I'm not sure that any family can be said to control it during the CK time frame. I don't think the various independent Prussian tribes were necessarily under heriditary rule (or if they were we don't know about it), and other bits were controlled by the Teutonic Order, again not playable.
He became duke of swabia in 1147 at 25, and suceeded conrad III as King of Germany in 1152, he got the crown of Lombard and consolidated germany. in 1152 he was made emperor then got into some ugliness in northern Italy that got him excommunicated defeated by the Lombard League 1176.
He later went on to have some fights with Henry the Lion duke of Saxony and Bavaria and eventually left his throne for the 3rd crusade, where he drowned in 1190. So there is the brief history, he is around during the CK period but his birth falls after the start date which means he wont necessarily be in the game via name or substance.

My inital post didnt account for the scenarios, so you bet he should be in the 1187 scenario, prepping for the 3rd crusade.

Cant wait to diaper him up, plop him in a wheelchair, and push him across the Alps to "invade" Lombardy.
Could a dynasty somehow subvert an order and thereby take control of it? through marriage etc? or were ALL orders difficult in this way regarding marriage and so on?
I think it happened during CK time and I think it was a French King that dissolved an order (tampliers, IIRC) and seized all their lands.
Yes Phillip the Fair did it on Friday 13th, october 1307. (Not sure if thats where the superstition of that day comes from though). He leveled 9 accusations at them and with the backing of the Pope had most of them tortured into confession. The order was smashed and thier wealth (one of the largest in Europe) and thier lands confisgated.
Could be an event in the game, nice windfall for the french player anyway.
Jacques de Molay was burned on 14th March, 1314 and he cursed Philip IV, who died a cuple of months later..., so he was quite unfortunate. [see in Accursed Kings - Les Rois Maudits by Maurice Druon]
