I know this would probably fit the Blender forums better, but since I'm making a building for Cities: Skylines I still think this thread fits here.

So, I made a building with google sketchup and exported to blender as an .obj.

Now I have some textures I'd like to place, but all the blender texturing tutorials do stuff with UV maps, and I'm more used to the more common "Place textures per face"-method, where you just select a face of a block, and which texture to apply on it.

Now can anyone tell me if there's a way to do that in blender, or maybe another 3d modelling program which allows to do that? The UV mapping looks terribly hard to do for this kind of building

I'm not really sure the "method" you're speaking of but from the past 2 months of constant research (new modeler as well to Blender) the only way you can really start applying textures effeciently is to learn UV Mapping.

Basically - you are taking all the faces of your model, and unwrapping them to UV squares so you can then apply textures to them after exporting that UV layout in picture format to Gimp or Photoshop.

You can create materials for each face and assign that face to that material and then create a texture for each face (can be separate texture images etc) but there are limitations in this method.

Best thing to do is learn UV Wrapping. It took me fuckin' 3 weeks to learn but I'm getting the hang of it now - I can tell you which features you'll need to use most that tutorials NEVER SEEMED to touch on. WHy in the EFF would you do a tutorial and not talk at all about how to SNAP?????!!! WTF. That piece alone took me 4 or 5 days to discover and figure out how critical it can be to quickly mapping UV's.

EDIT:
Here is a bad example at a model I was working on and the UV mapy I made. I ended up scratching this model for various reasons but you can export this layout to photoshop so you can easily apply colors and textures on it - then reload it back into Blender to see your results.
