunning leader, a clever commander and a dangerous enemy for everybody who stood in his path. He always acted following, as he told me a lot of times, what Allah told him in his dreams.
The first dream he had was the "Dream of Liberty".
"The path of the Sword of Islam shall begin with liberty" he said to me. He also described me what he saw in his dream, but I can't actually recall all the details, as my memory loses track now... So many years have passed.
Liberty, that was the goal.
He rapidly gathered his followers and his army, 24.000 strong, in Samarkand and claimed indipendence for Transoxiana, proclaiming himself Khan and leader of a new khanate, the Timurid Empire, bringing war to Chagatai.
